    I'm finally starting a contest prep journal-jlay

    ok, I have been lurking for a long time and have learned so much from everyone else's journals. I thought I would start my own and see what kind of feed back I can get and it will help me be help accountable. I started prepping for my first figure show about a little over 3 wks ago. I have 9 more wks to go. The competion is June 3. I have been seriously lifting for about 2 1/2 years. I used to just run long distance before that. I am a bulimic in recovery. I was in inpatient rehab for 2 1/2 months about 3 years ago, so I am very proud to be where I am today. My structured meals help me so much to stay on track. I am 5 ft 6 and a 1/2 and weigh 132lbs. I have had my bodyfat done by 2 different people and got 2 totally different results, so I have no idea what it really is. One said 14 and one said 22. This is a big difference. I personally think I am somewhere in the middle of the 2. oh well, mainly I am going by looks. I will post some pictures as soon as I get my husband to take some and figure out how to post them, ( I am computer illiterate) By the way my husband is doing a BB show the week after me, so I have support and a dieting partner.Alright, this is what my diet looks like right now. I don't have much variety from day to day because it complicates things for me, but I enjoy most of it.
    M1 1 cup egg whites, 1/2 cup oats,2 tbs flaxseeds
    M2 1 scoop protein powder, 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes or strawberries
    M3 6 oz chix or lean meat, small sweet potato,1 cup green veggies, 1 tbs natural peanut butter
    M4 Myoplex lite
    M5 6 oz chix or lean meat, 1 cup green veggies
    M6 1 scoop protein powder, 12 almonds
    This is 1410 cals, 165 g protein, 97 g carbs, 23 g fat
    I will post workouts later. Today is just cardio and abs. I did 20min on elliptical and 20 min speed intervals on treadmill this morning. I get bored staying on one machine for too long. Sorry for the long book I wrote, but I am so excited

    Hi... wanted to welcome you to journaling!!! I see you are doing a show on the same day i am!!! Sweet!! I am doing figure also.... Which one are you doing... if you dont mind me asking.... I am doing one in Jackson, MS.... And I have a past like you.. the ED thing... and my fiance is a BB also.... but not competing anymore... but it is so nice to have someone that knows what you are talking about and knows how things work!!! We workout together also... and push each other... so it is just so nice to have that relationship....

    Will be following your journal.... All looks good so far!!!

    I will be doing the Central Florida Classic in Bradenton, Florida. This is not far from Tampa. I ended up doing quads tonight because I hate doing hams and quads together. After I get done with the one,I am extremely weak to work the other. I am really trying to bring up my hams as well so I like to pay extra attention to them.

    I just started doing free weight squats and I can't do much weight because I lean forward way too much. I used to do them on a smith machine.

    My legs are very weak I know

    Today all my meals went well. I can really tell I am on edge. When I go to work it is taking all my power to be nice to people, and that is not normal for me. I guess it is just because I just dropped my calories from 1700 to 1410 a couple of days ago. I still seem to have all my strenth at the gym though. Today I did chest,triceps, and calves

    Hey jlay..... Wanted to check in on you.. Workouts look great..... I looked back and seen you are about 1 inch taller than me... as i am 5'5 1/2 .. and you where not really sure as what your bf was.... But i guess my point is .. are you sure you need to drop your calories so low so soon? I know we have the same date for comp. (june 3)... but i am still eating around 1650 to 1700 on workout days.. and trying to lower them on my rest day to like 1500ish...and plan on eating around 1800 to 1900 on leg days. I dont want to say eat more... just dont want you to get burned out.... And if you are dropping them to loose bf.. well that is another thing... Do you have a trainer? I hope on dont step on your toes.. just guess worried... as i am trying to keep them somewhat high.. and then when it gets closer i am going back to have my bf checked and make sure i am on track... the guy who did mine measured at 9 sites.... and said i dont need to drop anymore... or my upper body might be too lean... so he told me to stop taking my bc pills and that would lean out my legs.. in about 4 to 6 weeks.. i hope the crap he is right!! LOL cause i would like to be at least 10%.... but we shall see.... I am add maybe one more day of cardio.... i was doing 3 cardio sessions a week but think i am going to get 4..... see if that helps... and of course stay as heavy as i can on weights....

    Anywho... I hope you dont get up-set with me... last thing i want... and if i did just let me know.. as this is just my opinion.. and i am seeing if it works for me.... but if you still have the energy.. and your strength... then that is what works for you...

    Alright I just had my oats with flaxseeds and egg whites(not together) I'm off to the gym.
    Minick- I know what you mean about the cals being too low. YOU did not offend me at all, that is why I started a journal-to get input from others. I don't have a trainer bc I don't have a lot of extra money to pay one right now. I wish I did. The first 3 wks of my diet my cals were at 1700, and I did not drop any weight at all, so I just decreased my cals Mon to 1400. I have seen your pictures and I know I have a lot more to lose than you, so maybe this will work for me. If I start dropping too quickly I can go up a little. I appreciate all the input. By the way, did you end up ordering your suit from fitwear- Jodie? I am like you , I am freaking out bc I have not ordered mine yet. I am just afraid my measurements are going to change too much. I emailed Jodie yesterday morning and have not gotten a response. I guess I will call her bc time is so short.

    About the suit... well yes and no.. I have been in contact with Jodie.. but she is suppose to send fabric samples.. and i have not gotten anything.. she said she would send by last weekend... she is scaring me to death.. cause she is the only person i have contacted about doing them... so i would love for her to be more on it.. so to speak.. i have asked questions via email about the measurements... the time frame.. blah blah.. and not gotten a answer yet... so it is like.. well i am the customer.. and should i keep on at her or will that piss her off? you know... i mean the day i emailed her first .. she responded really quickly... so just not sure.. you might have better luck calling as i think if nothing by friday i am going to do.... cause i have to know.. or else i am just going to go with someone else.. i really hate too.. but like you we need these things!!! Let me know if you find out anything too... hopefully we will get her to get us something!! LOL

    Ok.. I agree if that is working for you on the calories.. then go for it.. i am just hoping i can somewhat stay at this and not have to add to much cardio.. as i just hate cardio.. so trying to keep workouts intense so i can burn what i need to stay here... and maybe just maybe a little lower!!!

    Congratulations!!!! You are so awesome for starting a contest prep journal. I will be reading with excitment. I am excited to see your pics too.

    You are taller than me and weight less than me though so probably a bit different. But that's not important. I will still love to watch you

    Everything is looking good too. Calories might be a bit low --Nine weeks out right? And pretty lean so be careful.....I crashed and burned big time on my first prepartion and it pretty much destroyed me for about four months. I would never want to see it happen to someone else. Mistakes will help you to learn a lot though.

    hi jlay - just wanted to say hi. i chked out your diet. i agree with the others, at 9 weeks out your cals, in my opinion, are too low. its way to early in contest prep to drop them that low. trust me and everyone else on here that says that. you can boost your cals by boosting up your protein intake by a couple of ounces or by adding in one more meal of protien and veggies. but at this point in your prep, the low cal diet, you will be absolutely miserable in a couple more weeks if not already.

    ok I think I may up my cals again Sat. I would do it tomorrow, but I am already having my cheat day anyway. And Six, you are right I am already starting to feel pretty rough. I've got good news though. I got my bf tested today again on the little handheld machine. I know it is not accurate, but I just wanted to see if it has gone down since the last time I used it. I have gone from 13.4 to 10.2 in 6wks. I know this is not my real bf, but as long as it is going down I don't really care. This is what I ate today:
    1/2 cup oats, 1 cup egg whites. 2tbs flaxseeds (this is my fav meal)
    1 cup strawberries, 1 scoop protein
    6 oz chix breast, medium sweet potato, 1/2 cup broccoli, 1 tbs nat pb
    Myoplex lite
    6 oz ground lean turkey, 1/2 cup spinach, 1 tbs nat pb
    1 scoop protein, 1 tbs nat pb
    170 g protein
    100 g carbs
    29 g fat
    1540 total cals
    I added an extra tbs of pb today
    I did 30 min of speed and resistance intervals on the arc trainer elliptical today and abs
    I did 3 sets of hanging leg raises, 25 reps-supersetted with crunches , 3sets of 25
    Then I did weighted crunches on a declline with 15 #db across chest-1 set
    same thing with 20# db-25 reps
    3 sets of twists with pole across back 100x each set

    Hey jlay.... Wonderful news about the bf going down.. I know i have the calipers at home.. and i know they are not right..but i still use it as a gage!! i am going back to get the 9 site done about the begining of May.. make sure that guy gets the same thing or *crosses fingers*less!! I would love to be 10% think that would really bring out my legs.... And glad you have decided to up your calories... I know we get desperate at times.. and scared it will not come off if we dont start something now.. but six. is right you will just start feeling like crap.. and just plan fatigue..... So good for you!!!

    OH.. I emailed Jodie last night.. she has promised that she will get my suits.. with no problem... also stated that some other girls might contact her.... so just letting you know she should be able to do yours also...

    Hi, Jlay! Just wanted to pop in and say hello. I agree with everyone else about your cals being a little low, but it sounds like you've got everything undercontrol now!

    well yesterday I was supposed to have a cheat meal and for some reason there was not one thing I had really been craving. Finally I decided some eggs and a waffle sounded good, so I ate at the waffle house with all the greasy food. Of course I decided to get the big breakfast with sausage(I usually don't even eat sausage),cheesy scrambled eggs, hashbrowns, toast, and a waffle. I think I have shrunk my stomach bc I usually could have eaten it all, but I felt so full. I made myself eat it all bc I knew I would not be getting any more stuff like that for a while. I felt so sick. I felt like when I used to binge when I was really into my eating disorder.But of course, I did not purge or anything and I actually did not feel guilty about it I just felt physically sick. I am still bloated today, but I know it will go away. I had an awsome wo yesterday too and am feeling really sore today. Here is how it went:

    well the weekend was really hectic. I worked all weekend. I have some catching up to do on journaling. Saturday I got up and did cardio. I did 10 min on the stationary bike,15 min on elliptical doing intervals, and 10 min on treadmill at 10 incline and 3.9 speed-this totalled 35 minutes. Then I worked all day and night. Sunday I took the whole day off from working out and worked a double at work. I had really bad cravings Saturday and Sunday since I cheated Friday. I think I became addicted to sugar again after one meal. I got through it though and the cravings are starting to go away.

That made me feel really good that it is noticeable. also, my husband took pictures of me today and I was so excited. I went to post them and it said they were too many pixels. He has been playing with our digital camera to resize them. He says we can do it, but they are going to be really bad pictures(quality). oh well we will try it anyway. We are going to have to retake pictures though, with that special setting on. I was so frustrated bc I really wanted to get some pictures on here. Well I will get it done ASAP.

    Hey jlay.... Yeah.. doesnt it feel great when other people besides like your husband or my fiance compliment on you!!! Just some how gets you going even more!!! And that is great someone said something to you!! You workouts are looking great... I know how it is about working all the time and not getting things in you want too.. but just hang in there...

    I think I am going to order my suits through suits you swimwear because they have an actual store in Tampa and I don't live far from there. They said I can actually go in there and get them to do my measurements and I can try on a few different styles just to see what style I like best. They are reasonably priced too. They may not be the best suits, but for my first show that is just a little local one I'm sure it will be fine. If anyone has used them before let me know what you thought about them.

I know how it is to be sooo freaking busy that you dont even have time to turn around!!! but at least you are keeping with your workouts and meals... dont worry so much about getting time to post... we all have our weeks!! LOL I ordered my suits too!! from Jodie... Darn i wish i had a place close that i could at least go try them on and stuff... that will be great!! and then them taking your measurements.. instead of you wondering if you go the right spot.... I would go with them.. although i have not had any experience with them.. i am sure it will be fine....

    Hope you are having a good day.. Tomorrow is good friday.. so yeah i get to be off work!!! but will be busy on the freaking cardio.. then going to gym later on that afternoon!!!

    pictures-7 1/2 weeks out

    I really did not want my face to be in these, but I was not sure how to black them out. I was not smiling or anything bc I thought my husband was cutting my head off. Oh well, just ignore the faces. These pictures really helped me to see how bad my posing is too. When I stand in front of the mirrror I can correct what I am doing wrong, but it is hard when you can't see yourself

    Your doing a great job. I just have a few tips for posing. On the back shots make sure that you have not one crease in on your butt Stick it out almost curving the bottom of your back (which will help keep the bottom tight). To make your V taper Which you have a very nice one, push those lats out and make sure to keep everything tight and to bring out those calves ever so slightly push up on your toes(dont make it noticeable). Start practicing with out the mirror have someone just snap shots or record you doing your posing. Make sure that you can hold those up to a minute with out shaking. Oh and in the relaxed position bring that chest up like you are confident. and make sure to have legs together facing front to make the quads look bigger point toes out but knees together. The judges count off for not having legs together.

    Hey jlay - thanks for posting in my journal, I'd be happy to answer any questions you have about my diet. Regarding the carbload on the 18th meal, I really liked this diet and will do it again when I want to lean out. I can do it now if I want just changing the cals. to stay lean while building lean body mass if I wanted but I like eating carbs everyday at this moment. If I do another show I will definiately start this diet earlier like 8 weeks out. I got it at 2.5 weeks out and it did what my nutritionist said it would. He said it was the most drastic diet he could put me on to lose fat and retain muscle and it did. I went from about 15% to 10% by show time. Of course, cardio also had a lot to do with it as well.

    Your pics look really good. You have an really nice lat spread which will definately help. Sunshine was right on with the posing tips and I would suggest purchasing a posing video. On thing I learned that I don't think I did was to really suck in my stomach on every turn and lift my chest. This can be difficult when trying to flare lats and flex bis, and shoulders but looking at the other girls it really made their wastes look small. Remember your posing should not be comfortable, meaning some poses will hurt if not you may not be doing them right. Also, huge piece of advice...always smile even when not facing the judges and make eye contact with them occasionally. Finally, practice the kurtsi sp? You present yourself much better when they introduce you and you wave and kurtsi. Good luck...you'll do great!

    Nice pics, Jlay! Your shoulders look great. They are very broad and have nice shape. Which association is your show for? I am only familiar with NPC and INBF, but the posing is slightly different for both. One small thing I noticed is your hands. It's the hardest thing in the world to do, but make sure you keep them relaxed and natural looking. The back pose is also a hard one... you have great lats and a nice v-taper, you just need to work on spreading those lats a little more so the judges can see them!

    Here is a tip I learned from a video. If you are having trouble getting the back pose, bend over and place your hands on your knees and spread your shoulder blades. Then, keeping your arms wide, slowly stand up. Your back should look just right now. Obviously, you can't do that when you pose, but it will help you learn how to "feel" your lats.

    thanks you guys for the wonderful compliments. Coming from ya'll it means a lot. I have seen ya'll's pictures. I am really not seeing any progress, but I guess it is bc I look at myself everyday and it is gradual. Other people at the gym have said they see a difference, so I hope I am progressing. Today I did legs for the second time this week. It was a lighter day though. I am going to try to do legs 2x's a wk from now on, or atleast some extra lunges on a second day. I forgot my workout journal, so I can't remember the weight I did but this is what I did:

    And for that video kay.mentioned .. i got it also.. and it is a great dvd... you can get at www.tanjijohnson.com Seems like it took a week or so to get it.. but it has some great stuff on it... I have watched a couple a times.. and starting to practice.. man it is hard to get my small lats to show.. but that has been my focus.. so working them out 2 times a week... hope something will pop out before show...
