I have a question and need some advice. I just got this combo bench and im wondering how much weight i can put on. the owners manual says to put no more than 100 pounds on the bar bell. is it because the barbell cant take it(barbell weighs 10 pounds) or because the bench itself cannot withstand the weight. Does anyone know how high i can acutally go with it? when i put 100 pounds on the bar it doesnt bend at all so i assume it can take more. i also tried putting 100 pounds on the bar and sitting on the barbell itself. it held me fine. soo idk.

some pics of the home gym, almost done (I hope) found a lot on craigslist, I was looking for a lat pull down and found the powertec smith machine with lat pull down for $275 so I grabbed that.
I'd like to upgrade to a commercial rack but most are too tall for the ceiling maybe when I move out.
still looking for a few things
- flat bench that is 17in tall 12in wide
- a full dumbbell set

My garage
I got everything I need in my garage. It's not a huge setup but it gets the job done and didn't break my bank.

I don't have the best camera (it's my phone), so it's really difficult to get a good wide shot here. But here's my setup. All I need to get is the low/high pulley attachment for my power cage, an olympic ez bar, and sixteen 10lb plates so I can do 83.5lb presses maxed out with my spindle lock dumbbells.
I know the space isn't much, but it works: I can do everything I need to right there. As far as the carpeting goes, I do have some basic flooring (it's cheap stuff and just slightly an improvement when placed over the carpet... something like a $30 7' x 7' jigsaw cheap workout mats from Canadian Tire I got for free), but again, things work out alright. I'm a college student so I don't have too many options for space.
Pictures:
Listing it all off:
Bars:
- 45lb Olympic Barbell (600lb limit, fairly basic)
- 5 foot spindle-lock 1-inch fitting barbell
Dumbbells:
- 50lb adjustable Powerblock dumbbells (u90 stage 1)
- 2x spindle-lock dumbbells with rubber grip
- 2x 25lb cast iron dumbbells
- 2x 5lb, 3lb, and 2lb dumbbells
Olympic Plates:
- 2x 45lb
- 2x 25lb
- 4x 10lb
- 4x 5lb
- 4x 2.5lb
1-inch Plates:
- 4x 5lb
- 4x 2.5lb
- 4x 1.25lb
Other:
- 1x Pair of Olympic Jaw-lock collars (sitting on bench in pic) // love these things compared to crappy coil ones
- 1x close-grip row attachment for cable exercises
- 1x Hoist 4165 Bench
- 1x Leg extension/curl attachment for bench
- 1x Powertec Power Rack (2010/2011 model)
- 2x ab rollers
- 1x perfect pushups
- 6x cheap mat squares (only put out three so far)
- 1x 65cm exercise ball
- 1x additional hallway pullup bar
- 1x skip rope
- 1x exercise/resistance tubing for all that p90x and whatnot stuff
- 1x door attachment for the tubing
- 1x pair of wrist wraps
- not exactly part of the gym, but for cardio I ride a Cannondale Quick CX4 bikeLast edited by PaulWog; 09-27-2011 at 10:33 AM.

Nice setup. Is that the PowerTec Roller Smith? I have an older model PT smith machine with the lat pulldown tower. I've since removed the pulldown attachment and just use the smith but hate it. It's narrow between the guide rods so my elbows will hit them when doing pressing movements unless I'm very careful and it tends to bind up with heavier weights when trying to rotate the bar to lock or unlock it. There are no bearings, its just metal on metal and all the axle grease in the world doesn't make it any smoother to rotate. That looks a little wider than mine. $275 is a great price especially if they've upgraded the smith."It is my own fault for replying in a smith thread." deadwoodgregg

Thanks, yea it is a powertec roller smith. I think it's a different design from the one you're describing. It's about 50in wide, wider than the power rack, and it slides on linear bearings. I don't really use it tho sometimes for shrugs but I mainly got it for the lat pull down. I think there's a newer design now that has the same pull-up bars from the power rack.

thanks, the floors are laminated pergo, they seem hold fine and protect the floor, I don't drop weights other than with deadlifts. All of it is 3/8" thick except the two 3/4" horse mats under the leg press and reverse hyper. I'd like to upgrade to horse mats everywhere, they are definitely tougher and easier to clean.

I'm not sure what the deal with the photos is, they were each about 1mb when I uploaded them and now they're around 100kb. Here's a thread for my gym project with high res photos. Like I said, there are a few more things in the works.

The old forum software used to limit you to images that were 1000x1000 pixels. The new forum software has no such restrictions, but if they're too big it scales them for you and, apparently, not always in the most pleasing way.
I've been scaling the photos that I upload to be no more than 1000 pixels high or wide. Seems to have worked out pretty well so far. See here for an example of stuff that I've uploaded somewhat recently. I did a spot check of a few of the photos posted to that thread and the file sizes are the same as my local copies.

Nice stuff Looks like a pleasant space to work out in. Is that a garage area?
Believe me, my pics don't make your gym look like crap Hahaha. I'm jealous of the space you have to work with. I have to build a murphy bed setup so I can give myself even slightly enough room.

You're an Olympic platform and multi-angle cable system from having the exact gym I am aiming for. Great equipment selections.
I posted my stuff about two years ago (squat rack, high/low cable, IronMaster bench, IronMaster DB's - just the basics), but I'm making the move with the soon-to-be fiancee to Houston at the end of December. She's 110% gung-ho about building a complete beast of a home gym setup in the basement of whatever house we end up in. I'm extremely excited about it.Photo Log: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=140023453 (with pics of me in my underwear!!!)

I finally found a good deal on a leg press/hack squat machine. I just picked this up this morning and got it put together. It's a Parabody "Serious Steel" leg press/hack squat. I'm assuming this is an older model since I don't think they still label their equipment with Serious Steel, and after putting that thing together by myself I'm took lazy to google it. But it's been well maintained and the seller said not used much. I got it for $250 and it was less than a 1/2 hour from me so I'm quite pleased. Legs aren't up again until Wednesday but I'm looking forward to leg day for a change. I'm posting my PowerTec Compact Leg Press and PowerTec Leverage Squat Machine today on Craigs List today. I don't see myself ever using either of them now that I have a "real" leg press. The gym is almost done. All I need are four more sets of hundred pound plates, a Body Solid Series 7 smith machine, a selectorized lat pulldown/low row machine, a selectorized cable crossover or functional gym, some heavier dumbbells...etc
The pic is from the seller's CL add. I took a bunch of pics but they were too large to upload. Some other time."It is my own fault for replying in a smith thread." deadwoodgregg
