    bench rep question

    My goal is to be able to bench 225 20 times. I did 15 reps a couple months ago but could not break through. Any suggestions on how to reach 20? Should I just keep doing lots of reps at higher weight or lift heavier with lower reps to build more muscle. Thanks for the help.

    Ya im not really sure why you want to bench 20 times....doesnt seem much of an accomplishemnt to me

    wouldnt u want to bench something like 300 for 6 rather than 225 for 20??

    it is just a goal that I have that I have never done. I reached my max that I wanted to, now that is my rep goal. None of my friends can do it so I wanted to try it.

    lifting heavy hurts my joints anymore. I've had to back off some so reps are my new goal.

    yes, he can, but I dont count him. he is not normal size. he is 6'6'' 260. I'm only 5'9'' 170

    Makes since, which is also why they rep 225 at the combine usually instead of doing a 1rm.

    Anyway, back on topic, I would just do 3x10 on your bench days and every time you get ten reps for all three sets, add five pounds next time. Bench again as soon as you are recovered, don't wait a certain number of days or anything. If you don't get all your reps, keep the weight the same and try to get more reps next time. After you've added about 15 or 20 pounds for the 3x10, try the 225x20 again.

    How are you for reps at a lower weight?
    If you don't want to lift heavier to reach your goal, I guess you could do lower weight, higher reps. Try 25-30 reps with lower weight. Negatives with 225. Normally, I'd just suggest lifting heavier though.
