Ask Kevin Levrone if he considers himself an athlete. He raced one of the fastest men in the world, Dwain Chambers and didn't lose by much. Plus Kevin was probably 50 or 60 pounds heavier than Chambers. I think that puts him in the catagory of an athlete.

ermm... your intelligence is actually pretty damn low, so there is very little evidence to suggest that you are even human...

So an athlete is someone that can run 2 miles non stop??? Someone who doesn't/can’t is not an athlete?

So by your definition skiing, archery, karate, judo, weightlifting, boxing, javelin, disk throwing etc are not sports cause there is a possibility that those athletes are not physically capable to run 2 miles non stop??

I don’t consider bodybuilding to be a sport either, but you are just plain stupid...

First off,Levrone didn't even finish the race because he was so far behind. Palease, if bbers were athletes, the question would never come up. Athletes win by having better PHYSICAL SKILLS than their competitors. Tell me, everyone, what physical skill does Ronnie Coleman perform better on stage than you or I???????????????????? Is Miss Universe an athlete??? Of course not. Neither is Mr. Olympia!

well let's quit just pulling definitions out of our arses. When you were in college and a professor asked you to find a piece of information what is the proper thing to do??? The answer is to look it up from a credible source.

You wouldn't just make up your own sh*t would you? Of course not!

So let's do the mature, educated thing....

    from websters dictionary...

    Main Entry: ath·lete
    Pronunciation: 'ath-"lEt, ÷'a-th&-"lEt
    Function: noun
: a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina

clearly ronnie coleman is trained in exercises that require physical strength or stamina. END OF DISCUSSION. Bodybuilders are athletes. How can you refute that?

Like I said don't just post what YOU people WANT the definition to mean. It doesn't work that way.

And honestly for those of you who think athletes in sports that are judged are not really athletes are you retarded?? I mean diving, gymnastics, etc. are most certainly sports.

Again, let's stop making up our own definitions of what we wish the word to mean. Under every definition I found bodybuilders would be considered athletes.

and as far as bodybuilding being a sport...

    from encyclopedia britannica...

"recreational or competitive activities that involve a degree of physical strength or skill. At one time, sports were commonly considered to include only the outdoor recreational pastimes, such as fishing, shooting, and hunting, as opposed to games, which were regarded as organized athletic contests played by teams or individuals according to prescribed rules."

that would certainly consider bodybuilding contests a sport

I think I might consider bodybuilders atheletes.

On the other hand, bodybuilding doesn't require any athletic ability.

If ESPN considers 4 guys setting around playing poker a sport, which by the way you can drink beer and smoke cigars at the same time, then by all means bodybuilding is definately a sport.

does lifting weights and eating right mean you're a good athlete? no, BUT do the top guys appear athletic or at one point played sports at high levels (ronnie, heath)? yes.
i'd say they're definitely athletes, they put their bodies through more physically demanding activities than pretty much any other kind of 'athlete' in the world.

I think some of you are a little confused...

The question at large was whether or not BB should be considered a sport, not whether or not BBers can perform athletic activities that have nothing to do with BB.

It's obvious by definition, that BB is indeed considered a sport...

Ozzyfan wants to know ":what physical skills are needed to become Mr. Olympia?"

The physical skill to train each muscle group for years consistantly, the physical skill to display that physique once built.

The physical skill to perform cardio for months at a time on a carb restricted diet.

The physical skill to pose without shaking all over the place, to display one's physique with a look of professionalism and flex every muscle group simutaneously.

If anyone thinks it's easy....try it.

For the record...Ozzyfan has never competed.

here is the thing douchenozzle, its not about walking on a treamill, doing 4 sets of squats or eating a lot of chicken. it's doing all that day in and day out with complete discipline and learning how to display your body perfectly. think of it this way, when you're standing in your bathroom looking at your most likely mediocre physique, are you doing a front double bi and flexing your abs, lats, quads and calves....or just your biceps?

I've never competed (yet) BUT close friends have and have showed me how to hit certain poses and it's very difficult. any random dip**** couldn't do it.

Top Level bodybuilders are far more conditioned than the average person, which shows athletic ability.

Wether it is a sport or not has little to do with athletic ability based on what the dictonary states. Are Special OPs troops athletic? Yes. Do you have to be in great athletic condition? Yes. Are they required to perform well in various traditional sports? No. Are they required to have well above normal coordination, endurance, strength, and agility? Yes.

What can Ronnie do physically besides showing his body off on stage? Lift insane about of weight (like most bodybuilders) that the average man can't.

The Advanced workouts of the 70's, 80's, and 90's were brutal and like a measure of physical fitness just to be able to get through it.

Here's a common fallacy I see here: BUT "insert name" looks like a bodybuilder (or IS a bodybuilder) AND an athlete! Good. That doesn't make bodybuilders athletes. If some athletes are bodybuilders, that doesn't make all bodybuilders athletes. If you don't get this you probably score under 80 in an IQ test. Then again, that wouldn't make all bodybuilders stupid, only some.
