I majored and graduated in chemical engineering.
I will tell you that pretty much all engineering majors are BOOMING right now for job opportunities.
The chem engineers that just graduated are making about as much as I make (with 3.5 years experience).
Incredible starting salaries - plenty of room to grow also.
I don't see a downturn within hiring for engineers in a while - soooooo many engineers are within 5 years of retiring.
Companies realize they need to train folks up to make them competent enough to fill in for the grey beards in industry.
My general advice is do take your GPA seriously.
Employers look hard at it - and it's really the only way to compare a kid from a Big 10 school with a kid from the Big 12 or SEC.
All the extracurricular stuff is great - but GPA is apples to apples for interviewees.
Enjoy it though - best 4 years of your life.RIP Dad

you had to be "that guy" to post "search for this advice".. if i searched for "this advice" would i be participating in the conversation? or would i be on the outside looking in at everyone else? yes this personalizes the topic, i agree it has been done before, and trust me ive read most of them.. starting a new topic is bound to bring out new insights and inspirations

I second the Engineering motion. It is hard work but unless you are a total **** up, you will find a job. Even my friends getting 2.5 GPAs are getting jobs. It is booming right now. Of course, you have to love math and physics. If not, then it will be tough love when you have 15-18 credits of them a semester.
If you can't hack engineering, switch out. No shame in it. If you are struggling through Calculus III, Classical Physics, etc., then leave. You may hate it when you are taking it but two years later, you'd give your left nut to have classes as easy as those.
If you're not going the engineering route, then see what the other majors have to offer. Keep in mind that college, you receive an education but it is in your best interest to receive an education that will result in a job when you snag your diploma. You do hear of people who get an English degree that work in some unrelated field but there are many of those that end up being a manager of electronics at a Target.
I know a lot of people will tell you college is drunken orgy. It is but you get out of your education what you put into it. The dudes that party night and day will flunk out or be in an out of academic probation, get their diploma, and then end up working alongside high school grads at some go-nowhere job.
You will find that everyone goes to college thinking they are going to be ****ing awesome but then turn out to be lazy bums that can't get their hands off the PlayStation controller and the bottle of Jack. They drink and go to parties before school starts, they keep doing it because the first 2-3 weeks are easy as ****, and then once the assignments and exams come up, they find themselves struggling to make the class average. So don't hit up parties all the time, thinking that you can party and drink constantly and get decent grades. You won't. If you do, either your major is garbage or you are a ****ing genius.
