I like Knox(R) gelatine w/ glucosamine b/c it has 10,000 mg of chondroitin per scoop. It is tasteless and stirs into milk, orange juice, water, or protein shakes. It is relatively inexpensive at Wal-Mart or Sam's Club.

hehe, but as for a supplement i like the optimum glucosamine plus csa, highest condentrations and lowest price, essentially the best bang for the buck that i have found.

what exactly does chondroitin and glucosamine do? do they help rebuild connective tissue and cartilege, and how do they do that?

they dont rebuild any tissue. they reduce inflammation and "lubricate" the joint.

I started taking glucosamine and chondroitin about 3 months ago. The changes are subtle, but I used to have a hard time sleeping because of joint pain in my shoulders after working out. Now I hardly notice it so it must be working. Supposedly, you have to take it for a month before you begin noticing results.

As I understand it, Flax Seed Oil is best for preventive measures. But for repair and rehab, a glucosamine-chondroitin, and maybe msm supp is best.

    glucosamine for me

I decided to try straight Glucosamine Sulfate from Optimum, i figured i love their 100% whey, why not try their glucosamine, it was cheaper than other brands on the cyberstore. I must say glucsosamine REALLY works, I had a dislocated shoulder due to a seizure not too long ago and although i've been working out and stuff, my shoulder didn't seem to get better, so I did some research on this site and chose to go for glucosamine sulfate. I was thinkin of getting a glucosamine chondroitin but then I read something about chondroitin not absorbing too well. Anyway after just one month of using it, my shoulder feels almost completely better. I have a greater range of motion on my bad shoulder and it's gettin better noticably. I'm sure any brand glucosamine sulfate would have worked just as well. Glucosamine sulfate worked so well for me that i was really adamant about my father taking it as he's gettin old and feels arthritic pains a lot more now.

It's more for joints but it might help a little. I know that Glucosatrin has a mild anti-inflamatory effect but it's really for joints. Your doctor probalby will give you something for the pain though like Naproxin which is basically like a stronger version of Aleve.

    Rick,

develop a daily stretching routine around getting flexability in the hamstrings & lower back.
90% of the time it's lack of flexability through the hammies and lower back and a stength imbalance between the lower back & abs the causes the injury in the first place.

stretch whenever you get time as many times a day as you can.

when i had the same condition i felt much better after a good stretching session.

also plenty of crunches to strengthen the abs. don't do any lower back work if it's a new injury.

this will work in conjunction with the above supps you mentioned.
add some flax or fish oil as well.

    Richie
