as the title asks, what would be more beneficial?
as of now, i do evening workouts, a hour or a hour and a half before i go to sleep. the reason im asking is that i drink a 600 calorie protein shake after my workout, and im wondering if i should take in less calories before i sleep. plus, half of the calories i eat in the day (around 1500) are within a hour of my workout, and with my workout being so close to my sleep time, im wondering if that would hinder my results. would a morning workout be more beneficial for me? that way, most of my calories would be in the morning, and any not burned off during the workout can be burned off during the day.
also, in terms of reps, do they make much of a difference? right now, im doing reps of 5-10. i know id burn more calories if i upped the reps to around 20-30, but would it make a NOTICEABLE difference? or are the calories burned by lifting negligible.
thanks in advance.

You're probably OK with the shake after a heavy evening workout, even before bed because the fast digesting shake will go right to helping recovery while you're sleeping instead of being burned for energy, or it gets stored as glycogen in the muscles because they're depleted and readily absorb the nutrients instead of letting it get stored as fat. At least that's the theory.
The calories of the shake do sound a little high but if you're using a scoop or two of whey plus maltodextrin or dextrose, it adds up and makes perfect sense. 50g protein and 100g maltodextrin or dextrose are not completely unreasonable amounts and that's 600 calories. Seems OK to me but don't be afraid to tweak it based on your results.
If the majority of your calories are right around your workout you really can't ask for anything better. That's when your body needs the nutrition the most, it burns more energy plus it needs excess nutrients for recovery then the rest of the day it's operating on a calorie deficit.
Just keep a log of your progress and see where it takes you, then adjust as needed.

1 scoop ON casein, 1 scoop isopure whey, 2 teaspoons of peanut butter, and 2-3 cups of milk = 600 calories. i dont drink it all at once - i sip it over a period of 30 minutes or so. i only drink it with so many calories casue its really hard for me to get healthy food, and im trying to stay as clean as possible. besides protien shakes i live off granola, and id rather get my calories from protien then carbs.
i was wondering about the reps casue 5x5 is great for building muscle, and it works really well. but i dont know how good it is for loosing fat. since the time your muscles are flexed is shorter, i would assume that the calories burned doing that workout is less. i dont really mind loosing a little muscle; the time it takes for me to gain muscle mass + strength is a lot shorter than the time it takes me to loose fat.

Some researchn has indicated that metabolic rate is elevated more when training in the evening. But at the end of the day, CONSISTENCY is going to make or break you.
Rep choice AND inter-set rest choice may make a difference. Lower reps and short rest periods lead to an increased EPOC. Reps that high for one single set (i.e. not part of a drop set or rest/pause) may not be the best option.Last edited by in10city; 01-01-2008 at 03:12 AM.

I would dro the casein and go with 2 scoops whey, drop the PB and add some carbs, some people like simple carbs PWO and other s complex, me.. ilike the complex so i had 1/2 cup oatmeal. You should only need 1 cup of milk, if it is too thick add some water
IMO...good luck bro!Just lift heavy a$$ weights and eat on dat healthy s**t!
