Calluses - any solution besides gloves?

I've picked up the intensity/length of my weight training recently and the only drawback (primarily due to compliants from my wife about my hands being too rough) is the frequency and increased size of calluses on my hands.

Every 6 4-6 weeks I end up trimming them down with finger nail clippers and filing them with an emory board. Anyother suggestions on minimizing them or speeding up the healing process?

PS. I'd rather not use lifting gloves for various reasons (feel, wetness, smell, etc)

if you go to a beauty supply store they have these tools that they use for doing pedicures , similar to a wood plane, but for skin. Its used on the thick skin on ur heels. I got my wife to get me one and about every month or so I soak my hands and it takes the callouses right off, its a razor that cant cut you, well Im sure you could if you rubbed it the wrong way. it works great about 10 bucks

You might give this little tool a try for the tough ones.

Seriously though I have the same problems and I just sand them down with an emory board. The tool that fireman suggested sounds interesting though.

ROTFLMFAO...that was funny. Now for my opinion to the question at hand. The calluses will go away in time. Filing them helps. One thing you may try that will soften your hands is about once a month, put vaseline on your hands before you go to bed and wear latex gloves. In the morning, wash your hands as normal. Its extreme, but it does work.

Fireman's suggestion is a good one - it's a metal rasp-like tool that'll take the callouses off your hands & feet; it just removes the dead, built-up skin. After that, a good product to use is Zim's Crack Creme, found at local drug stores & Walmart, to use on your hands & feet. Additionally, put some cream/lotion on your hands several times a day; that will soften your skin when you touch your wife.

Tea Tree Oil also works well on hands, find a lotion that has it listed as one of the first 3 ingredients.

Try these if you don't like gloves, etc.

    www.bigbackgrips.com

They'll cut back on calluses and let you do more weight on back, etc. They're like 5 or 6 bucks and they feel really good.

A good idea in theory for an archive, but not so good on a message board forum.

Nothing worse then shaking another man's hand and it is softer then my wifes!..... I am actually disgusted by it.....it leaves me with a weird creepy feeling.

If my hands felt soft like that, I believe I would have to go home every night and mix concrete with my bare hands till they got a little tougher.

If you ever shake a mason's hand....you will know what I mean.

Just went through this on another site. I don't see why you would want to get rid of natures way of helping you grip better. I can't attack a dead lift without them. The bar tends to want to roll out of my grip. It's those calluses that keep the bar where it is.

Think how better his grip would have been if he had let them go for the past 2 years I sometimes get the impression that people really don't want the work. They prefer going through the motions.

I know this an old thread but take care of the callous. They're cool until they rip off. Buy a ped egg or a pumice stone to sand them down. The joke term for ripping off a big pad in a games or contest is "dynamic exfoliation". Ripped off a good one at a Dinnie stone lift/ walk this year. Freakin rebar handles....

You should start another thread asking the women whether or not they prefer a man with hands that are a little rough or creepy little soft hands...

I think they are cool as well, but in my sport/activities they can become a problem. The handles on throwing weights, and farmers walk implements put pressure on them and then they tear. Bloody and painful. It's more a question of trimming and sanding them down. I got on the news in Toronto a few years ago when I ripped all four at once throwing a 56lbs weight. I think there was some good WSM footage of a bunch of guys ripping the hell out of their hands on the power stairs a few years ago. I'll see if I can find it. I guess for BB/DB use it really isn't as much of a problem.

pumice stone is best way to get rid of them or smooth them down. Personally I only do it when my girl complains. I likehaving them, since I dont like weight gloves and for everyday functions having tough hands is useful.
