Normal curls will build more mass where as hammer curls focus more on the bicep peak.

You should do both to achive best results.

Curls hit the biceps brachii the hardest.
Hammers hit the brachialis and brachioradialus the hardest.

Both are great with a different emphasis though both hit all the named muscles to various degrees. Brachialis is the muscle in-between your bicep and tricep. Brachioradialus is the (hopefully) thick muscle across the top of your forearms.

This is the only factually correct response, with the correction that the Brachialis (muscle between bicep and inner elbow) is hit best by preacher curls.

    in general

Hammers: focus on the outer (long) head and forearms

    Normal: more overall (both heads)

That being said, individuals may get different results.

While hammer curls aren't necessary for bicep growth as one person mentioned they are important for overall arm development.
While curls are the staple of exercises for the front of the arm, there are other exercises that help fill in areas this area also, hammer curls being one of the best.
You could compare curls to bench press for the cherst.....The staple but not the be all end all of chest exercises

From my workout experiences, the hammers will not hit my Biceps as well as the straight bar. It used to hurt my left wrist (after I broke it) to do the straight bar too, but now it doesn't. I think you should use the barbell for maximum bicep growth (palms up of course, or the E-Z Curl Bar). Maybe ease into it with the E-Z bar. You want the palms up though.

Just do both, they will both hit bicep muscles and hammer will get some of your forearm too. When it comes to bicep growth curls are pretty much curls and genetics is the biggest factor in how your bicep muscles form

Normal curls work mainly the biceps. Hammer curls take curls a bit further by stimulating the brachioradialis, the biggest muscle in the forearm. It also works on the brachialis intensely as well. Make hammer curls a regular in your routine and watch your forearms take on a more drastic appearance.
