It's a tear in the abdominal wall and because the tear a bulge comes out, thats your guts underneath your skin and fat. 1/3 people get them in their lifetime they are very common and can happen even when lifting up something light, like a hairbrush or something. SO thats why being careful in the gym is very important.
The hernia can burst inside you which would lead to internal bleeding and fecal matter going into your blood, or you can strangulate the guts in your muscles and cause some serious **** to happen. Surgery for it takes no more than 20 minutes or so and you can begin again within a few weeks.

I currently have a hernia. I am waiting on surgury ( I live in Canada so it may be a few weeks before I get evaluated by a surgeon - health care sucks up here, but its free so whatever ). Believe it or not, I got my hernia from coughing. I was really sick in the winter and had a nasty cough for around 2-3 weeks. Lots of pressure on my lower abdominal area caused the hernia. When I coughed I felt the hernia bulging. I guess its good that I got it from coughing and not from working out. Makes me feel better about lifting after i have my surgury and recover.
