Question Why does POKER get so much Play on ESPN? Is it really a Sport?

I like playing poker on Friday nights with the guys but damn! How can this be considered a sport? It gets more Coverage then Boxing.

Anyone know how this World series of poker got so huge?

No idea, but I always see it on tv. I don't mind watching it sometimes, but it really does get old after a while.

ya I dont get why they dont show BodyBuilding instead? but they show this? Poker just promotes people to sit on there ass and say hey I can get rich just playing poker! while bodybuilding would actually help inspire people say hey I wanna train too.

I occasionally watch a final table if ther are some decent names up there, but that is rare. Its mostly unknowns.

Poker is a sport just not a spectator sport.

It's really popular is the main reason.

I actually like watching the WSOP on TV but yea I can see where people would be upset watching it on ESPN.

That's why they play it on slow nights like Friday when everyone is out socializing.

I'm sorry but if it's not physical I don't consider it a sport.

I've yet to figure out why they show this BS on ESPN.
    Friendship b/w women:
A woman doesn't come home one night. The next day she tells her husband she slept over at a girlfriend's place. Her husband calls 10 of her best friends. None know anything about it.

    Friendship b/w men:
A man doesn't come home one night. The next day he tells his wife he slept over at a friend's place. His wife calls 10 of the husband's best friends. 8 of them confirm he slept over, the other 2 claim he's still there.

its popular because everyone thinks they can play with the pros and win plus there is so much money involved.

I love playing and watching Poker but i would say it is definetly not a sport, its just a card game.

Anyone know how this World series of poker got so huge?

It got so huge because in 2003, a regular guy, Chris Moneymaker, won the world series main event against some of, if not, the best players in the world. This started the phenomenon of regular ppl thinking that if he can do it, i can do it, sparking a huge poker boom. Unlike other sports, you dont need years and years of training and dedication to play with the best and at the turn of a card can become an instant millionaire. Thus explaining the rise of poker and also the prize money involved aswell, as long as there is lots of money to be won, these tournaments will always be around.

its a good money maker when they have nothing else to put on.. the major sports are only on so much

plus, its a game that everyone thinks they can play well.. people can be like, "oh i wouldnt of made that call.." and so on.. no one is gonna be like, "I would of hit that homerun or I would of made that tackle"
