I think my left shoulder (for bench press) and left elbow (for chin-up) started healing at last. Pains are now significantly manageable. Nevertheless I have to be careful because in the past my injuries always happened when I was getting substantial progresses and feeling good about my workout result.

My latest favorite bites, Poor man's Pizza, extra crispy!! (actually Jobless man's in Tokyo)

Sausages and melting natural cheeze On Toasted French Bread Slices. It costs only $1 per meal.

    --------------------------------------------------

I train at home, alone, therefore I don't have any gym-buddy here in Tokyo.

I spent most of my time in my study-cum-training room when I am at home. A six-mat* space which is roughly nine feet by twelve feet, where hundreds of books, more than a thousand of DVDs(movie), TV, my new PC and my training equipment are struggling to find a way to coexist. *a Japanese tatami mat (1.82m?; 37.6 in by 75.2 in)

I also eat and sleep (in futon bed) in this very room.

Everytime before starting my workout, I have to rearrange my room and other knicks and knacks in order to set up the workout equipments. It usually takes 5 mins. Everytime after my workout, I have to rearrange back my equipment, other tchotchke and chachka. It usually takes more than 5 mins. Tiresome but no other way.

A bench with a leg attachment. I have never bought new equipments aside from a few bars and plates since I bought the ones I currently am using. Those are my heroes!!

A chinning stand: For Weighted Chin (up to BW + 60kg (123 lbs) and Squat (up to 120kg=265 lbs)

The bench and the stand have been my best buddies for the last 35 years. Though had to patch up with duct tape, never once re-tightened the bolts. I'm really proud of them!!

That's a totally efficient use of space, Kaz. But I see why you like your rucking!

But still, 88 lbs x 8 on the weighted chinups??? You are awesome and intimidating, sir! I think you must be hiding your true super powers. Are you sure you aren't really Clark Kent?

Nice work lately Kaz! Some nice rucking going on. Agreed - your chin-ups are impressive.

As someone else who works out at home a lot, I really like your setup. I too have to get creative sometimes with space but it all seems to work out.

Another home gym guy here. You do what you need to do. I bought my first piece of new equipment this year, a power rack, everything else I either build or buy used. I wouldn't trade it for anything. I like being able to do what I want to do, when I want to do it and how I want to do it. Can't do that in a commercial gym.

I wish I could chin. My max is about 8 BW, so I do smaller sets to work up to 15 to 20 reps.
David, a 56 year old pastor, husband and father.

Best Lifts - Squat 375lbs Bench 205 lbs Deadlift 470lbs. Goals in next year? Be the best Me I can be.

Kaz, if you seriously mean this, then I humbly apologize! I certainly mean no disrespect. How have the mighty honorifics fallen! If I was referring to you as a senior, I would have called you "sire"!

I can't call you "Dude", because that's Zav's moniker. Since there is a word that, suffice to say the Knights of Ni cannot hear, maybe I can say "Ni" to you.

An interesting article. We are an informal society in many ways, but we can't say that such informality is a rule -- because that would formalize it! I can't speak for all Americans (only one) or all Japanese (only none), but as I have used the word, it can apply to dozens of different contexts in different ways. There's certainly an age consideration, but that's merely one context among the many. For example, I'll often apply it to a millennial or younger when I intend a respectful context. It's unexpected (by them), a bit disarming, and as an older guy, it helps them feel like I'm including them on my level, as an equal. It takes away some of the age imbalance. Among my close friends, we actually use it on one another quite often (of course, we're also liberal with our mutual insults!) in ways that I would not apply it to a stranger. Sometimes, the whole formal posturing acts like an extended exclamation point to whatever idea we're trying to emphasize at the time. It also enhances our shared preference for a bit of drama in an otherwise mundane conversation.

Sometimes, it's reminiscent of that scene from "The Two Towers", where Merry and Pippen greet Theoden, Gandalf, Legolas, Gimli, and Aragorn with great ceremonial courtesy amid the ruins of Isengard. We may be close, but there are others listening who don't know us!

And finally, when I see a guy doing 10 reps of chinups hanging 77 pounds of weights, I have to find SOME way of expressing my tremendous respect, admiration, and deference, or I'll completely tie myself in knots! That's a fantastic performance!

    Kaz and ELbaby,

I thought I would add an observation or two about "sir." I have lived most of my life in the Deep South where most men were called "Mister Dave" or "Mister Whetever" and women were, "Ms. Wahtever." If you didn't know their name, it was 'sir" or "ma'am" as a sign of respect. Some southerners, my wife is one, who feel that is should be reserved for a child to an adult or for the elderly. She takes great offense if I use "ma'am" in talking to her. Having lived in the Northeast and now in the Mid Atlantic areas of the US, there does not seem to be as great a usage of these terms.

All that said, I am not offended by "sir," but normally reply, "My dad was the Navy officer, he is 'sir,' my name is David." As a pastor, I rarely get "sir" as it is more proper to use "Reverend" or "Pastor" when addressing me formally.

Okay, done with that. I wish my chins/pullups were half as good as yours. Keep up the great work.

You know what, it turned out to be a great discussion!! I love you Dave and Zav (and you Kevin).

kaz-zav-dave-kevin! hum.....are we related or something?

I watched too many movies during the last 50 years or so. Many of them had a scene, the old man said angrily, "Don't call me, sir!" I have a tendency to identify myself with those fictional characters.

That's one of the point aside from the age issue. I feel you as one of the closest friends here in BB.com. Especially now when realizing I no longer belong to any organization, I also no longer have any friends left where I live. *I moved a lot and I was born, grew up, went to colledge, got a job, got married, raised my daughter and retired, all different places those events happened.

When I was called "sir", I felt a distance and a little sad. I know it's all my imagination.

I think I can understand that. Dave, I wish I had your intelligence!

So you are saying you are Gandalf and I'm Legolas!! I love your analogy!

Ok, I'm going to get used to your occasional "sir" without feeling my "phantom aging pain", ELbaby!

Hi, Kevin I missed you and your panoramic photos!!

I love the one in the middle, with a winding road in the distance. A Promise of An Epic Adventure!!

I've read in the other thread. You are doing "Gym Climbing"?

I guess it took a while for the grip strength and flexibility to return to the point where I'm able to climb at that level again.
Pray tell us about it when you have time!!

BTW Kevin, are you comfortable being with being called "sir"? Sorry gents, couldn't help it. *LOL*

Pray tell us about it when you have time!!
I've been climbing at the Phoenix Rock Gym off and on since they opened in 1992.

Back in '92, I was really enthusiastic about climbing, but I still had a lot to learn about technique. Climbing at the Phoenix Rock Gym taught me a lot about climbing technique. I remember my first time trying and failing to climb one of the overhanging walls at the first location of the gym. I remember another climber named Michelle giving me a few pointers on body position when climbing such a wall. It made all the difference!

During the early years, before we had kids, my wife, Marilyn, would climb with me at the gym. When my son was born, we'd bring him into the gym in a baby carrier. He'd sit beside us and watch people climb, learning by watching. Later on, when the kids were bigger, we'd occasionally bring them into the gym with us, though neither of them were really all that into it when they were little.

At some point along the way, I began to experience some shoulder problems. I'm not entirely certain that climbing was the problem, but it hurt, so I stopped for a long while. My shoulder problem eventually - some number of years later - became so bad that I sought medical advice, turned down the drugs and surgery, and opted for physical therapy instead. Not long after that, my son expressed interest in climbing, so we started climbing together at the gym. He became quite good at it, doing routes that I could only ever dream of doing. (At my best, I could climb 5.11, but was never able to make more than a few moves on a 5.12. These numbers are ratings of difficulty using the Yosemite Decimal System - YDS.)

At some point and for reasons which aren't especially clear to me, my son and I stopped climbing together. However, a few years later, my daughter expressed interest and so we climbed together during her early high school years. She also became good very quickly. She's at university now and the climbing gym is located only a few blocks away. We climb together from time to time, but her course load often prevents her from climbing with me.

My wife has started climbing again, however! We try to get in to climb twice a week. Marilyn also has shoulder problems but has found that her shoulder usually feels better after climbing.

Below is a video that my wife made of my daughter climbing a route called Ol' Solo Mio in the Mine Area at Queen Creek Canyon. Rating-wise, it's considered an easy route - but the first bolt is a ways off the ground. Much of the early part of the video consists of her trying a sequence, backing off, and then she and I discussing how to climb to that first bolt so that it could be clipped. (There's a technique called "stick clipping" in which a long pole is used to clip a high first bolt from the ground - we didn't do that.)

(There are a few other videos of us climbing together. You can find them on my channel if you're interested...)

I watched too many movies during the last 50 years or so. Many of them had a scene, the old man said angrily, "Don't call me, sir!" I have a tendency to identify myself with those fictional characters.
I don't mind if you call me sir... Just don't call me Shirley!

That, I understand. Used to be people living such a nomadic life were rare. Now it almost seems the norm. It has it's upside, but it has it's downside as well. My family is scatterred, and few of my friends are close enough to see regularly. But one upside is, I can now have friends halfway across the world!

I think I can understand that. Dave, I wish I had your intelligence!
You don't need my intelligence, Kaz. You've got plenty of your own!

So you are saying you are Gandalf and I'm Legolas!! I love your analogy!
Or am I Gimli? Sometimes I feel more like that. But Gandalf and Gimli both have righteous beards, so that may leave more in the position of.... Smeagol?

Ok, I'm going to get used to your occasional "sir" without feeling my "phantom aging pain", ELbaby!
No you won't. Now that I know your wishes, I'll respect them happily. (Unless I forget!)

And Zav, you are a great mediator!!
He is, isn't he? It's almost like he should be a... like... a pastor, or something.

Hi, Kevin I missed you and your panoramic photos!!

I love the one in the middle, with a winding road in the distance. A Promise of An Epic Adventure!!

It's funny, for so many years I've lived less than a day's drive from Bryce Canyon, and I've never been there. But it's always one of my favorite images. Those pictures really stir my hiking blood!

BTW Kevin, are you comfortable being with being called "sir"? Sorry gents, couldn't help it. *LOL*
I'll be waiting outside if anybody needs me...

Those photos that I posted are from a place called Fairlyland Canyon. It's part of Bryce Canyon National Park, but it's a little off the (really well) beaten path in that you don't get to it by going through the park's main entrance. As a result, it's not quite as busy as some of the other trails in the park. It's possible to hike from the Fairyland Canyon Trailhead into the main part of the park. As I think about it a bit more, I think it's even possible to do a loop. On the day that I did it, I ended up doing it as an out-and-back. Distance that I hiked would have been about the same as the loop, but my wife and daughter were waiting for me after hiking only an initial section of the trail.

Thanks Kevin, that's a great vid!! The true scale of the scene was revealed by "The other person in the adjacent crack", a small white dot until the camera zoomed in.

That was the shortest but the most exciting 14 mins in my life!! Your daughter's great athlete can't believe she did it to the top!! Yahoo!! I always wonder how could you climb back down to the ground after finished the climb..........and how could you trust those bolts. You are the bravest bunch and say kudos to your daughter from me, the Spidergirl!!

I went through into the net and looked the term.
"out and back" is a trail that ends, and you need to turn around and use the same trail to come back. It can also be called "in and out" or "destination trail."
Out-and-Back courses start and finish at the same location, and follow a linear route to the half-way point before doing a 180 and returning the same way they came.
Loop courses also typically begin and end in the same place, but follow a non-repeating route around the area.
I feel like a little wiser than yesterday!

On Monday, the 21st, I got the opportunity to hike to the top of Battleship Mountain.

This is what it looks like from the Boulder Canyon Trail when starting out from Canyon Lake - we didn't do it this way on Monday, but it's more impressive from this vantage point. (I took this photo in March of 2018.)

This shot (and everything else below) are from Monday. We're on the mountain now, which is a sort of long narrow ridge leading to the summit. The ridge alternated between sections of "easy" hiking and problems that needed to be solved in order to move forward. Most of the problems involved scrambling (easy climbing) of some sort.

The dark spot on the reddish-orange rock just left of center is another hiker making his way back. It was kind of daunting seeing him do that section - it looked to be pretty exposed at first, though we saw that he eventually made his way into a dihedral for his descent. This turned out to be one of the easier sections of scrambling on this hike.

This is a view from near the summit - I had already summitted and then wandered over to a somewhat lower point to get this photo. The ridge (deck?) of Battleship Mountain can be seen here. The pinnacle in the distance is Weaver's Needle.

We're on our way back now. This section is not the hardest section, but it is the most exposed.

Looking into La Barge Canyon on the left...

Yeah, ain't that something. It's not just the great things they did with the special effects, but while I had some major disagreements with the scene selection and some of the dialog in those movies, and some of the changes they made to the books, I have to say it was the most perfectly cast ensemble of characters I've ever seen. I wouldn't have changed a single one of them. Still a masterpiece after all these years. (Unlike the Hobbit series)

Thanks Kevin, those are beautiful and magnificent views!! To a person like me who live in a small island, with miles and miles of rocks and fields these photos are like that of another planet. Cannot help but imagine that with packs on your back, when you loose balance and slip what would happen? *shudder*

I cannot count how many times I watched LOTR trilogy movie. Sad part is all those different species with different purpose of life and different life expectancy, at the end the fellowship will go separate ways like many other tales of adventure. *tears*
