There are many things that you can do to build up your basic skills and reaction times. I know they are expensive but you could try and get hold a rugby traininer (i think this the name) or pass developer ball... these are weighted rugby balls. VERY VERY good for building up wrist strength.

Another is you can get a "reaction" ball

    http://www.1st4sport.com/1st4sportsi...sp?prod=AGBALL

Throw that against the wall. That is good for you.

Running along a set distance, i usuall use the 5 yard line just off the try line run/jog and then pass the ball against the post.... helps you to hit a targert. To make it different... you have set cones on the line so pss at these cones so your first one would: be lateral with the post so you would be doing a flat pass
second one: few yards in front of the first
    third one: few yards again.

Then once you have hit each one of them 5 - 10 times change hands and then once you have done that move out to 10m's away from the post and be STRICT on your self. If you miss the post when you pass it.... start phase again. So if you muck up on cone 3.... go straight back to cone one and start again.

Ill have a think. Im jsut off to coach my little ones and then ill come back and post a few more ideas up.

    Will
very good post, i have access to these weighted balls and they have really improved my passing... my passing used to be SHOCKING but now my pass to the left is probably the best in the team and i play flank....

Fly-half/centre... Was thinking also probably more on the lines of running/stepping skill drills because we don't really have the time to do a lot of that at training. But if you've got any good ideas on what two guys could do to improve handling as well, that'd be sweet... not just like passing it back and forth cause it doens't really have any impact on actual game play imo (eg can easily throw long passes when under no pressure already, need some kind of way to make it more like a game).

EDIT: Also thanks a lot Will that's the kind of ideas I'm looking for.

    flyhalf and center-

on your own you can practise your kicking alot, tactical and for poles... other things that you could do are things like agility ladders with ball then pass it, be creative, there is lots you can do...

p.s. sit on the couch and watch rugby watch what the player in your position does and evalute and formulate how you can take his positive attributes and apply them to your game... this is very underestimated:-)

you think we could do variations of the main compounds in bill stars? I vastly prefer other versions of rowing to conventional pendlay rows, and i dont like flat benching because it puts a great deal of pressure on my collarbone.

bill starrs doesn't call for pendlay rows, its just a normal barbell row i think. correct me if i am wrong... no deloading of the weight between each rep... if it does that you are not doing it right then, check your form out

yes, that is how bill starrs originally set the program up as... cleans instead of rows and high pulls instead of deadlifts...

lol we'll just take the pm conversation to here, yeah its a d1-d2 school so some mixed talent. only issue with bill stars is the lack of olympic lifts i see, im not ignorant in their execution and i dont like ****ing with premade programs, but you reckon i could do hang clean/press and then do rowing as well?

yeah this is what im gonna do i think... keeping the rows and deadlift but also adding the cleans on row days and snatches on deadlift day as i need the extra volume... i think this would be a good idea

Well I have got a few SAQ skills that you can do... you dont need ladders or anything jsut a few bottles/cones. I will write it down a bit later.

What weight routines are people using? I am doing alot of olly lifts and few positional exercises.

Only one game left of the season. We ran rings around 3rd place yesterday. It was a great feeling. They beat us 35-0 first time we played them and yesterday we stuff them and they said it was thier strongest team. We have now stopped them from promotion this year. Which feels even better. We are currently in 5th place and only just got promoted in to this league last year.

What standard of rugby do you guys play?

I suppose my team could be said to be... above average, we beat a lot of teams, but we rarely challenge for the cup (the way its organised in my county, there's a big tournament at the end of the year, beginning with mini-leagues of 4 teams, the top going into the cup, the second going to the plate and the bottom to the bowl), although last season we were one point off the semi-final (where Blackheath would have slaughtered us).
This year the standard has improved a lot and so I would say we are maybe top 15-20 in the county, not that great really but we are on the up. Won the plate at a 7s tournament today comfortably.

I have ambitions to play for the county this year or next, looking likely to be next as I have a few issues with my game as well as deciding what position I want to play =P

Sounds good. i take it that it is kids rugby not mens? I know it is all different set ups all over th world.

At the moment i play for a mens team that is quite good, as i said 4leagues off premship rugby, so if we hopefully get promotiom next year we will start to get paid ?100 a game. Which is not bad at all.

i got called up for my county this year to go back and play u21's and also had south west england trials but dint manage to get through, as i work fukll time and cant get to all the training and also cant do enough personal training.

Im also playing for a few teams that repersent the city etc... hard to explain./

Yeah under16s atm. Probably will play some men's rugby next year when I'm 17 (I hate that rule half my team could get into the 3rd/4ths/5ths and not suffer more than in a tough game of u16s). Had a Kent trial a couple of years ago, made it through the first round but never made it anywhere since... but this summer I'm going to do some proper work. Shame about the not having enough training time, guess us kids don't realise how lucky we are! 9 week summer holiday this year What position do you play at?

I've only just started to get serious about the conditioning side of rugby, cause I managed to get along in previous seasons but now this year its all got a little bit more serious and suddenly 16 stone ripped tanks are turning up all the place. But this summer (starting properly after my exams), my plan is to start Rippetoes until I've got some barbell experience (currently: about 6 gym sessions lol), with either sprinting or rugby practice or hey maybe even both on days off.

I play club rugby here in the US on an alumni team for my lawschool. I only get a chance to play maybe 3 tourneys a year but its a ton of fun. Actually we had one this weekend went 1-1 which was pretty fun.

Played rep at schoolboys and U19, then Premier Grade in Brisbane for 5 years (I haven't retired but giving the body a rest). Coached schools, club and uni teams for 8 years, now my primary job Also worked for a S14 franchise.

Actually considering an offer to coach (and possibly play) in Canada for a 1-3 years, something I've wanted to do and weighing up whether the time is right and which offer to take up. With one of the offers I could essentially become a full-time coach/athlete which would be pretty sweet.
