I for one, don't.

I don't need studies for that one. It's pretty much common sense. You see, the body likes to digest food and take it's time doing it. The difference between drinking 2 scoops of whey and eating 8oz lean steak is that the whey will run right through you and set off your nitrogen balance. The body will take it's time to digest the beef and keep aminos elevated in blood for 3-4 hours. You'll benefit so much more from eating a steak than drinking a shake. Even the top guys (don't have to look further than Jay or Ronnie) use whole foods even post workout, and they could get all the whey they wanted from the sponsors. Other thing your missing out with shakes is dietary thermogenesis, especially important when dieting.

I havent used protein powder since 1/1/09.
I ran into a doctor on a ski lift back in December, i forgot what kind of PHd he had, but he was VERY VERY knowledgable about diet/nutrition , we had a good long conversation about dieting and what not.
He emphasized emphatically to me that whey protein shakes are complete bunk. Apparently, the bioavailability of whey is extremely minimal, we only utilize 5-10% of the contents. And the fact that supplement companies want you to believe that it is so vital to take right after working out because it is 'fast digesting' is even more of blatant lie. The only reason its so 'fast digesting', if at all, is because it goes in and comes right back out with MINIMAL usage by our digestive system. So wtf..90%+ just goes right thru us. What I tend to equate that to is MONEY. I personally do not want to WASTE my money on a product that does nothing.
So, based on this conversation with him, I decided after 1/1/09, I would stop taking it. I eat a solid meal now after I work out and never take MRP's. My gains are still progressing.Last edited by Lexodus; 03-13-2009 at 01:59 PM. Reason: clarification

That could be true. Depends on the situation and who you are.
It makes a lot more sense to have a shake before the gym than a full meal in my opinion. Its also better in my opinion to have a shake immediately after training to get recovery going then a meal an hour later. Also if there is no food handy a shake is the best thing.
