What is the difference between the two? If the whey protein I supplement with has 4.5g of Glutamic Acid per serving, is it necessary that I supplement with L-Glutamine? I want to be effective but I don't want to be wasting time and money.

one of the main problems with supplementing glutamine is that most of it is oxidized by tissues of the intestinal tract or taken up by the liver and kidney.

From most of the research I have read, taking glutamine as an additional supplement only makes a difference in extreme catabolic states such as burn victims.
Additionally, most of the glutamine you ingest will be degraded in the liver and intestine. Some will be converted to glucose or metabolized for energy.
High doses of glutamine can cause a competition for absorption of other amino acids which share the same transporter.
In my opinion, a good diet with adequate protein will contain enough glutamine and glutamic acid.
