How long can you live on 3% body fat?

Now I've seen the body fat picture post where it states that 3% bf can only be held for a matter of hours before facing serious health problems. Now I am trying to explain this to some people, and they refuse to believe this. Not only that, but some say that you can be healthy at 3% or less body fat. Please correct them.

Men can remain healthy at ~3% body fat for a while, but the effort required to do it is not insignificant. So the answer to your question is... "It depends."

You see, at that low of a percentage, your auxiliary energy stores are practically GONE. 3% and below mostly resides in your organs and lean tissues, and not in subdermal stores. In order to maintain good health without those stores, you must become VERY concientious with your eating and the frequency of it.

Old-time bodyman Clarence Bass stayed under 6% even between competitions, and brought himself to below 3% quite frequently. These days, many pros are going for such small percentages in an effort to present themselves "shredded" for the ultimate in definition.

I held to somewhere under 6% for a couple of years back when I did really heavy manual labor daily and had the metabolism of a hummingbird. The problem with that was... I couldn't gain any lean mass (stayed around 145 lbs at 5' 9" in my early 20's). Frankly, I was feeling pretty ashamed of my body back then for being so small, even though I was strong and shredded to the gills. I also sank like a rock in the water if I stopped tredding (even with my lungs full of air) which was a little disconcerting.

Attaining and holding at around 10% (when not competing) is pretty ideal for most men. That is still plenty of fat for a buffer and a little insulation. Though, if you showed up for a body building contest in that condition these days, you'd be laughed off the stage.
    Stats: Ugly, fat and weak.
    Immediate Goal: Quit being fat.
Long Term Goal: Quit being weak.

getting under 3% is VERY doubtful......under 4% is utter insanity.....your body senses a serious lack of energy both short term and long term and procedes to burn muscle tissue over bodyfat in order to
    1) preserve your remaining fat stores
    2) lower your resting metabolic rate so it can better preserve energy...

your body has evolved to survive, when it feels it is in serious danger of starvation its got a whole gear of systems it can shut down...

some being: your reproductive system (requires energy) slows metabolism significantly, ceases muscle synthesis and repair, lowers immune response, significantly reduces testostrone production, slows blood circulation to appandages and reserves it for the brain and critical organs, slows kidney fuction, slows liver function

your body isn't stupid, which is why its so hard to achieve low to mid single digit bodyfats....you have a genetic point designed where your body will become unhappy with your current bodyfat situation and will stimulate hunger and increase fat storage and start to deactive or slow down body functions outside immidate surivival....your genetics of course regulate this, but its ultra rare you will find someone who runs around at sub 5% happly.....most people have trouble getting under ~10-11% athletes usually run around at 9-10% and during periods of competition or intense training drop another few %....but to start staying under 6% unless your genetics allow it your gonna start playing hell with your system.....

you won't remain at 3% very long regardless if you try or not your body simply will not allow it, it will correct the inbalance by slowing your metabolism so you gain fat or you will have to progressivily starve yourself to outfit your slowing metabolic rate and you will eventually die.....

    Ok..

I am 4-5% max..no doubt about it. I have tried several of those machines (handheld) The trainer at the gym said that once your bf% is lower than like 6% it gives an error/cant read reading. Those readings pop up whenever i test it....no matter what time not matter what machine..even the ones on the scale.

Looking great (if you have muscle) around 7-12%
Healthy I have no idea, but probably above 8% for most people.

    That's for males BTW.

    ??

ok..whatever..its not a big deal to me like it is to some of you. I am just telling you what ive seen. I dont lift that much; i am not a bodybuilder. I usually run and my resting bpm is 45. My veins do show up all over my calfs...and chest and abs, especially after a workout. Those body fat percentages on the machine just keep giving me error all the time. Might be more than 4 might be 8 might be 16. I am by no means an expert on this.

thats the first case i have ever heard of, and i unsure how accurate bodyfat tests were in the 50's and 60's.....possible MAYBE, but even todays pros with every chemical assistant under the sun rarely reach low 3's, and they have a huge amount of muscle mass which helps the equation in there favor....simply put the brown adipose and kidney supporting tissue makes up 2-3% of your fat contant, not to mention coating on neurons......

NYUstudent, whenever you chew do the tendons popping out on your face disgust everyone? Do you have tiny lines running across every muscle in your body?

Do you look like this guy?

I didn't think so. THAT is a guy at 3%.
Thanks jerkoff (j/k), I almost lost my breakfast. That was gross. No one can tell me he looks good.

Hey, NYUStudent, lets see that pic of your 5% max BF. Might as well show us and I'm sure many can tell you what you really are. Not doubting, just want to see this.

****..I am 14% now and I can already seen veins and such. I think you'd look pretty sickly at 4% or lower.

I tend to agree, though some of us lack any great deal of surface vascularity. Our veins do not become a prominant feature... ever.

With a good tan and not way too much vascularity, 6% can look pretty awesome... like a muscle anatomy chart without the distraction of an overabundance of criss-crossing veins. 4% and less would be really hard to maintain, and not very attractive for most of us.
    Stats: Ugly, fat and weak.
    Immediate Goal: Quit being fat.
Long Term Goal: Quit being weak.
