On movements like the lateral raises I would only do a couple of sets and keep the weight relatively light. With all the shoulder presses and bench stuff I would think about losing the jerk, as in just do cleans. Apart from I'd just keep an eye on how things go, deload every 4-5 weeks.

My plan is very simple at the minute, get strong at under 220lbs. Then look at playing next season, although there aren't many places for a burnt out tight head.

Thanks for the advice. Well as it is the preseason all im lookin gto do is get stronger as im finding when i come up against old blokes my technique beats them but some times i fin that i do need the strength. I was looking at the 5x5 but i felt that there jsut wasnt enough there to keep me going, minimal amount of work. Have you used it before? Do you think that it would be a good routine to follow?

With regards to the lat rises etc, yep there are only going to be light weight... its jsut to included a little shoulder rehab... which i may drop as ill do it first thing in the mornings when i get up. As i do resistant band stretches for my shoulders.

Also what do people think to heavy lifts and then on a seperate day doing a speed session? I was possibly thinking about having 3-4 heavy lift sessions and then a speed session?

I ran it ages ago and it took my 5RMs to 190kg/132.5kg/190kg for squat/bench/deadlift and I put on about 15lbs. Its a solid, proven programme for someone looking to get stronger and bulk up.

Works for Westside and they are some of the strongest people on the planet. Have you looked into some of the Defranco Westside stuff? Hes adapted it for athletes and has a pretty big success rate with NFL draftees.

Thanks, i have jsut had a little look and think i will be able to adapt that to fit me. Due to kettle bells can be the dynamic becasue there will be alot of jumping, balancing on balls etc.

Repition work can be the sandbag work im going to do on thursday. I think that this could work even better. Going to have a sit down over lunch and try and have a look see if i can put anything together and see what people think.

Sometimes you might think you're better at one position, but the coaches have an outside perspective so they're usually better judges.

A woman doesn't come home one night. The next day she tells her husband she slept over at a girlfriend's place. Her husband calls 10 of her best friends. None know anything about it.

Its ah ard thing, rugby coaches are stubborn and reluctant to try people in new positions. Speed is a very good attribute to have at number 8 in the lower levels. From my experience coaches prefer a faster lighter number 8 as sometimes the bigger slower guys are easy to take down and the lighter guys can bulk up as they get older without loosing much pace.

For oyu i would jsut concentrate on maybe getting ab it faster and getting as much game time as possible and jsut take your chances whenever you get them.
Strength, size, power and speed arent achievable without dedication, focus and determination.

It could be a simple case of the coach trying to get his best 8 forwards on the pitch. It looks like you have good size, if your skills are good you could really make a quality second row.

What does everyone think of the England side to tour NZ?

    England squad
Backs: M Brown (Harlequins), P Sackey (Wasps), D Strettle (Harlequins), T Ojo (London Irish), M Tait (Newcastle), M Tindall (Gloucester), J Noon (Newcastle), T Flood (Newcastle), O Barkley (Bath), D Cipriani (Wasps), C Hodgson (Sale Sharks), R Wigglesworth (Sale Sharks), P Richards (London Irish), D Care (Harlequins).
Forwards: A Sheridan (Sale Sharks), T Payne (Wasps), M Stevens (Bath), J Hobson (Bristol), L Mears (Bath), D Hartley (Northampton), D Paice (London Irish), S Borthwick (Bath, capt), B Kay (Leicester), N Kennedy (London Irish), T Palmer (Wasps), T Croft (Leicester), J Haskell (Wasps), J Worsley (Wasps), M Lipman (Bath), T Rees (Wasps), N Easter (Harlequins), L Narraway (Gloucester).

I think it's not bad at all, glad to see Lipman Ojo and Strettle involed, but there is one selection glaring at me: JOE ****ING WORSLEY. I have never seen a player so able to single handedly ruin a passage of play by opting for the "hurrr i are run straight at opposition" approach rather than passing.

It's not a bad selection by any means. But selecting the team to play New Zealand is the easy part. I can't see us having any kind of chance unless we learn how to utilise the players we pick properly.

Case in point, I know Vainikolo isn't in the squad this time, because of injuries or some such shizzle, but I can count on one hand the amount of times we got the ball to him in open play and let him run with it. Having him chase kick after kick isn't using him to his potential, and neither is passing to him when he's a yard away from contact [although I realise that's sometimes necessary.]

Basically, I hope Martin Johnson isn't as tactically inept as Brian Ashton was or we're even more doomed than I thought.

lol harsh but often true. i think Johnson will have a tough time in NZ, but the squad does look strong, especially the front 5, not really sure about 8.
Question is, will he opt for an WC 03 stratagy, or play a more open game?

Martin Johnson will get a free ride this summer because he won't be there. Anything that goes wrong won't be blamed on him and will fall on Rob Andrews. Never has an England manager had it easier for a tour of NZ.

Forwards running straight at players instead of gaps or passing isn't just a problem Joe Worsley has, its a problem that runs throughout English rugby.

Although I do believe Vanikolo was underused he was out of his depth in the Six Nations. A big part of Rugby League is how to deal with the transition from your set of 6 to the oppositions set of 6 so kick chasing should be natural to him but he was rubbish. Not to mention his hands under high balls which I would also expect to be better from a former Super League winger. I hope he turns it around because he COULD be awesome.

But Let me Put it in Perspective for you all: 6'3 is too short for an International level Second Row Forward....it is however an ideal height for the back row

That's not really true at all. If you can jump well, and are a good player, you can be 6' 3'' and a second row. Using height as an excuse is pretty weak...

I dont mean to be rude but that is utter bollocks.......... it does not matter how tall you are. You gotta be good at so so many things to play internationals. I dont mean to be rude but if you cant kick an openside flanker who is playing out of position out of your team you must have alot of work to do to become an international player.

true it is a tad on the short side but, i dont know oyur bodyfat etc. I know a number 8 who played irish schools u19s, u20s is in the ulster rugby team and he is only approaching 240lb mark hes usually around 16 stone. At a younger age it usually the bigger and faster people perform at number 8 level at the younger ages.

You are a big guy but size isnt everything, my best friend represented ireland u19s in the back row playing 7 when he weighed 185lbs, its about aggressiveness and skill etc.

Im not being negative on you, you could maybe jsut do with loosing a bit of bodyfat? Quickening up a bit that will vastly improve your game.

On a side note, earlier this year i played against the usa u19s on their tour of ireland and was a thoroughly impressed with their team.

6ft3 is slightly below the average of an international lock but i completely agree with you on all the other things size doesnt really matter when it comes to rugby, ive seen it a million times on the park, the biggest guy get drilled by the smallest guy.

If its a question of being a good line out jumper there are plenty of good ones that stand at 6ft 3-4. In the days of more dynamic lineouts it more about how quick you get up than how high, especially at 4.

ill agree with you on that one. We have a person on our team that weighs 10 stone and he is a flanker but not a single person will get past him. I have seen him but 22 stone blocks on thier arses....

Bottom line, 6'3 is too short to play lock at an international level. Mark Chisholm is 7cm taller than that, and although he has played many tests at lock, is really considered too short (compensates by being an freaky athlete.

    That said:
    1) You are still a long way off international level
    and
    2) if you can play at a higher level as a lock (as opposed to sitting on sideline as an 8 etc), aren't you getting exposure to higher level rugby and Improving as a player? Which in the long term will improve the likelyhood of playing at a higher level no matter the position.

Also keep in mind, away from the professional ranks, there are very few 2m tall locks running around. As a example there are very few tall players at the level below s14 in Australia. Premier, 1st and 2nd grades would all have locks in the 190-195 range. So while it is not ideal, it shouldn't hold you back from playing at the highest level you are capable of no matter what that is.

George Smith stands at about 5'10, Phil Waugh at 5'9, both have captained Austrailia. Neil Back was told from childhood he was too small for rugby. Rugby being the great game it is, isn't all about size, and although strength is important you can't deadlift your way around the pitch.

Maybe I'm taking a romantic view to all this, and I don't know how the international scene works in any other country, but as far as I know the best players in their position play.
