So i understand the science behind it all but wondering because I have never "bought into it"
All my supps, whey, diet, workout is in line but I;m beginning my first attempt at a true bulk
I tend to get hungrier as the night progresses but try not to eat much after 7pm///
I tend to get a tb or 2 of Natty PB in or some jello just to have the 0 cals before I sleep...sip the green tea all evening
Is Casein really worth the investment? I figure I can drink that when i get the hunger around 9pm and it carry me through the evening? I just don't want to drop over $20 on something that's going to get me fat or provide no benefit in the meantime...

Honestly, the need not to eat after 7pm is completely psychological. One of the ways that people get fat is that they chow down after dinner, eating a tub of ice cream, a piece of cake, candy, liquor, etc. The traditional cheat meal occurs after dinner. We associate night time eating, therefore, as cheating.
I've had to reprogram myself to stop thinking that night time eating is bad. In fact, it plays a necessary part in muscle building. I'm stronger now, because I've adopted a pattern of eating that allows me to eat in nighttime (as long as it fits my macros), and I don't gain fat. Get some good casein or MPI and work it into your diet.

I mean...the 7pm thing is not mandatory. Basically, about 2 hours before bed, I quit eating. i've had that rule for a couple of years now. But if I throw in the Casein close to bedtime, I should be ok from what I gather...
like I said, I will be getting my bulking cals from real food during the day.

Good Point. i don't want to seem like a freak..I mean, occasionally I eat SOMETHING close to bed time.

Like You, I was a terrible night eater. I blew up to 250lbs at 5'7" because of poor choices. 4 years and 2 marathon (26 mile races) later, i am at 168-170.
I was down to 152 in April and decided to start serious bodybuilding. But I NEVER want to be 250lbs of fat again
That's where eating smart at night comes in. But I want to get protein in before bed on my bulk, just in a "clean" way. Cottage Cheese might be my choice over the powder....
I work overnight 8pm-8am 2-3 days a week so night hungers hit me. (I do sleep on those shifts beginning between midnight-2am...allowed...but I always get the hunger late. ) Sipping on Casein or snacking on the cottage cheese sounds promising.

There is no reason that you should avoid eating within 2 hours of bed or whatever - I ate within minutes of bed and gotten to single digit bf%. Just manage your calories effectively. If you sleep for 8 hours and don't eat fro 2 hours prior, that's 10 hours fasted. I see no benefit.
A protein + fat meal is best pre-bed for slow digesting calories that will satiate you throughout the night. You can have a casein blend, peanut butter, cottage cheese, sure. You can also have salmon, chicken, steak, almonds, etc.NPC Bodybuilder, Mother and Hater Extraordinaire

everyone's different, some guys (even when dieting) need a ton of carbs and protein right up to bedtime to avoid losing muscle during the night. Find what works best for you through trial and error <--- yes you may have to put on a bit of pudge to determine what works but in the long run you will get to your goals much quicker and easier

Good advice ^^^^
If your awake, you should be eating every 3 hours.
I always find whole food to be superior to shakes for my last meal. It definitely satiates you longer and if your concerned about being lean, keep in mind that whole food is thermogenic, shakes generally are not.Free Agent

Let's see....
113 grams of fat free cottage cheese has:
Calories: 80
% Daily Value*
Total Fat 0.0g 0%
Cholesterol 5mg 2%
Sodium 430mg 18%
Total Carbohydrates 7.0g 2%
Sugars 7.0g
Protein 14.0g
113 grams of MPI has:
Calories: 403
Total Fat 3.8g
Cholesterol 0mg
Sodium 117mg
Total Carbohydrates 1.5g
Sugars 0g
Protein 94.0g
I don't know how much you may pay for a pound of cottage cheese, but for me it would probably run at around $4-5. With MPI going for $7-8 per pound, there is no contest if the deciding factor was price!

You are quite right in your prices, however, for me it cheaper and easier to share with my wife and kids if I buy the cottage cheese, its like under $4/lb. where I shop, buying in bulk is cheaper . Plus, I can save the protein powder for me, (selfish, kinda ), I have never had a problem saying "Honey, out of cottage cheese, we need to get more." without catching any flak. vs. "Honey, I'm out of protein powder again, I need to get more." Now thats a different story.
