    Does muscle keep you warm?

Ok, I asked this in the exercise forum and got told to move it.

    I'm 5'9 137lbs - yep, skinny. My question is:

If I put on muscle and keep a low bf% will I feel warmer in winter?

    Thanks.

I know that I feel warmer when I am consistently working out, but that is probably just due to blood flow, recovery, ect...

Why don't you just wear a sweatshirt?

Okay, thanks guys. I still reckon a 160lb person at 10% bf is going to feel warmer than a 130lb person at 10%bf.

I guess I will see when I get there.

Duh, because the 130LB person only has 13LB of fat, where the 160LB person has 16LBs of fat!

Why wouldnt it make you warmer? It's more tissue covering all of your organs, bones and survival systems. Yes, more muscle will keep you warmer, but I'm not sure how effectively in comparison to a jacket.

more muscle will not keep you warmer. yes theres more muscle covering your organs, but the muscle itself is exposed to the cold. the blood in the muscle gets cooled off and transported back into the body where it cools the rest of your body.and you have to worry about your arms and legs frrezing not your torso or head. your body protects your organsin cold situations by keeping the warmpth there (restricing bloodflow to extrmeties and increasing meatbolism). more muscle doesnt equal warmer

More muscle= warmer than less muscle. And you don't have to keep your organs warm? As far as I know, your overall body temperature is effecting by the core of your body, your torso. If your arms and legs are lost to frostbite, you still survive. Try losing your brain, heart, lungs or liver to frostbite and hope to survive. I am going to look this up, as stating that more muscle does not effect your bodies capability to stay warm is just stupid.

Fat, keeps you warm, because what makes you cold is the temperature of your blood dropping.

Muscle doesn't cover your veins, which means your bloods temperature is still being affected the external temperature.

Fat does cover your veins so that means it will take longer for your bloods temperature to be affected by the external temperature, so it's true blood does keep you warmer for longer...

After googling this question to prove a point to another moron, this blog came up and your answers are moronic I have to clean this up. I have a kinesiology degree from the top department in the country and home of the hottest chicks in the world ASU... Muscles are collectively an organ- a group of tissues that support a common function. One of those PRIMARY functions are to keep your body warm! Muscles constantly burn fuel... this creates heat that keeps your body warm... it also is why people with higher muscle density burn more calories throughout the day, even at complete bedrest. Theoretically, if a human had no muscles, they would die because they would have no way to create heat. Fat is a poor insulator in the human body. People misconceive fat as a common insulator because whales and seals and other creatures that are mammals use it primarily to retain heat. Fat DOES NOT retain much heat in the HUMAN body, it's density and structure around the body is different. People always say... "well fat people overheat and sweat more so clearly fat keeps you warm" ...No, that's only because fat people typically have bigger muscles under all that fat. Even though they have poor diets, their over-eating supplies their body with constant fuel and protein to create muscle mass. How many fat kids have you seen at the gym that don't put up a good amount of weight naturally? I was fatter at 215 pounds at one point and could put up probably 70-80 pounds more than I can now (175 in great shape). This stuff is fact

No. However, it does make sitting down more comfortable. After adding mass to my back, I'm no longer in pain from sitting on a wooden church pew!

Yes it does. Last winter at school I just grew a beard and wore shorts and a tshirt, while everyone else was shivering under many layers of clothing. Dem viking genetics.
