Has anyone out there got some encouraging info or personal accounts of quitting smoking's affect on your overall progress? I'm trying to quit, but it's very hard and I thought if anyone could let me know how much difference it makes in muscle gain I'd appreciate it.
Before I get flamed, I realize that it's a stupid, gross unhealthy habit. that's why I"m trying to quit. Please be positive![]()

You should come in and visit the cadaver lab I worked in back in the fall. One of our cadavers, a 45 year old male, died of lung cancer. You lift up his rib cage that has been partially cut away, and you get a great look at two blackened, shriveled up sacs that used to be his lungs. Enough to make any smoker swear off cigarettes for life.
But, more realistically, know that quitting can be done, and that although you always hear about the unsuccessful attempts, people do successfully quit. My mother is currently on her way to quitting with my help, and I've had a few friends who have quit and seem to lead more healthy, positive lives now.
Also, it helps if you sit down and calculate how many packs a day/week/month/whatever you smoke, and figure out exactly how much money per day/week/month/whatever that comes out to be. That's how much you could save!
Start off by telling yourself that at the end of each, say, week, you'll take the amount of money you saved on cigarettes and buy yourself something nice, something you've wanted to buy. This could be enough extrinsic motivation to get you started, and after a while, you won't need to self-gifts, so you'll be quitting AND saving money at the same time.
Good luck.

I've been off for over 2 months now and have NEVER felt better(that I can recall anyway) can't imagine why I ever did, and seriously regret the damaged I accumulated over the past 10 years. Motivation I used...
You stink....having my sense of smell back makes you realize you really do stink when you smoke
Lung Damage....the ability to take a deep breath, live long enough to see kids grow up, grand kids, a plethora of options here
Cost.... the $$$ you save buys some pretty cool new toys
Taste of food...it's a simple thing but boy did I miss it, everything tastes so good now.
It sounds like your ready, I used the patch, can't fail method.
Picture those little white cancer sticks like the next weight barrier you need to lift, smash it, destroy. How can a little white stick beat you? It can't.
Good Luck, the best thing you'll ever do if you suceed.“The longer I live, the more I am certain that the great difference between the great and insignificant is energy--invincible determination-- a purpose once fixed and then death or victory.”

I quit smoking almost 9 months ago. I can tell you, it's a hard road to travel. Cardio is what helped me. Knowing that I would need to breathe was a big wake up for me. If you really want to know how to quit, take this advice that I got from someone who has emphysema. My Uncle, is 92 years old. He lost his wife to smoking (cancer), and has battle emphysema for years. It is so bad, that he has to have an oxygen mask on in the shower. He couldn't come visit us on Christmas, because there was no tanks ready for his flight. He told me once when I was smoking, to run as fast as I can for 45 seconds, then.... light up a smoke.... inhale as deep as I can, then with the smoke still in my lungs, cough as hard as I could. That he said, times 10 is what emphysema feels like. It takes him 5 minutes to walk from the car, to our front door. It's a 30 feet walk give or take. If that isn't enough to make you quit...... you're not ready!
Good luck, and I hope you quit! Cold turkey is the way!

good luck to ya'
i'm working on it myself, bro.
i am curious though if any studies have been done on muscle mass gained after quitting, or muscle mass loss while smoking. i know it breeds antioxidants/free radicals (or something) which are harmful to muscle tissue. it's tough... especially when everyone else around does it. but keep us posted on the site, and i'll do the same.
best of luck to yaYou're going to get criticized no matter what you do, especially if you're trying to achieve something and rise above the flock. Do it anyway. Negative criticism from others is often a sign that you're on your way up in the world.
