    HEAVY squatters have big butts

    ive noticed that people who squat heavy have large behinds... i am starting into heavy squats but dont want a big ass. is there any way i can target more quads and less glute? (ie. placing 1" wood or plate under heels? - if i but a larger block under my heels, will it target more quads?)

    Either way your butt will get big. The glutes help with hip extension.

    why cant i go over 5 reps? even if i went heavy and under 5 reps, the heavy weight will make me use more glutes since i need anything extra to help me lift it so my glutes will play a bigger role. and your muscles will grow bigger since your going heavy

    wide stance powerlifter style squats are mainly whats gives the big butt...where you "sit back" a lot with the hips and use a lot of hips/hams/glutes. Also, going deep hits the glutes hard.

    if you do a little closer stance and only go down to about parallel you will hit more thighs, less glutes

    also of course hack squats and leg extensions hit thighs with little or no glutes

    Squatting heavy isn't intimidating to me, I squat heavy quite often. I have a pretty severe case of squatters @$$ as well. My quads and hamstrings have gained a decent amount of size too with squatting. I can't say my calves/adductors/flexors have though... Maybe they've gained strength because I've gradually widened my stance (Except calves... I'm not sure calves play a major role in squatting...), but they have not gained size. Although my legs have gained size, it is NOT in proportion to my butt at all. I definitely don't hold a lot of fat either, so don't say it's because I'm a fat powerlifter who eats blended twinkies for a PWO shake. My bodyfat percentage is "relatively low" and my hind end is not the firm/dense/strong butt that you seem to be explaining. Here is a picture I just took today of my back (Since I look kind of fat in avatar), but I assure you squatters butt is not a myth. It's very real, and it could happen to YOU!

    reps above 5 stimulate hypertrophy better then reps below 5, hence not going above 5 reps on squat.

    Calm down roid rage. Less juice in your cereal please. I'm just saying that I squat heavy, I'm not fat, I always break parallel, I squat a few times a week, and somehow I have a mammoth butt. Maybe it's all of those factors, maybe it's only 1-2 of them that created this monstrosity. But squatting heavy, from what I've seen and experienced, will give you a pretty big behind. No "buts" about it.

    Genetics play a role in the size of your muscles too. And how fat is distributed throughout your body. Maybe good squatters have the fat ass genetics, which allows them to be good squatters.

    But the opposite is working for me. I've been doing squats for the past 3 - 4 months and I'm loosing weight from my @$$. This is not a good thing because I like my butt big. I was a 42 and now I'm a 39 which SUCKS!!!!! I wrote about it in my blog today because I'm not a happy camper about this situation.

    High box squats give me bigger quads and help my conventional deadlift a lot, but regular powerlifting stance squats give a bigger butt and help my sumo deadlift while not doing much for quads or conventional deadlift. Take from this what you will.

    You posted this on another thread, you said you wanted a "chick magnet body." That chicks dig "nice asses not big asses." You are 5'8" 140 lbs. you should wish you had a "big" ass. Just like you are not going to go to bed tonight and wake up resembling anything a women wants, you are not going to do a few sets of squats and wake up with that 'big ass" that worries you so. I think everybody has pretty much echoed the same things, genetics, lazy fat asses, women love the squat butt....Just get to the gym and do some squats.
