I second that, though if you are planning on reading your first Ayn Rand book I would start with "The Fountainhead," not quite as intense.

"The Bell Jar" Sylvia Plath and
"Memoirs of a Geisha" Arthur Golden are both good quick reads
Also, "Catch me if you Can," you probably saw the movie, but the book is a good easy read and it is amazing how smart he was!

"The Bonfire of the Vanities" Tom Wolfe

I love books (even though I haven't had much of a chance to read lately)
Here are some of my faves off the top of my head:
~White Oleander- Janet Fitch (i read this before the movie/it is much better)
    ~On The Road- Jack Kerouac
~Suzanne's Diary For Nicholas-James Patterson (i am a huge James Patterson fan and this book is just incredible but so different from all his other novel's)
~The Tao of Pooh and The Te of Piglet- Benjamin Hoff (this book changed my life)
    ~Walden- Henry Thoreau
~the Green Mile- Stephen King (books/movie both pretty great)

    not in a particular order:

the tin drum by gunter grass
everything and anything by charles bukowski - huge fan!
dr. zhivago by whatsisname (sorry can't remember something with parsley)

and many others although i'd rather read books about
psychology, science, religion etc. - the real world has so much to offer

Call me juvenile, but my favorites are "Call It Courage" and "Jonathon Livingston Seagull." They may not qualify as novels, but I've loved them since I read.
My grown-up side likes "Tale of Two Cities" and "Pride and Prejudice".

    Oh gosh.....

Love history, fantasy, science fiction, classics, horror/suspense and more. Just an avid reader since an early age.

    Discovered Mary Gentle's "Ash" series.

Read most of Ayn Rand's books including her compilations.

Eric Hoffer's "The True Believer" (nonfiction) I recommend this one to anyone wanting to understand what a "fanatic" is and why. First published in 1951 and still current.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by HST
Nine Stories by JD Salinger (okay, not a novel, but still!)

Yes, before anyone asks, I'm a lit geek

    Bostonbootgirl,

I find myself far more attracted to Buk's poetry than to his fiction, though I have read Ham on Rye and deem it worthy of a read.

Anything by Margaret Atwood ("The Handmaid's Tale" is excellent)

"The Bell Jar" Sylvia Plath (Love her poetry too - SprinterJ, have you seen the movie Sylvia? I liked it)

"The Corrections" by Jonathan Franzen (I love that book too Emmie, btw you have great taste in literature!).

Chuck Palahniuk's novels are all great

Bret Easton Ellis especially "American Psycho".

Also for a trashy read, I cannot help but love Stephen King.

Hard to name a favorite because I like so many different styles....

One of my favorites however is "Wicked" by Gregory Maguire. He puts a twist and a different perspective on the classic Wizard of Oz. The story is told from the view of the Wicked Witch of the West. It's a light read, but definitely has plenty of meaning to it.
