If you want to be cheap then looking for used is the way to go. In the photo above you can see one of my prostar bumper racks. i got 3 for $100 and sold the 3rd for $80..kind of hard to beat. only problem with this style is that it leaves indentations on the plates where they sit on the metal. it doesn't bother me (probably because i don't have much in the way of bumpers anymore).
You could buy a saw and some lumber for pretty cheap. or you could do what i did and just troll craigslist. the Titan ones seem decent enough, but i've never paid more than $35 for a weight tree, so that still seems expensive to me.

you guys werent kidding. carrying one of these 4x6 horse stall mats was interesting. But it is sturdy as hell.
had no idea what plywood to get so i just went with the more expensive one i could find (Blondewood). Seems really solid. All this on top of my carpet and neither the mats nor the wood moves at all.
Hmm i see okay. thanks. im going to shop around a bit

Mine were really bad when I brought them home, no way could I have put them in the house. I scrubbed both sides with Simple Green using a deck brush and left them out in the sun for a week, flipping them every couple days. Then I wiped them down again with a rag and brought them in.
They still smell when I'm in the room, and a bit more after a workout, presumably because walking around on them releases more smell. But after a couple months they aren't too bad and you don't smell them outside the workout room, even with the door left open.
Also I'm not sure what the other side of those mats look like, but you may want to consider flipping them so the texture is down. That provides a bit of air movement underneath which will help prevent mold.Last edited by bisonp; 11-14-2017 at 06:42 AM.

When I had stall mats the smell was pretty strong for a few weeks then still noticeable but much less. It was in my garage so it wasn't an issue but I'll say that I got to the point where I enjoyed the smell since I associated it with working out. I actually missed it when it dissipated.
But the only time I dealt with the smell was when working out. I imagine it is much different if it's in the house{5'7" and under #1}

Yeah, i have an air freshener in my apartment but i may need to add 3 more D:
these ones were stored outside but they were on top of the pile, leading me to believe they werent out there for very long
ive tried Simple Green, Cleaning vinegar, and the Amazing! degreaser. Nothing seems to get rid of the smell Lol and its been 2 weeks. I might try flipping it over this weekend and trying to air it out

Honestly I think the sun (and some rain) probably did more than the Simple Green. My mats had a bit of of a shiny film/coating on them that squeaked when walked on. One mat I only left out a couple days and that was still on there, where as it was not on the ones left out longer. It's worn off now.
They are recycled rubber, and even ones at the same stores change with different brands and textures, so I don't know if there's a foolproof way to mitigate the smell. I'd assume there's a lot of variation in the composition.

I posted these in the home vs commercial gym thread, latest pics. Table in the front is where I have been refurbing plates and my bar. Door to the right in the garage portion is where the inside area is with pulldown etc. I really want to add a cable crossover in the garage. Eventually.

I've been down this road twice. I had 4 stall mats in my basement before - they reeked and you could hardly sit outside on the porch with them there. I got them to the point with sun and SimpleGreen that even putting your nose to one had virtually no smell (this took some time too).
I'm now sitting on 16ish of them in an 18x18 room. Same treatment but so many enclosed and the room smells a bit like rubber but not too bad. Before I pulled them out and treated them the entire bottom floor of the house stunk and with open basement door it would have made it's way up no doubt. Honestly, if they didn't come with the house I'd have gone rolled rubber. After the PITA of moving/treating them during the move I wish I'd have sold them and put in rolled rubber. It's fine today but it was a lot of work at a time I had no capacity for it.
Good luck!Last edited by C123C; 11-21-2017 at 04:34 AM.

Eric,
How do you like that plate loaded lat/low row Legend piece? Oops, never mind. I see it's the selectorized version and not the plate loaded version.
Love your gym though. Every time you mention it as a garage, I always take a double look. The t-bar ceiling throws me off.You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.

Picked up a Hammer Strength AMSAB bench off of CL yesterday. In pristine condition and super cheap! Some guy had this for his girlfriend inside of their apartment (using pink dumbbells). The last thing I expected to see when buying a Hammer Strength bench.
It's a tank. Feels to weigh 100lbs or so empty

I just picked up the Legend plate load recently. Love it, really great. Pulleys and cables are same as selectorized and a really decent plate carriage. Very smooth. Low pulley is very accessible - important to me for work other than rows and limited on some units (like the Rogue selectorized where the pulley is tucked under the seat without a lot of clearance). Now you pay for that too in that it takes up more room than other units. Powertec has the right idea where the seat swings out of the way (plus you can do stack and/or plates) - not as solid a unit but I'd have likely gone this way except that for tall people with long arms it's not big enough. End of the day the Legend was available and roughly $450. No regrets whatsoever.

I'm assuming you were able to score that deal on the used market, yes? I think Legend lists the plate loaded version at $1350, which is still reasonable, compared to a selectorized unit. Once I get serious about it, I think I'll be contacting a used equipment reseller here. From some of their list prices, there's not much discounted from new, but discounted none the less.
It's on my list of additions to my gym. (Lat/low row). Doesn't necessarily need to be Legend, but that would also be nice to have matching manufacturers in there.Last edited by litljay; 11-22-2017 at 08:36 AM.
