Is hitting a boxing bag good cardio?

Well basically the only form of cardio I can do right now is hitting the heavy bag. Is this good cardio? How much will I have to do every week to see results?

Hell yes. It's a great form of HIIT. Hit the bag for 2 minutes, jump rope for 100 turns, 50 bodyweight squats, hit bag for 2 minutes, etc. Create circuit training routines with it, the possibilities are endless.

well, if you can hit it at full speed with full strength and not hurt yourself, then you dont need gloves.

but come on, pros use gloves for a reason, and its not to make their punches hurt less. safety first...

I used to do it and it was really hard on my wrists when I tried to do it without gloves. I would use gloves.

hittting the heavy bag IMO is one the best and most fun options for cardio (and stress).

YES, get some decent gloves and make sure to get wraps too. they will provide the support for hands/wrists. until you get a "boxers break" you don't realize how easy it to one. its basically a break in the bone on the outside bone of your hand. it is very easy to break, i broke a few yrs ago riding a 4 wheeler on a slippery, narrow hill climb, when my atv slide off to the side and i it a sappling tree.

Wraps are super important, all most as important as the gloves.

Just make sure you are disciplined enough to get a good cardio workout,

I agree with all the posts above, it is a great workout if you decide to make a workout of it.

I have worked out with some of my friends with their heavy bags and they hit it for three minutes and then dance around the bag...

i dare you to throw jabs, hooks, and maui thai knees at a heavy bag for 20 min the way you would bike or run for 20 min, it cant be done. (not unless you can bike for hour+) it is soooooo heavy on your heart because the amount of muscles having blood pumped to them, it is epic as well as it will help you defend yourself better should you ever be in a fight. and not getting the crap nocked out of you is very alpha.

If you dont want your knuckles to get all torn up its prob a guy idea to wear gloves. If you dont mind them getting torn up it will toughen up your hands which can be a good thing.

NEVER hit the bag without gloves!!!! It is so easy to break bones in your hand along with tearing the skin. When u tear the skin you wont be hitting it for a while. Also, u really should never be hitting a heavy bag at full power esp without raps, take it slow and work on your form, Form is most Important!!!

you can hit a bag with out gloves but dont start that way.

there is a process known as calcification that makes fighters bones stronger and stronger as the years go. i practiced 4 styles of martial arts for 12 years before my back injury and have gone from feeling a bit of pain from no gloves bag training to full hard body training on banana trees for kicks and wrapped on a phone book taped to a brick wall for fists.

go to google video (video.google.com) and search for "Bas Rutten Free" and you will find a seven part video for free on the net on the basics of MMA fighting, the first, second, and i think seventh videos are the striking videos and teach great form (the form of the three time king of pancrase and first ever middle heavy weight to become the undefeated UFC heavy weight champion)

Coming in to second everybody that said don't hit the bag without gloves, at this stage of the game you'll 100% break a small bone in your hands.

Wraps are cheap and decent gloves for just that can be had for around 40-60 bucks, ease in on your punches at first and make sure you hit then move instead of just flailing and you'll get an extremely good workout.
