Going to do my first meet in 5 weeks. Going to fly overseas just to compete as there are none where I live..

Thanks for this thread helps me alot.

So anxious that I will bomb out lol.. lets hope not.

    Question:

Are you only allowed to warm up once in a lift?

So after warming up on the squats, you can't warm up again right?

for example, I do 315(opener) and I plan on doing 380(2nd attempt), am i allowed to go to the warm up room to warm up for the 380?

I don't think so though.. I mean if thats the case people would just start with 135, and go back to the warm up room for the second attempt.

    Just making sure.

Ya at my meet all the lifters wait back stage in the warmup room until their name is called. No one really warms up between attempts, because there wouldn't be enough time. Also, the weights are likely close enough together that you wouldn't need a warmup between them.
    1st Meet Results: May 14, 2016
    Bodyweight: 199.3 lbs
    259/187.4/330.7 Total: 777.1 lbs

    2nd Meet Results: October 15, 2016
    Bodyweight: 178.6 lbs

    Hi all,

I hope this is the place to post about my concerns for attempting my first powerlifting meet early next year. Namely that I am concerned about being embarrasingly weak in comparison to the average attendee, despite not being able to find out what I should be aiming to lift.

I've been lifting weights on and off for a number of years now, and my current lifts are as follows:

    Age: 24
    Height: 5' 8"
    Weight: 81KG/177lbs

    Bench: 82.5KG/181lbs for 5 reps (I have not attempted a 1RM)
    Squat: 120KG/264lbs for 5 reps (I have not attempted a 1RM)
Deadlift: 140KG/308lbs for 5 reps (my PR for 1 rep is 170KG/375lbs)

My 5 rep totals are therefore at 342.5KG/755lbs currently. This is without really concentrating on strength training or powerlifting and also I need to work on getting closer to ATG Squats to ensure my form is deep enough for competitions. Basically, I wanted to check whether or not I am in the right vicinity to start entering amateur competitions, where I should focus on improving and finally, what programmes (e.g. 5/3/1?) are recommended for beginner powerlifters.

    Thank you.

no need to worry about your strength level relative to others. So long as you can follow commands and complete the lifts to the federation's standards, there's no reason not to sign up for the closet meet

in terms of programs, id get on a standard linear progression plan.

Hey, great thread by the way. Lots of helpful information to new people who want to start powerlifting. But I have a question about the federations. There are just so many, how do I choose the right one? I live right outside of Philadelphia in New Jersey and can't seem to find too many meets that are fairly local. Most of them I see are a couple hours away. I also look at the results of the meets and see that there are people my age but 50 pounds heavier and lifting almost 100+ more pounds than me. Should I wait a little and get stronger before starting or just get into it? I know it's a dumb question but I'm new and I can't seem to find anything.

no reason to delay getting on the platform and setting an official total. Every meet you go to, there's a good chance someone will be stronger than you. You could be at the top of the weight class for 105kg, pushing a huge total but then a SHW in the same flight comes on and puts up even more monstrous numbers. No big deal. While powerlifting is a competitive sport, it's an individual sport in the sense that the only thing you have control over is your own success/strength.

From the meets that ive been in, ive seen few Teen 1/Teen 2/Juniors comprise a good percentage of the lifters. Jump into it ASAP and dont look back.

As far as picking a fed, find one that's close to you and just go for it. I would, however, take a good look at the rules and gear guidelines. Youtube is great for looking at how certain feds judge and structure their meets as well.

I have a quick question, I recently signed up for my first meet. In registration I was asked if I was a member of the federation, at the time I was not so I clicked no. I signed up for the federation afterwords though, will this cause a problem on meet day?

I was just wondering if you think my numbers are solid enough for a powerlifting meet.
    Stats:
    14 years old 145lbs
    Bench: 155
    Squat:250
    Deadlift:300

These are my numbers now but I expect them to increase quickly as I'm only 14

Here's what I learned from my first meet, some from my own experience and some from observation.

Practice the commands during your last few training sessions before the meet, and during your warmups. At my first meet I forgot to wait for the squat command on my first attempt.
Also, keep track of any schedule changes, one meet I went to changed the start time at the last minute, a good portion of the lifters in the first flight missed their first attempt.
Make sure you have the right equipment and gear. I was at a meet once when someone didn’t know they had to wear a singlet to compete. Make sure you have everything: singlet (of course) squat shoes, regulation underwear (I’m not kidding), long socks for deadlifting, and weight belt. There’s more, I think but that’s all I got off the top of my head.
Set your first attempts at challenging but doable weights, you don’t have to set a record or max out on your first attempt.
Most meets I’ve been to have been sorely lacking in food, and if you have special needs, be sure to bring your own. Also, it’s not a good idea to eat anything you haven’t had before, it may cause stomach upset or worse.
And don’t move furniture or anything heavy before a meet, believe it or not I know people who have done that. And if you are in a different city, skip the sightseeing until after, that I learned from my own experience.
Often judges have told me without prompting what I did if a lift was disqualified.
My first raw nationals I missed all my squats. I didn’t know any better, and kept competing, no one said a word. Of course, I did find out later that it meant I couldn’t get a medal. If they let you, I would keep going, the experience will be worth it.

Thanks so much for all of this info! I've signed up for my first meet in April and this helps a lot! I've been trying to look at past meet results to just see how I stack up, but can't seem to find much info. I'm a 45-year old SHW, so there doesn't seem to be many like me at the local meets. I'm not concerned, I just wanted to see what others were lifting. I'm really looking forward to competing! It's very local, so I have at least 6 friends who are all competing, too. It's going to be a rad day! Anyway, thanks a lot for the info.

Great video to show what it's like getting to the meet, weigh in, rack height checks, equipment inspections, warm ups, etc. Only thing I noticed missing is the lifters meeting to go over rules but hopefully you've already read them for the fed you're lifting in and have been practicing them in training.

This is for us lifters who have multiple meets under our belts. If you overhear or see someone who is lifting in their first meet, just give them a word of encouragement or say something nice to them to make them feel welcome. I know it can be very intimidating walking in to a meet and not being able to lift as much as everyone else, but being made to feel welcome will bring them back to more meets for sure.

Just did my very fist meet this past weekend!
Like a lot of people already said in here, it is important to go in not comparing yourself to others as it is your first meet.
I met some amazing, supportive and really strong people that really helped me throughout the day!
A guy I met was competing in his 22nd meet!!! how can you compare yourself to everyone if it's your first one?

I went in with an open mind and I was just really excited to finish off the day without bombing out as I have terrible anxiety and was super nervous to even step on the platform!
I went 7/9 and was happy as I got a new Squat PR, tied my bench PR (in the gym no pause though) and new deadlift PR! Couldn't have asked for more!

Something that helped me relax was thinking to myself.....even if I could magically add 100lb to all of my lifts.....I still wouldn't be feeling any different since you're always going to end up comparing yourself to stronger people the more you progress anyways!
Sign up for your first meet and don't worry about the numbers!
Another thing I learned was even if you hit certain number sin the gym, it does not of course translate to the same lifts in a meet. My squats and bench felt great, but once it was time to deadlift my legs were already feeling tired, sore, tight hips and everything. I was not sued to doing maxes for all three lifts at once since my program usually asked for 2 main lifts in one workout at most! I really had a goal of hitting my first 500 lbs deadlift in the meet but it just wasn't realistic once I got to the deadlift portion as I noticed my legs were shot. I'm glad I scaled my deadlift attempts a bit back and was still able to hit a new PR of 452 lbs! I will definitely get that 500 lbs in my next one!

    OPA -Niagara Power-lifting Open 2018
    Body-weight: 111 kg (120 kg weight class)

    Squat: 185kg/ 408 lbs (failed 3rd attempt of 192.5kg)
    Bench: 107.5kg/ 237 lbs (failed 3rd attempt 112.5kg)
Deadlift: 205 kg / 452 lbs (went 3/3 and was super excited since my deadlift has always been terrible)

Check out my short video if you want to see the attempts!
    Peace!

On the subject of caffeine- are there rules to the use of preworkouts and whatnot? Would those fall under the “banned” substance category? For instance, would it be a bad idea to waltz into a meet with a C4 ultimate carbonated can in hand?

I might be jumping into the middle of a convo I don't have the context of, my apologies if so. Caffeine was removed from WADA testing like a decade ago or something? In 2018, it was 'monitored' whatever that means, but not banned in or out of competition. Even if it made a return, the required levels would be like 10 espressos over a couple of hours on the day of the sport.

Now, that's just WADA... olympic testing, and a variety of other natty sports (bodybuilding, power lifting) use it. But it's entirely dependent on what the standards of the org are... some use WADA, some just make up their own standards.

I'm a little sad to see little activity in this forum (not much in the PL forums overall...).
I was originally on these forums in 2007, on active duty and training for my first meet when I was in a car accident that fractured two vertebra, herniated several others and damaged several efferent nerve clusters....
Needless to say I was out of powerlifting before I'd ever done my first meet. I dropped off the forums until returning to lurk recently.
I recovered enough after a year post injury to resume sports like soccer and mountain biking but was afraid to lift heavy weights.
I did some lifting here and there mostly for injury protection, but finally asked my doctor what he thought about me powerlifting and he gave me the green light with the caveat that I may not be able to lift as much due to nerve damage (parts of my right triceps and outer right pec still don't fire due to lack of enervation), but he said I should not cause damage or injury.
My friends talked me into signing up for a meet and I entered!

I read a lot online, watched countless youtubes, and trained for 6 weeks.

Meet day came and I followed a lot of the advice from this thread and elsewhere.

I'm not as strong as I was in 2007, but I was both surprised and pleased to participate and compete!
Competing will motivate me to be more consistent in the gym, and as so many have stated here, is a fun activity to participate in.
There were a ton of very friendly folks who helped me out and it was great cheering for my flight for each of us to do our best.
And since this post is in 2020, COVID made for a strange addition to the experience but the organizers did great adapting.

    In any case:
Forever Strong Event, Springfield, OR USPA meet
Competed in full event, 45-49 age group, 220lb weight
Squat: 385/410 make, missed 425 for depth
Bench: 275 failed due to unrack 'helper', 285/303 make
    DL: 385/415/470 make
My 1185 total (actual tally was 537.5 kg) was even higher than I'd hoped for this first meet and certainly left me with a 'high' feeling!

Overall, a fantastic experience and I hope others out there are still motivated/excited to powerlift and challenge yourselves!
I know this motivates me to hit the gym, work on healthy eating, and set goals.
I'm hoping to see my numbers go back up and who knows, maybe go to nationals etc!

    Just making sure.
    yeah maybe
