    Tilapia (fish) from Sams Club?

The tilapia from Sams is imported from China.

    Is this good?

I saw a show on tv about all the pollution and quality of fish from china.

Anyone eat it or know if it is good for you.

    Probably healthier than their toys.

I have no idea, but I'd eat it unless I read something reasonable to the contrary.

Are they wild or farm raised?

I get a lot of wild frozen fish 'product of Indonesia', frozen on those big fishing factory ships I assume. Who knows what waters they actually come from.

Are tilapia the fish that get fed 'crap' anyway? If so, how much worse can the feed be in China than anywhere else?

They are farm raised, that's what worries me.

I'd be more worried about wild.

The only fish I know that is not so good farm raised is Salmon and even that may be exaggerated a little.

But I could be wrong. Still I think I would have read something about tilapia if there was a major issue. I eat a lot of fish and try to read up as much as possible on sources, contaminants etc..

I'll assume the next show you watched didn't mention anything about FDA regulations regarding imported food? Or Wal-Mart's (aka Sam's Club) own guidelines? Just because they're inexpensive doesn't mean they're dumb - the last thing they want is several thousand customers suing them over contaminated food.....

Although in researching this a bit while I typed I found the following website dealing with Wal-Mart's "food safety" practices:

    http://walmartwatch.com/img/blog/consumer_safety.pdf

I guess I shouldn't make assumptions in the future. In any case, I eat frozen Tilapia on a regular basis - though mine is from Winn-Dixie, it still says "PRODUCT OF CHINA" on the packaging... and I'm still around.

Unless the fish are actually contaminated with bacteria and could make me sick - or with chemical toxins (mercury, PCB's DDT etc..), this 'fact' does not bother me at all.

If the fish are toxin free, and cheap, they can feed and let them swim them whatever they like as far as I am concerned. It's the wild fish that live and feed near industrial plans or other polluted waters and the like I'm more concerned about. Compared to that, swimming in animal waste is positively clean and healthy.

In a way not much different than organic veg where manure is used as a fertilizer.

OT: I'll bet you can find a lot of anti Wall mart stuff on the net. They are not exactly the most popular company around!

That's the thing, so much conflicting reports.
