    Bench press-DB Road to 150's

    Ok Yeah I know before you guys start flaming on me. I already did a search!

    Anyway, Here's my question, I Am looking to Do a contest with 150lb dumbells for 10 reps on flat bench. Its a $1000 contest my gym is holding
    Anyway Our highest dumbells right now is 105lbs. I do these for 4x8.
    We wont have the 150's for another 2 weeks. When we do get them we will only have the 150's for a week before the contest.

    What other exercise can prepare me for the 150lbs?
    Should I stay away from doing Barbell bench for now?

    I'd be amazed if you got the dbs up(for 1rep) let alone for more than one rep. That's a huge jump, there's no way you can do it in that short of an amount of time.

    Duct tape weight on the end of the 100's to jack them up. Lots of powerlifters I know do this where their local gyms only go up to the 140's etc. Just make sure you use lots of tape!

    Ok so if i am getting 105x4x8 then what should i be able to push for 1x10?

    I forgot to mention this is also using the power hooks that hang off the BB. So i will not be picking them off the ground either.

    If you are doing 105's for 4 sets of 8, I think you could be close to 1 rep with the 150's????

    They would be tough as FVk though getting those from your thighs to the pressing position. Do they let you use those hooks?

    Aslo this isnt a drug tested contest. *Hint* Im 1 and a 1/2 weeks on. So strength gains will be at max by contest week.

    We are really only trying to make our own money back, This money comes from us buying waters, shirts, and $5 a month out of our gym due a month they hold. But hey for $1000 I'd be stupid not to try.

    In other words if a 300lb guy comes in and does 10reps easy, compared to me 200lb guy struggling and almost not getting 10......I WIN!

    Thanks for telling me i cant do it instead of trying to help a guy out on what certain muscle groups to work on more w/ heavier weight or what not. I am not a powerlifter so i know very little on going this heavy w/ db bench.

    I guess this board isnt an information board anymore, Instead its just a board to rag on guy's. Very good you's all get an A+ for doing so.

    I would go with shoulder presses w/dumbbells and dumbbell incline. Maybe even throw some flyes in there as well but dont overdo it and keep reps on the assistance stuff low so you get used to heavier weight.

    LOL Mike Hara would win this, no contest...I've watched him handle the 150 db's like a toy at the end of his workout and he's only 165 lbs and he's getting old! Master 2 Class I believe...


    poppa sorry but some of these people are just being blunt and telling it how it is...why give you false hope? 105s from the 150s is a huge difference...that is like saying you can only rep 225 4x8 and will be giving 315 a ride for reps....anyway there is pretty much nothing you can do to get significantly stronger in the next 3 weeks...I don't care what you're on....give yourself sometime to get stronger and maybe they will have that competition again next year...

    Ok sorry guys. Maybe i should read the rules and everything closer before i ask your advice.

    The gym paper says: To compete in the contest you must be able to preform 10 reps with as much weight as possible using a strict form. Power hooks will be provided by the gym, It is up to the contestant to use them if they wish. This contest will be judged by Bodyweight, Age, And weight for the 10 reps.

    The given example on the sheet:

    Member xxx with the body weight of 213lbs at 39yrs preformed 10reps with the 145's Raw.

    Member xxy with the body weight of 194lbs at 21yrs preformed 10reps with the 160's .With power hooks.

    Then thay have the member xxx as the winner. due to bw, age

    Now my problemis this, My brother is also entering. Bw of 190lbs age 30yrs doing 130's x10

    I want to beat him out by doing the 150's because im 200lbs 24yrs

    Now do you's understand why i want to do the 150's or anything to beat him outright. There going to look at my weight.

    Not a knock, putdown, insult, etc....you simply cannot make that big of a jump in a matter of weeks. There is a reason why many gyms do not even have 150's (they tend to get dusty).

    If you are already doing 105's for 4 sets of 8 i think you are pretty close to 150's as it is..

    Honestly I wish you all the luck dirtpool, but doing the 105's and putting up the 150's is going to be a big jump, especially the kickup. Just from my own experiance ive done 105's pretty easy, but I dont think I could have ever gotten the 150's up. But anyways man, hopefully you do well, and bring home the cash. Good luck.
