I want to get more into powerlifing. Sure, I want to have alot of muscle, but I want power, endurance and strength as well. Where should I start? Reps? Sets? to accomodate both goals?

    Form.

PL'ing may not be a good choice for you since you have what seem to be some pretty significant pre-existing shoulder injuries. I would talk with your therapist or ortho before starting any serious bench training to make sure you don't suffer more damage.

I always love looking for videos of great lifts, and there is no one better than Laura Phelps. Check out her new record (for new powerlifters, pay attention to her form , it's perfect)

Thank you! It went well -- I want to do more. PR'd on deadlifts, weak on bench (not used to pause benching at all!), so definitely lots of room for improvement, but so much fun!

Thanks! She is a great inspiration/ motivation of mine.

And a shout out to all other PLers/ strongwomen. I'm not competing- but train in this style. I find it more entertaining and rewarding.

My current goal is to lift the smallest stone at my gym...157lbs!

that is a beautiful thing. seriously a work of art. the shirt looks a little low on her arm, so I'm not sure it would be allowed in all federations, but with that lock out at 510 I'm betting she gets the 535 at the next meet. LOVE IT!!!

Thanks Yeah, I was going to wait until I was much better before starting heavy. I wonder if these chronic injuries now will affect the prospect of PL'ing in the future?

    Very cool!

I'm intrigued by powerlifting, though I don't know much about it. After hearing about Wendler's 5/3/1 from my ex and seeing that some ladies on another online haunt were also doing it, I decided to give the program a try. I just finished my first wave/cycle this week, and I know I'm a weak wuss compared to a lot of you, but I'm confident that the program will help me get stronger. I'm enjoying the journey!

Does anyone have a book or website recommendation for learning more about female powerlifting? Just curious about it..

Good idea...here's a list of website I've visited, please feel free to add others.

    BB.COM Powerlifting Forum
    http://forum.bodybuilding.com/forumdisplay.php?f=33

    Westside Barbell
    http://www.westside-barbell.com/

    North America Strongman
    http://www.nastrongmaninc.com/

    USA Powerlifting
    http://www.usapowerlifting.com/

Edited to add: None of these really address "female powerlifting" - training method is the same for male/female. There is access to female powerlifters stats on the USA Powerlifting site though.

Do you like the 5/3/1 program? I've heard of it also...but never thought seriously about trying it. I heard the calculations could take awhile.

I'm with you Sophie. I've found I really, really like getting stronger (much more than I was, but not compared to other people who want to be strong). Since I'm at a good weight and bodyfat, focusing on getting stronger is what keeps me going.

Doing a 5/3/1 version right now -- second month. I'll let you guys know if it helps my poor pitiful bench. Never could do 5x5 at 85 (last tried that 4 months ago), and could only get one or 2 at 90.

P.S. It was fun doing 12 deadlifts at 160 pounds. DOH grip with just chalk, no straps, elbow tendons felt great at the time and still feel good today. Yippee!!

I keep thinking of entering a gym push-pull competition (assuming no conflict with kids' soccer schedules ). You guys can encourage me!

    Cheers for the strong ladies!

What's a push-pull competition? That sounds like fun - you should definetly do it!
Nice job on the DL! Sounds like you are ready to increase the weight. My DL day is tomorrow - can't wait - it's my favorite lift.

Yesterday I trained at my powerlifting gym and tried to lift THE STONE. -got it into my lap! I think it's technique holding me back - need to work on using my legs, not my arms to get it up. I'll try again in a couple weeks - working on rows in the meantime.

Next weekend is a strongman competition that some guys from my gym are competiting in. The Ronnie Coleman classic: http://www.nastrongmaninc.com/upcomi...UpcomingID=443

I REALLY want to go watch - hopefully my work schedule will be accomodating.

The canadian contest posted above looks awesome! I wish there were something like that close to me, or maybe I will have to think of a way to get there...

    Strong lifting this week!

A traditional powerlifting competition involves three lifts = squat, bench, and deadlift

A push/pull competition involves two lifts = bench and deadlift

This is the gym I go to on Saturdays and occaisionally one day during the week. It's in league city, so I can't get down there for every workout. My normal gym is the the 24hr on Richmond. I've been going in the early AM lately.

You should come train at the gym one saturday! I'm usually the only female, but the guys are great - it's a ton of fun.

Edit: Bianca - thanks for the link on the 5/3/1.

Here is a link to the strongman federation page. If you check out the future contests, it will let you know what is in your area. Even if you don't plan on competing soon, you can still get some contact info for the promoters and ask if there are any training crews near you.

SWEET!!! Do they ever do stuff in Manitoba? My hometown is Winnipeg and i am ALWAYS looking for stuff to do there since i have a place to stay and people to come watch me if i decide to compete

If not, it gives me an excuse to go to BC!!!

Stumptuous.com is probably one of the best all around websites for women's lifting. A lot of her stuff is geared towards PLing and Olympic lifting (which i want to get into more so then powerlifting actually). Krista is the reason i am here right now!!!

punxnotdead309: I know it sucks having chronic injuries. I had a lower back injury last year and a rhomboid injury early in Jan. I never thought i would get back into lifting after the last injury (no idea how in injured it, but we think i had a few ribs out of place as well and a pitched nerve...it was horrible). I found myself a good massage therapist that helped me as TON and i waited until I was totally healed before i ventured back into the gym. It does take time, but it is worth it. I am now squatting and benching more then i have before and am working my deadlift back up to where i want it to be. You are still quite young and have all the time to let yourself heal and get stronger!

With regards to the stones, those are the trickiest. They require excellent form once you get the ball up into your lap. You have to round your back in a certain way to actually get it up and it takes so much practice. I have watched guys at my gym who can lift anything have problems with those stones . My BF busted his knee after 12 years of injury free training in the stone competition. We have the competition on video and we will do a slow mo at the exact point where his knee starts to bend in...it is funny watching his pain in slow motion .

Holy wow! That's pretty close to me! I live in South Houston/Friendswood area. I didn't even know that was down here.

Since you come down this way sometimes, we should totally meet up one weekend!
