    500 LBS Bench Press

How many people in America and Canada (or the rest of the world for that matter) have a 500 lbs bench press (without a shirt)??????

Does anyone have any estimate as to how many??????
I'm guessing its under a thousand but I could be wrong.

Also does anyone believe it could be attained naturally without steroids????

    IMHO it cannot.

    Opinions please...............

I know Lenny Mclean was able to bench 500lb, and I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have used a shirt, as they weren't really around back then. And he didn't use steroids. (well once)

It's just a question of years and years of consistent, effective training. With good genetics it is definitely doable, with really ****ty genetics... possibly still doable if you train right and eat well. Over 400 is at least doable.

I have never seen anyone do it in person, and I live in Toronto which has 5 million people.
The most I've ever seen is a 440 lbs bench press

I've seen plenty of 500+ benches at meets. I know a guy who is in his 50's that can do 500+ as a 181. He's got arms so short the bar has to be handed DOWN to him, and with a good arch, his stroke is a matter of inches.

If you notice I am wearing a tank top in the vid...its raw. I have maxed out at 665 touch and go raw. I have done 805 (gym lift) in a shirt, but am working on correcting my ****ty shirt technique.

I weigh 330, but was 8lbs lighter in that vid because I wasn't able to eat anything but cereal over thanksgiving break (I'm a poor college student).

I have to hit that weight in a meet first, but then I will be in the top 20 or so. I think there has only been 19 people so far to do that much, but I could be wrong.

Nick, another question, how much, on average, do you find yourself going up each year????
I find I can add about 20 lbs a year on my bench and about 40 on my squat with proper nutrition and...ahum...other supplements.

    how about you??

Bench shirts act as extra tendon and give your muscles something to flex against, this gives extra spring off the bottom and provides the lifter with some protection from injury.

Some lifters can, with a proper bench press shirt, add 100 lbs on their bench.
Its a very tight shirt that allows you to lift more.

Some people feel its cheating and I suppose it kinda is but you still have to lift the weights

I was stuck at 600 for a long time (2years), but my girlfriend started forcing me to eat more and I started training at WSB this August and my bench has been skyrocketing. Before last sept ('04) I wasn't even really powerlifting, I just saw what some of the records were and thought I could break them, so I did. Now it is something I am focusing on.
