Green tea is great for you but it also may lower testosterone, so may be something you want to add in a testosterone boosting supplement to counter act.

    Abstract

This study investigated the acute effects of green tea extract (GTE) and its polyphenol constituents, (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) and (-)-epicatechin (EC), on basal and stimulated testosterone production by rat Leydig cells in vitro. Leydig cells purified in a Percoll gradient were incubated for 3 h with GTE, EGCG or EC and the testosterone precursor androstenedione, in the presence or absence of either protein kinase A (PKA) or protein kinase C (PKC) activators. The reversibility of the effect was studied by pretreating cells for 15 min with GTE or EGCG, allowing them to recover for 1 h and challenging them for 2 h with human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH), 22(R)-hydroxycholesterol or androstenedione. GTE and EGCG, but not EC, inhibited both basal and kinase-stimulated testosterone production. Under the pretreatment conditions, the inhibitory effect of the higher concentration of GTE/EGCG on hCG/LHRH-stimulated or 22(R)-hydroxycholesterol-induced testosterone production was maintained, whereas androstenedione-supported testosterone production returned to control levels. At the lower concentration of GTE/EGCG, the inhibitory effect of these polyphenols on 22(R)-hydroxycholesterol-supported testosterone production was reversed. The inhibitory effects of GTE may be explained by the action of its principal component, EGCG, and the presence of a gallate group in its structure seems important for its high efficacy in inhibiting testosterone production. The mechanisms underlying the effects of GTE and EGCG involve the inhibition of the PKA/PKC signalling pathways, as well as the inhibition of P450 side-chain cleavage enzyme and 17beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase function..

New research from Hong Kong found that green tea, one of the most popular drinks around the world, may benefit bone health and the researchers suggest it has the potential to help prevent and treat osteoporosis and other bone diseases suffered by millions of people worldwide.

The study was the work of Dr Ping Chung Leung and colleagues from the Institute of Chinese Medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and you can read about it in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry where a web version appeared last month.

Other studies have already suggested that chemicals in green tea benefit health in many ways, for example by preventing cancer and heart disease, but this is the first study to pinpoint which of those chemicals may also improve bone health by stimulating formation and slowing the breakdown of bone.

In humans, as in many organisms, bone is not a dead tissue but a living dynamic metabolic system that relies on a delicately maintained balance between bone formation and bone resorption. Cells called osteoblasts make bone while cells called osteoclasts resorb it.

For the study, the researchers exposed a group of cultured rat osteoblast-like cells to three catechin chemicals for several days. The chemicals were epigallocatechin (EGC), gallocatechin (GC), and gallocatechin gallate (GCG), all main components of green tea.

They found that one catechin in particular, EGC, stimulated the action of a key enzyme that promotes bone growth by up to 79 per cent.

The effect of boosting EGC also increased the level of bone mineralization in the cells, which strengthens bones.

They also found that EGC weakened the activity of osteoclasts, tipping the delicate bone metabolism balance away from resorption to formation.

The researchers also noted that the catechins did not appear to cause toxic effects in the bone cells.

They concluded that these findings showed:

"That the tea catechins, EGC in particular, had positive effects on bone metabolism through a double process of promoting osteoblastic activity and inhibiting osteoclast differentiations."

Osteoporosis is a condition where the density and quality of bone is reduced, increasing the risk of fracture.

According to the International Osteoporosis Foundation, for the year 2000, there were an estimated 9 million new osteoporotic fractures worldwide, of which 1.6 million were at the hip, 1.7 million were at the forearm and 1.4 million were clinical vertebral fractures.

Europe and the Americas accounted for just over half of all these fractures, while most of the remainder were in the Western Pacific region and Southeast Asia.

Although usually affecting women more often than men, in China there is a higher incidence of hip fractures in men than women.

I have always known that green tea has a lot of benefits to our health and body, that is why for the pasy five years now I have been drinking green tea instead of coffee.

But I don't think all the 25 reasons listed above are scientific at all. Most of them are just based on doggy facts. Nevertheless, given that green tea does have other scientifically proven health benefits, i guess what the hell.

    Thanks for the info though.

This is interesting... I do that myself..
But i was wondering how the nutritions reacts when the tea is made out of cold water instead of boiling/hot water? Is there still the same health benefits? Does anything even change?

And also, can you drink too much of this stuff? I love how fresh cold green tea is when you drink it and i would like to replace water with this.. Which basically means when working out, in school, at home.. Even on the night table.. Good/bad idea?

    Any thoughts?

Yeah I tried to do the green tea thing for a while, just for its immune system benefits. But it's so bitter, I can't stand it. Might try the teaspoon of honey with it, and the iced green tea idea.

I bought some today and it tastes sweet. Doesn't list sugar though. I like it better than regular sweet tea. Mines just the instant green tea. I pour a glass of fresh water and put a scoop of it in and stir it. I bought some green tea bags too.

If you’re a bodybuilder looking for an edge in the gym, you may want to consider the use of green tea. It delivers a wealth of positive factors, including improvements to fat loss, immune system function, energy, and health. Here are a few reasons it may be of benefit to your health as well as your bodybuilding progress.

    Increased Performance

Green tea causes an immediate boost in the metabolism. It also increases the metabolic rate at which carbohydrates are used by the body. In other words, your body burns carb calories more efficiently. Especially when dieting, this can be highly helpful!

    Fat Fighting

Green tea contains compounds known as catechins which assist in creating a natural thermogenic effect in the body, as well as preventing fat deposit buildups in the first place. In studies, patients experienced a very moderate, but very common fat loss of 3 to 5 pounds. It’s nothing monumental, but certainly every bodybuilder would welcome a loss of 3 to 5 pounds of fat!

    Immune System

Green tea boosts the immune system function. As a bodybuilder, you already suppress your immune system in a major way several times each week by subjecting your body to intense workouts. Despite their healthy eating habits and rigorous exercise patterns, bodybuilders are often sick more than their sedentary counterparts who can’t tell a gym from a gyro sandwich. Green tea, along with vitamin C and E, can help reduce the impact made upon the immune system function.

    Caffeine

Used by 90% of the population, caffeine is a terrific supplement for added energy, performance, and circulation in the gym. Green tea contains it, and bodybuilders love it. If you’re a bodybuilder seeking an edge, look into green tea as an alternative to the yellow caffeine pills. You’ll experience the same energy boost, and you may still develop the common addiction to caffeine that most see, but you’ll be bringing a lot of great factors into play in your body that caffeine alone does not bring.

    Anti-oxidants

Green tea does contain anti-oxidants. These can be invaluable to the bodybuilder. When you lift weights, you tear muscle fibers on the molecular level, causing them to release toxins into your body. Among these are free radicals. These agents cause cell damage, which leads to both soreness and growth, and well as cell permutations, which can lead to cancers. Drinking green tea can help you recover faster from your workout, and will slightly lessen your chances of developing cancer. Given the variety of unknown substances bodybuilders put into their body (including AAS), any anti-oxidant you can get is greatly useful!

You’ll want to keep an eye on your oval caffeine intake when supplementing with green tea. After all, you wouldn’t want to drink three cups of coffee, pop a “Vivarin” for 200 mg of caffeine, then enter the gym. You’d be a sweaty, jittery mess, and your blood pressure would be skyrocketing as well! Give green tea a shot if you’re looking to give your bodybuilding training, health, and recovery a shot in the arm!
