Sure they're pre-pubescent, but the part that caught me was:
"the team tested lavender and tea tree oil on human breast cells in the laboratory. They report in the New England Journal of Medicine that the oils stimulated breast cells to produce oestrogen and inhibit male sex hormones. "
I know many popular men's shampoos and body products contain TTO, just thought it would be of interest to some here. If someone has the time to find the full abstract and post it that would be cool. Thoughts?
Breast growth in boys blamed on cosmetics
James Randerson, science correspondent
Thursday February 1, 2007
The Guardian
Cosmetics containing lavender and tea tree oil can disrupt the hormonal development of pre-pubescent boys causing them to grow breasts, doctors say in a warning that follows three American boys experiencing the rare condition after they used gels, shampoos or lotions containing the essential oils.
The researchers say they do not yet know which chemicals in the oils caused the changes. Once identified these substances might need to be removed from products designed for children.
Article continues
"If you use these products on your child and you see changes in their body talk to your doctor or paediatrician," said Kenneth Korach, at the US National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, in Maryland.
Although six in 10 boys experience some temporary breast enlargement during puberty, it is very rare for pre-pubescent boys to begin developing breasts, a condition called gynecomastia. Scientists know this is caused by a disruption of sex hormone signals to breast tissue, but it can have a variety of causes.
The researchers began to suspect lavender and tea tree oil after Clifford Bloch, a paediatrician at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, examined the cases of three boys, aged four, seven and 10. "We speculated that environmental factors might be contributing to their condition," he said. The link was that the parents had given the children products containing the essential oils, including a skin balm with lavender oil, a gel and shampoo with lavender and tea tree oil, lavender soap and lavender-scented skin lotion.
To see if the oils were the culprits, the team tested lavender and tea tree oil on human breast cells in the laboratory. They report in the New England Journal of Medicine that the oils stimulated breast cells to produce oestrogen and inhibit male sex hormones. The breasts of all three boys returned to normal a few months after they stopped using the cosmetics.
"We want to encourage doctors who may be seeing patients with gynecomastia to ask [them] about the products they are using," said Dr Korach

I heared about this but didn't realize it was 'Tea Tree'. It's really nice stuff, reminds me of mint chocolate when I wash my hair with it (at least the stuff my wife buys).
Fortunately I haven't used much (although I'm not in puberty but I have some gyno anyway, so I'm sure it's not helping that!), mostly my wife uses it, but I don't think I'll be washing my or any of my sons hair with it.
And be careful with other products too by the sounds of it.

I used the Paul Mitchell for years before I started shaving my head.
This is unbelievable, considering I was 15-17 through that time and just chalked up my minor gyno(or extra chest fat) to puberty. - Not saying its not, but geez.
Good thing I just soap the ol' head now. Hopefully soaps wont be the next great evilGoals by 1 April 07: Weigh 170 pounds, DB Bench the 60's by 10, Squat 200x10

Are they both still prepubescent?
Interesting study. I wonder if Paul Mitchell & Co., will try to tout this as a preventive shampoo against MPB? I also wonder how this would effect a woman with E2 dependant breast CA? Gotto watch out for those environmental estrogens. How come there are no environmental androgen? Seems a little discriminatory to me.

Well I guess I'm buying my girlfriend 15 bottles of body wash with lavender and tea tree oil.
I wonder if you'll actually see some company pimping this to women to enhane their breast size.Yes, there is indeed a deeper component to it all.

Update: Discontinued use immediately upon reading the full study, and started back on Nizoral (daily). I can't pin down the improvement to THIS SINGLE variable, but:
1) I'm DEFINATELY less puffy
2) Increased facial hair growth (FAST NOW)
3) Also, if you look in my bodyspace... my progress photo @ 190 was when I was first using Nizoral.... the photo @ 243lbs (puffy) was after I switched from using Nizoral (because I started buzzing my head) and started using Tea Tree daily (because my roommate got it cheap and it feels cool on the head). Could be a koinkydink... who knows... but I know that I'm happy that this thread was posted.Free agent

Holy ****
I've been using dandruff shampoo since puberty... the second inactive ingredient after water is "tea-lauryl sulfate" is this a derivative of tea tree oil? Do I need to stop using this?
I also used to use tea tree oil on my face for acne. Now I use lavender vinegar at night in spots, not alot though, but it does help with acne.
I've always carried more fat in my chest but my doctor told me it wasn't gyno, he laughed at me when I even suggested it.
That freaks me out though, good find.http://bodyspace.bodybuilding.com/Boxer757/

Heard about this on a morning talk show, actually.
They were selling something, and I think It was Lavender, and the woman on the show said, something on the lines of not letting your son use it, because he might grow boobs, Then the male presenter was shocked, he was like "Im gonna have to check what I use" then everyone laughed at him and his boobs.

This I have noticed for sure as well, which is very annoying because shaving sucks.
Also I have been watching most of the labels around my bathroom pretty closely since I first saw this, I've found a few other things I use occasionally that have TTO in them. Lotions, aftershaves... check your bottles boys. Better safe than sorry in this case.-Non-Rep Coalition Member "Bias Free Since 2003"
