Multi vitamins are very popular in the fitness world and among those looking to stay safe and healthy. Therefore one of the most common things to do is to go out and buy a multivitamin possibly containing trace minerals and other "health promoting" compounds". These vitamins range from a few bucks to over 50 for specialty vitamins and almost everyone's taking one now a days. Well I'm here to say they are useless and a waste of money. You might be apprehensive to hear this at first but please read the whole thread and then make your judgement.
Lets start with what you are actually getting in a multivitamin. A multi comes in many forms, the most common is this a tablet.
Many people just read the label and think this is what I am getting in this pill or powder or liquid multi, Yet this is not true! Why is that?
Vitamins and minerals cannot stand exposure to certain conditions as well as other substances. These conditions and substances are usually required or a side effect of creating the multi vitamin or part of their shipping and handling. How exactly does this work? Well heres a list of what destroys each vitamin.
I will preface this by saying, the tablet form almost always uses heat in the process of creating the pill after it is caked into the tablet shape.
Vitamin A: partially destroyed by light and air (Some lost), Destroyed by heat
B1: high temperature
B2: light
B6: heat and some contraceptive medicines
B12: sunlight
C: over exposure to air, heat, light
D: Varying mineral oils
E: heat, oxygen, iron
Folic acid: sunlight, heat
K: Difficult to absorb in presence of E, Calcium, mineral oils
Almost every multi vitamin product has exposure to at least one of these, so why do you keep buying them? At the very least these powdered vitamins are exposed to light and heat when in tablet form, even for powdered multi's they are exposed to light. Some of you are going to say you don't care and keep wasting your money on a multi, which is fine you are being ignorant and I cannot help you since you have an incorrect notion drilled into your head.
But for those who are open minded and want to learn new information you may be asking yourself, how do I get these vitamins through my diet then? Its much easier then you think and I bet that you are already getting a large portion of them in your diet. Heres some easy sources of vitamins that you probably already eat
Raw spinach 2 cups has 100% of your vitamin A, almost 400% of your vitamin K, and 30% of your folate.
1 oz of Almonds has 37% of your vitamin E and 17 % of riboflavin
Brown rice cooked still has 15% of most B vitamins
1 oz of salmon has 33% of your vitamin D
Most citrus fruits have anywhere from 50-100% of your vitamin C
Now you might be saying that you still cook a lot of your food and that is okay. You will destroy some of the vitamins, but not all of them. This is because the vitamins are not just laying out in the open in a powder or pill. They are stored in the food you are eating whether it is vegetable, grain, meat product, fruit etc and are protected by animal/plant make up.
There are several other reasons why I advise not taking a multi, I will continue to update. Any questions or comments please ask
