    Beer drinking

Ok I love my beer, I don't drink any on the days I lift. But on my days off I like to have 3 to 5 after work, will that pose a problem? I have a slight beer gut going on and people say that if I work my abs it will only make my belly bigger since I will be building muscle underneath the fat and it will make my belly protrude even further?? I can't stand cardio workouts but It looks as though I will have to add that to my routine in training... Should I just quit altogether or try and limit to 1 or 2 instead of the 3,4,5 after work that I am used to. I drink light beer..

it sucks, i love beer too. Those will add up though.

i am on a serious cut right now and have pretty much quit drinking.

If there isa special occasion, or a party or something, I will drink. I try to drink red wine or something now actually (i know, sounds dumb) IF I drink.

You HAVE to do cardio if you want to lose the weight too.

Cut out the drinking until you've lost the weight.

How do you expect your body to work on burning fat if its constantly working to rid itself of alcohol?

So how about the wines?? I know alcohol is not good for you but will wine be a better alternative to the beer if I were to drink. I do enjoy wine.. and a glass or two after work will suit me fine also

Bro... Wine.. beer. .and liquor are about the same...

I drank a lot... I mean a WHole.. like you I didn't drink on days I lift... but I got tore up on days I didn't..

I have cut all booze out totally for the next six months.. I am on week 5 now, and have made more gains in the last month than I did in the 4 previous "cutting" months.. To me its just not worth it... Cut the booze out and the definition will come..

Oh the bad news is you will still have to bust your ass in cardio.. but at least it will be effective.

I would cut out all booze, but from what I've read wine is the best alternative. Just don't drink too much.

Yup, hate it say it dude, but alcohol and weight lifting do not mix well. The drinking is counter productive to gaining muscle and losing fat.

i was in the same boat man i am 5'11 used to weigh 175 with a 6 pack and all now i am about 210 and i havent worked out in about a year....i look plain fat.

i am in college so the partying is very hard to avoid. i used to drink about 12 beers a night about 4 nights a week probably considered an alcholic.

in the past 3 weeks i ahve gone through a lifestyle change i quit drinking beer all together when i do drink i limit myself to 1 night a week and i drink like 2 screwdrivers or something like that. I know its not good for you but i figure 6 shots of vodka is alot better than 12 beers . and like i said I limit myself to 1 night a week.

just my input cause i know how the drinking is especially during football season good luck with everything.
Goal to be around 185 lbs

    12/05/08....207lbs

I appreciate the support. I love my beer buzz and the taste of my beer.

Oh well I have started a new hobby and probably a much better life by dedicating myself to lifting and being in shape. I will more than likely keep any drinking to special occasions and to the weekends only. And maybe I will just stop alltogether.

Beer is just soo damn good!! along with Johnny Walker red and black. Boy will I miss him!

    Thanks

Beer is one of the best ways to get fat if you ask me. It's really easy to tank in a crap load and you just keep on adding useless calories. I have a pretty active lifestyle and am an ectomorph, but if I have a few beers each day, that will pretty efficiently augment my BF%.

So I'm just gonna go and quote myself here:

“Life isn't always fun, you gotta sacrifice some **** to get results. In the end the short term loss will be worth the long term gain, because you'll actually have done something with your life, other then just satisfy your simple cravings for cheap low quality food / beverages.

Actually the vodka would be worse. It's a much higher alcohol content than beer which equates to more work for your body to remove the toxins.

I suppose you could go with a low carb light beer if you can get past the taste.

    Quit drinking.

Alcohol is a toxin which causes unnecessary strain on your internal organs, there by weakening their efficency...
If you can, I'd say quit.....but do not continue as you're doingg.....not only bad for your weight/physique, but your overall health as well.

nobody can tell you how to live your life big guy. Thats on you.

however, I don't know what "will that be a problem" means. Will it hinder your progress? Abso****inglutely. Will it you ruin you and turn you into a 300 pound slob, if controlled? Of course not. It's all about your goals as a bodybuilder. How serious are you? Is this a lifestyle change you are making, or are you just trying to get better pussy with a better body?

Nothing wrong with either option, just recognize who you are and what you wanna do and go from their.

Yes, that much alcohol will screw with your testosterone levels and make it really hard to lose fat/gain muscle. It is basically one of the worst thing you can do. 5 beers is a lot. I mean 1 or 2 a night isn't really too bad, but 5 after work is pushing it. You just have to make a decision of which you want more...your achohol buzz after a hard day of work, or your health and muscle.

after consuming a substantion amount of alcohol you body is going to stop fat loss for 24 hours (i think up to 48). So even if you only drink 3 times a week, its killing you for weight loss. I guess no one can tell you what to do. But you have to priorotize. Honestly if you really like beer and the buzz, keep doing it. But don't get down if you have a beer gut. It didn't get that nickname for nothing.

And for the guy who said 12 beers is better than 6 shots of vodka. You a dead wrong. 6 shots of 80 proof liquor has the same amount of alcohol in it as 6 regular beers. Its the standard "one" drink. In there would be 4 or 6 oz of wine i think. But yea, same amount. Not to mention beer has a whole lotta calories in it too. Ergo bombing down the high proof alcohol you can handle with a no calorie chaser and then cruising on the buzz would be the best bet to be "healthy". Not that any drinking is really healthy. But hey i drink now and again so who am i to say its a bad thing.

it takes dedication to look good... drinking that much alcohol, beer especially, is going to always stop you from leaning up... just pure junk empty calories.
Itll get worse as you age too and metabolism slows, do something now before it gets out of control imo... drop it completely and leave it for weekends or proper social occasions e.t.c

In reference to your pussy getting comment, NO I don't need to be ripped up to get ass brother. I am doing it for the simple fact that I am 27 years old. I have been up and down my entire life.Fat skinny fat skinny. So I decided hey why not just go the whole 9 yards and change my lifestyle. So there you have it. I plan on having a great physical appearance and I want to have more energy and I want to look nice. I have the discipline to do it....

    Beer & kidneys

I too am a bit of a drinker. I used to drink heavy 2-3 nights per week and put on about 15lbs in one summer. This past summer I cut back to 1 night a week (unless it was a long weekend) and I've lost about 13lbs. I have a little more to lose but everything my friends do revolves around drinking and eating. I think I got it under control now and am trying to not get drunk (still need a beer every now and then!!) for one month and see what the results are. My question is this - I was feeling tired all the time so I got some blood work done. My kidneys came back with a high creatinine number. It's only 1 point higher than the highest number allowed, but it's still not good. Anyone know if alcohol contributes to high creatinine numbers? I can't find an answer on the net.

Beer is TERRIBLE for men and women. Beer lead to weight gain under muscles which then becomes hard to loose fat pockets. Unless you want a beer belly which many men have, i suggest you stay away from it.

Strong bump, now that this post is active:

I read a study where 1dark ale a day has very beneficial antioxident effects.

after 2 the negatives fiercely outweigh the pros.

with this in mind, and being a craft beer fanatic myself, i limit myself to one beer a week. my wallet thanks me and now i look forward to my beer like nothing else. i was in much better shape before discovering the craft beer world

only.time i break this one beer is when i go downtown... not gona be antisocial when the reason im cutting.is mainly.for social purposes.

I think there's a fair amount of broscience surrounding how bad it actually is to drink alcohol if you're striving to lose weight. What it most of all boils down to is the caloric intake, i highly doubt that drinking for example 1-2 times a month, even if you those times binge it for real, will put you in some sort of "week long black hole of fat retention" and ruin all your weight loss progress.

Speaking for myself i can only say that i've lost good weight/BF during weeks where i drank one night of that week. I have always planned ahead by adjusting down my calorie intake and carbs those particular days and 1-2 days after however, to limit the damage as much as possible.

Would i have lost more weight if i'd stop drinking altogether? No doubt. But i personally have chosen this compromise since it does work for me.

You mean "non-sociable". "Anti-Social" would be like switching stop signs for yield signs, or blowing up a power plant it means "anti-society" not "a loner". Of course, there is the school of thought that says usage is king, but that school of thought is dumb. Not trying to be a dick but now you'll never make that mistake again, and when somebody else does, you, too, can be a pedantic douche like me.

Should I just quit altogether or try and limit to 1 or 2 instead of the 3,4,5 after work that I am used to. I drink light beer..
I love lots of **** that I've had to give up in order to be successful. Is it possible to make progress with your beers? Sure. But will you reach your goals faster by abstaining? Absolutely.

Didn't realize I was responding to a 6 year old thread... cockers.

I've cut out all drinking, because I'm on a cut and because I'm on a low-carb diet. It's been easy so far, mainly because my best friend has moved 200 miles away and my other friends here don't really drink. In a month I'll be at my dad's wedding in switzerland, so I'll drink then, but that'll probably be the only alcohol I have till christmas. It's good as well because it's saved me loads of money.

Yeah this is also why I've given it up. I'm desperate to lose the weight as fast as possible while still at a healthy rate, and alcohol is just going to set me back. I wouldn't want to spend all week being really strict and then blow it all by drinking a ton of beer at the weekend. You have to make sacrifices to get the things you want sometimes. I never thought I could give up beer, but I have, and it's been easy.

I'll have a few once or twice a week & try to stick to the 50 cal stuff.
Drinking like that hasn't really affected my progress however my macs are fuarked on those days because I still maintain my planned caloric intake.

If I did it too often i could see it all going to hell.

I still lost weight drinking copious quantities of beer on week ends. I've quit that now though. I often imagine what I would look like compared to now if I had quit sooner. So we learn..........

my old man drinks like a fish. A minimum of 3 cases a week, usually 5 though. He's got a serious drinking problem. However, he works out for 1.5 hrs a day 4-5 days a week since he was 19 yrs old (used to compete when he was young) and at 53 he still looks fantastic. Its gonna slap him in the face when he gets both his knees replaced and he still consumes that amount of alcohol without any exercise. I feel bad for his liver too..probably looks like a burnt up pork chop at this point.
