serious question? do you just chuck your leather lifting gloves when they get smelly from sweat? Mine are disgusting, but if I wash them the leather will be ruined.......

I think there's 2 options here:
1. At my gym, I can use the hair dryer and blow it dry a bit before packing it away (it's the "wet" sweat that is left on the gloves that make it stinky) or throw it in the sun for a few hours.
2. Throw it in the washing machine (do not mix with clothes!!) and it will be fine - mine are leather also. I say do not mix with clothes as the colour may run and spoilt your other clothes.

Washing it is fine - even if it does expedite the wear and tear - still beter than tossing a good pair away every few weeks. =)

Are you sure they aren't washable leather? That's all I buy and I have to throw them into the washer every week because they stink! Of course, I can't say for sure that hasn't decreased their life, but I get 6 months to a year out of them.

Yep, I occasionally throw my gloves and vera grips in the wash. Air dry. They feel a bit smallish when I put them on after washing, but they stretch back out.

If you don't want to go that route, try fabreeze.

Try putting them in the freezer over night. its just like with sneakers. the cold will kill the bacteria that are causing the smell.

Of course you know that lifting gloves actually make it harder to grip the bar.

I throw mine in the washer, just don't put them in the dryer as the heat is usually not good.

It's the bacteria. Put a diluted isopropyl alcohol solution in a spray bottle and spritz them down then allow to air dry. Then I'd put them in the washer. I do this with my son's hockey equipment.

My wife plays roller derby, they put their pads out in the sun and the UV kills the bacteria. It works well.

I rock climb, so I don't have soft supple skin in the first place. The problem is that I build up so much callous that it starts peeling off in great chunks. Kinda gross. There are other reasons that I won't mention on a public forum.

I don't use lifting gloves. I've never seen any of my strongman training buddies use them either. Why not just go without the glove? It seems like they'd inhibit the natural grip/forearm development you get lifting barbells without them.

I don't wear gloves and never have, but my GF does.

In fact I buy them for her.

I think it's great she works out and lifts weights, but I'm also glad she still has soft hands.

my older boxing gloves smell terrible after a years use (sweat and bacteria accumulations), spraying anti bacterial spray in there does the trick for me.

i use this spray called Glen20, not sure if its also american product.


EDIT: after reading other posts, washing machine is a good idea lol i wouldnt put my boxing gloves there though
