    A couple easy questions

    1) Do barbell curls and EZ-CurlBar curls have the same effect in building size? If not, does the palm facing play that big a role in size? ILuvLifting2001 said something along the lines of Hammer Curls building a peak. Palms perpendicular in Hammers, palms toward the sky in barbell curls, and half-way with the EZ-CurlBar.

    2) There's a lot of variation when using the fat caliper. Measuring just a half-inch away yields different numbers. So what is the trick to getting an accurate measure? Or, do you just move it around the general area until the smallest or largest reading is found and then do it that way from now on.

    Hi Eye,

I don't have alot of time to answer but I wanted to throw these links up for you. I'll come back on later and help answer your curls questions in depth but the short answer is yes, hand postion plays a big role in arm development.

Check these links for How tos on the calipers

    Hi Eye2, how goes it?

Curls - I normally do about 6-10 sets of curls per workout. There are so many variations of curls, that I just choose 2 or at most 3 different exercises to do for each workout. And I change them every workout. Hammers, Flat Bar, V-bar cable one day. The next time it might be seated db, close grip EZ, flat cable. Then wide grip EZ Preacher, standing alternating db. You get the picture. The variations all hit your biceps just differently enough to cause growth for the entire bicep, IMO.

Calipers - I should be receiving mine in a few days. Maybe we can both learn how to use them at the same time.

    Thanks Phatman1179.

Hey MagicMel. All OK here. How about with you?

Be careful first time out with the calipers. Got a bruise the size of quarter right on top of the bicep. What was interesting is that both my wife and I had the same body fat percentage. Right down to the decimal point. She was really hacked off. She walks 4 miles a day and does the stairmaster for 40 minutes everyday. She doesn't look at all like me. So, she started measuring herself with the device. That's how we know just moving around slightly (can) gives drastically different readings. She ending up moving down to less than half of the original tally just by slight shifts.

Oh, got permission and made space to get the power-cage. The fitness expert (salesman) said it's for Olympic style barbells only. So, an olympic set had to be purchased. Got that Wednesday night. March 5 is payday and the power-cage will be ordered. The Power-Tec will be chosen over the Yukon for a couple reasons. Mainly it's stronger and takes up less space. On the downside, it's not as expandable as the Yukon. Oh well, just about everything in life is a compromise. Right?

I'm not speaking to this scientifically, but from what I've read and from what my trainer told me, varying grips, etc. will work the muscle from different angles and "it's all good". I try to vary my exercises & grips so I don't get stuck in a rut or hit a plateau.

Not sure about the calipers. I'm equally frustrated with the inconsistency in all methods of measuring body fat.

Hey Eye2, you do know that women's bodyfat #s are higher than that of men? A woman at 18% will appear leaner than a man at 18%.

    Here's how they break down:

    *General Body Fat Percentage Categories

    Women (% fat) / Men (% fat)

    Essential Fat 10-12% / 2-4%
    Athletes 14-20% / 6-13%
    Fitness 21-24% / 14-17%
    Acceptable 25-31% / 18-25%
    Obese 32% plus / 25% plus

    *American Council on Exercise

Just thought I'd throw that in for your wife's benefit!

    Eye2 -

    I doin' great.

A new power-cage AND and a new olympic set? I am way too jealous now. Way to go! I think we are looking at x+100 in the bench press real shortly!

Hey wish me luck on Sunday. It will be the first time I'll be playing golf since going to the heavy weights, bulking routine. I hope I don't look like a mini Charles Barkley swinging the club. God what an ugly swing! I hope he doesn't read this forum.

I still haven't golfed since the alligator came out of the water & I accidently pounded my driver into the ground & got the softball size bruise on my elbow. At least the alligator didn't attack.

Well, Belle, when I first started working out about 7 years ago, I was in the "acceptable" group & only weighed 114lbs! I had 28% bodyfat. After doing a 12 week program at my gym it had dropped to 18% and I was an "athlete." Just keep working on it -- it will happen!

    Yeah, belle, keep at it.

I too was obese at 38%bf. Obese. Morbidly Obese was the proper term

I', not 21%bf with the bia test machine, acceptable (just)

    and 15-16% with calipers.

I think I'm more inbetween the two measurements.

Belle, you ARE doing pretty well. In fact you are doing FANTASTICALLY well. You were 185lbs and now you are 144 if I remember from your challenge thread. The 130's are just around the corner. You have an excellent game plan for reaching your goals too. Just hold your head up high and keep looking forward. Picture how you want to be and just go for it without ever looking back. You have our full support here.

    Cool

Hey Magic Mel, good luck on the links tomorrow. You may well find, as I did to my surprise, that you have straightened out your tee shots a lot and hence added another 20 to 30 yards to them. I simply had to begin playing a little slower, not racing my shots and because I was in better condition I could make my turn with my shoulder and hips better. Your clubs should also feel lighter to you so take your time with your backswing and get that good extrension....then let it rip! I think your in for a pleasant surprise.

On a personal side, I hit the pool today (as the temps returned to around 80 for the first time this winter) and got lots of gratification and positive comments. Now I'm psyched to train even harder. Hmmmnn maybe I can add another 20 yards to my drives this year as well....hmmmnn!!!

    Thanks

Yes I have lost 40 lbs since end of October 2002... I wish I had taken before pics actually of me before I signed at the gym. It may have helped me at this stage now to look back on them and remind myself!

I don't take the gauge above serious anyway because I know I have more muscle and that my weight is no indicator now of what my body consists of where muscle and fat is concerned.

I don't even want to get down in weight as long as I get in size 8-9 pants here as I used to be. I don't mind what the scale says. I know that the fat percentage is going down because when I grab or pinch certain areas of my body I have been able to literally guestimate how many lbs there are. I did this by grabbing the quantity of a pack of butter. It is really good to do that this morning and find that there is only the equivalent to one pound of butter that I can actually grab and not three! I know one pound sounds a lot still to some, but to me at the rate I am losing weight the past two weeks, it means I should have one flat tummy in the next four weeks for sure. Then it will just be a battle with me and my thighs which carry still about 2 1/2 fat each thigh. It was three the other week though...so I guess that is something!

I just need a kick when I start getting despondant so I think I am in the right place here with your guys...

Belle, you keep going gal. Everybody here is in your corner rooting for you. Your progress is way to good to let yourself get despondent. You know what you're doing. You know you're making steady progress. You know it's just a matter of time. Firm up the body and while your at it firm up that smile too!!!

Good source for facial weights? :)

    Hi Dutchman,

I think I DO need to work on those facial muscles around the mouth a little actually don't I? Anyone have any sources for weights that I can attach to my rizorius muscle and buccinator muscle when smiling? LOL!

You guys were so right. I really didn't know how far I was hitting my drives until the 18th hole. 470 yds par 5. I use a 12deg fairway driver as my driver and I can usually hit it 230-240. Well after that 18th drive I had 215 yds to the center of the green. Oh and BTW, it was center cut fairway. That's a 255 yd drive!!!
Took a 7 wood and landed 5ft short. Chipped to within 8 ft, then @*%%@#(#% THREE PUTTED. AAAARRGGHHHHH
I guess weight training doesn't do much for putting, does it.

If you'd like to see where I played, check out
    www.lostcanyons.com
    It was the Shadow Course.

Beautiful day, shot a 93, and I didn't need to deal with the poison oak or rattlesnakes either.
Not bad for not playing in 6 months.

    93! Not bad!

Glad to hear you gained distance from the lifting. That's what the guys on the golf channel were saying. Gotta do it to keep up with the new generation of players (who are more athletes than mere golfers).

Going to check out the place you play.

Here's where we play most of the time:
    http://www.prairielakesgolf.com/home.html

It's about 5 minutes away and cheap. Plus three 9 hole courses. You never know which two you are going to get.

Get off the silver tees! You're driving far enough for the gold and there's no water.

Oh man... look at the price at your course. The cheapest is $75. Does that include cart? At Prairie Lakes it's $28 with cart on the weekdays and $32 with cart on the weekends. Hmmmm.... but you usually end up spending just as much in lost balls.

My brother, who treated me, can only drive the ball 180 or so. He picked the silver tees.
This is a Pete Dye designed course. LOTS of deep pot bunkers, narrow fairways, triple tiered multi undulating greens. All set in a mountain type course (lots of elevation changes). Don't need water! On a few holes, you actually hit over brush/bush type terrain, either hill or valley, which is more hazardous than water, when you consider the possibility of searching for your balls in poison oak or coming face to face with a rattler. Fortunately, I only had to do this once for my own ball. But my brother was not as lucky, since he couldn't carry the yardage on a few holes.

    I only lost 1 ball.

My bro paid the premium $130 for each of use. Yes it does include cart... It Better.

An expensive course like this is something he treats me to just once a year for my birthday. For me, it is not the norm. When I played regularly, it is usually at a public, in the city, type course that costs around $40 or so with cart. I usually walk, though, so I end up paying around $25.
A 2 or 3 years ago we played at Pelican Hill for my birthday, check it out:
    www.pelicanhill.com
Back then it cost about $185 per round. Ouch!

Your brother is pretty nice for taking you out to play at such a nice course. Good thing there's more reasonable course for you to play on regularly.

In DFW there's about 100 courses. Nothing to do entertainment-wise except play golf. There's a couple that are $100+

A friend retired to Tyler last year. He lives in golf community and it's $300 a year to play. That's it. Everyday except Tuesday when they do heavy maintenance on the course everybody plays. You can either play at 9am or 2pm. You all gather up at the clubhouse and the marshall draws name to see who goes with who on that day. That's the life. Oh yeah... he built a new house for $60k out there in the gated community.

My brother played Kiawah when he was at a medical convention a few years back (he's a pediatrician). He said it was gorgeous! It is designed by Tom Fazio who also was the course designer for Pelican Hill which was the second site that I posted. Pelican Hill has the most breathtaking ocean scenery of any golf course that I have ever played golf at. But then again, I really haven't played a whole lot of breathtaking courses.

As far as alligators go, maybe we can pit my rattlesnakes against them and see which one takes the first mulligan!
