I had a DEXA scan today to measure by body fat %

I had a DEXA scan today and my body fat is 16.5%

I posted last month about my Bod Pod test that said my body fat was 21.5% which I thought was too high. Since then I lost 4 lbs though but I don't think this accounts to the high % reported by the Bod Pod.

Ironically, according to the skinfold caliper I'm 11.7%

Doesn't the dexa scan also differentiate between your actual muscle mass vs bones, organs, etc.

What was your muscle vs LBM ratio.

Yes it does. It measures bone + fat + lean body mass

My lean body mass is the same as what the Bod Pod reported but my fat is 8 lbs less.

Oh, so it doesn't tell you how much muscle you have, just your bone? I gotcha.

Does it tell you in lbs how much bone you have in lbs though? If so, can you give me the numbers or scan your body comp thingy. I am just curious to see what ratios other people have

Man, you're so lucky! How much was it? I'm getting into the Bod Pod on Friday, we have one at my university. I may also get a skinfold to compare.

FYI the place near me charges $99 for one, or $169 for two (3 months apart).

It's more expensive than a bod pod test for sure. I've never gotten one... no point right now.

The Bod Pod doesn't take into account my bone density. My body mass was reported exactly the same on the Bod Pod and DEXA so I guess the Bod Pod over estimated my body fat.

What surprised me is that, according to DEXA, my right arm is leaner than my left one but my right leg is fatter than the left one. Go figure. My trunk has the higherst body fat (17%), I guess it's in my belly and chest.

I think it's important to know your body fat % professionally. My buddies (who don't work out) think I'm nuts because I really want to know my exact body fat %. They think I should just lose the weight blindly. I told them "would you run a marathon without knowing how much distance you got left to reach the end?" That's the same thing with losing weight... the end point for me is reaching 10% body fat. The good news is that, according to DEXA, I have much less fat pounds to lose than what the Bod Pod said. After I reach 10% I'll concentrate on building lean muscle slowly but surely.

Just got a DEXA scan done here for a cocoa/protein study I am taking part in at Penn State. Since I am in the study it is free which is awesome. They show you a picture of your bones, muscle, and fat, its pretty neat. It gives you the result of both arms, trunk, both legs, and head. My total body fat was 18.1%, which I can thank to my legs being the fattest part of my body. My accu measure skinfold caliper I use gave me a 14% reading consistently.

dexa is far and away the best measure of bodyfat, it also shows where fat is stored, IM, sub-q, interperitoneal, etc. which can be highly relevant.

I would love to get one of those tests done. I've heard that the Bod Pod still makes certain assumptions about bone density and what not, whereas the DEXA doesn't. Very cool. Does anyone know a place in NYC that does it?

By the way, would you mind posting some pictures? It'd be great to see what an accurate 16% BF looks like for all the people on here who are always asking for guesses/opinions.

    x2. DEXA-certified pics would be the end-all.

Major hospitals in NYC who have bone density labs should have a DEXA body scanner.

I'm writing to follow up on last year's post. I had another DEXA scan today. Since the last test I lost 11 lbs but according to the DEXA scan my body fat has only decreased by 0.7%. It's now 15.8%.

Apparently I lost about 6 lbs of lean mass. I'm really disappointed with the results because I thought my body fat is now about 12%. I lost 22 lbs overall since I started dieting/cardio more than a year ago.

Most of the remaining fat is in my trunk. I kind of knew that because I still have fat in my chest and a little love handles.

Below is a comparison of my result. I don't know how accurate it is because the scan was done on a different machine this time because I recently moved to another area. Anyway, please let me know what you guys think:

Lots of Universities have them in the exercise science lab. You can probably contact the exercise science dept. at any university to find out about studies that they are doing. You'll get the DEXA scan for free for participating. You might also get some free supplements or energy drinks, depending on what they are studying.

Let's say I lose 6-8 more pounds, will that be coming off my chest and abs? According to the DEXA scan my body fat there is 17.4%. I really don't want to lose more fat from my legs and glutes because it wouldn't look good. So far most of the fat loss was in my face, arms and legs.

That's the same thing with losing weight... the end point for me is reaching 10% body fat. The good news is that, according to DEXA, I have much less fat pounds to lose than what the Bod Pod said. After I reach 10% I'll concentrate on building lean muscle slowly but surely.
I think your buddies have the right idea. If you're fat and think you need to lose fat then lose fat. The exact percentage of fat is irrelevant if you don't like the way you look and want to decrease body fat. If you want to change something then change it. Pretty cool though that you had an accurate test done though. I myself wouldn't pay that money to get it done, I'm fat so I'll just keep losing fat until I think I'm lean enough.

I'd be willing to say that 95% of people on this forum accomplish nothing in years, don't be one of those people. It's sad, they seem to have the knowledge many don't but can't utilize it.

My work medical benefits paid 90% of the cost. It's considered a diagnostic x-ray test.

Sorry man I don't post photos. But to give you an idea: under certain lights i can see my abs from the top but it's very subtle. I still got fat in my lower chest and lower abs. My trunk got 17.4% body fat. My arms got around 9% body fat only so I can easily see the lateral head of my triceps.

That's of no help haha. People want to see what a true percentage of BF is. =/

    Hey guys,

Just managed to find this thread by accident.
I had a DEXA scan just a couple of days ago, $60 AUD so about $40 USD.

My reading was 14.8% body fat, which was higher than I thought it would be, as my previous result was 17.5% and I thought I dropped quite a bit of fat.

Anyway, here are some pics to let you know what 15% body fat really looks like (15% are the after pics on the right).
Some people really underestimate their fat levels.
Getting below 8% would be extremely difficult.

Almost makes you rethink the whole percentages. I think everyone on here would of thought that was 10 to 12 percent. For me, it isn't the number, it's the look I'm after.

I'm wondering if we have all been off for a long time or is DEXA slightly high on the average it computes?
