Are there any kinds of cheap canned protein sources like tuna but without the dangerous mercury?

not canned but packets...
at a few krogers i've seen packets of shrimps, crab, oysters, and other crustaceans-- they're kinda expensive, though...
i think there are only certain (see the post above re. white albacore) tunas that are causing the whole mercury scare. you could probably look on the audobon society's website and find out which ones they are, and then just don't buy those types...
if you're having a meal with carbs, maybe you could try canned black beans and packaged brown rice (trader joes makes pre-cooked brown rice packs that are pretty cheap). black beans are pretty high in protein, and when combined with brown rice i hear they make a "complete" protein, so that could be a cheap and portable source.http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=109800291
