I guess he could see the writing on the wall.
Max when he's not crashing is faster in qualifying, younger and more marketable with a stronger following in Europe which influences the pecking order, and he doesn't want to get paid less. Honda could also be a dud — time will tell. I'm sure he likes the idea of racing Max and proving he's the more complete driver without team orders spoiling the fun.
They're both exciting drivers. Hope it works out for him.

Agree ^Dom he just saw RBR marketing Max hard and needed fresh start.
As for Reanult I don't like the move at all. Its a mid field team. They still get lapped by Mercedes/Ferrari/RBR.
Renault hasn't been good team since 2005/2006 season.
Ricciardo got blocked by Mercedes and Ferrari because Hamilton and Vettel want nothing to do with very fast driver.
Such a pity that no team wants to have two very good drivers.

“I have never asked to be number one in a contract. Vettel may have that clause or Alonso who always asks for it. But I want to beat the guy at my side on equal terms. I know many people in the paddock would be happy with it (number 1 status), but it is not for me.”
I'll bet many of his fans believe that load of horsesh*t. He's been beaten twice by Jenson (2011) and Rosberg (2016) and obviously had no say on Nico because he joined before he did. We saw last weekend exactly what he wants — a "wingman."
Guarantee he told Toto "it's him or me" and that's why he stalled on the contract. No way they passed on a driver of his Ricciardo's calibre who would have been an upgrade over Rosberg and Bottas without Hamilton playing hardball. You know if the guy is stopping Rosberg from doing post race interviews he absolutely has a say on who joins the team now. That's fine but quit lying about it and taking cheap shots at other drivers in the process.

It happened for sure.
Ricciardo has been talking with Mercedes/Ferrari since beginning of year.
Lewis put pressure on Mercedes stalling contract talks. No way would he allow strong driver to go against him.
Vettel in interviews has said few times he wouldn't mind Ricciardo at Ferrari but who knows if he really meant it, I am thinking Ferrari is keeping the seat warm for Leclerc and Kimi will retire at end of year.
Leclerc is the next real deal and Ferrari is probably nervous he might go elsewhere.
........................
Thinking about it now.
Dan probably figures Red Bull won't be title challenger next two years with that Honda engine so even if Renault is step back.
Nothing would be lost by staying at RBR.
There is massive rule change coming for 2021 at time when Ricciardo will be free agent.

Alonso will retire at the end of the year, he cannot get into a better car at this point.
Theres just no logical reason for him to carry on, he's 37, which means by the 2021 rule changes he'll be past 40 and his skill will have deteriorated which is the only real chance McLaren have of catching up Mercedes/Ferrari, and hes been in the sport 17 years now, the McLaren has literally got a 5% chance of even challenging for podiums next year nevermind wins, theres no spot at Mercedes open, I assume Red Bull will promote Gasly, Ferrari taking him back should Raikkonen retire would be given a firm no by Vettel as he would be too much of a challenge.
Why carry on if the end goal isn't achievable, he hasn't won a race in over 5 years at this point, him moving to McLaren was to stop just getting odd wins like he did in 2013 at Ferrari, it was to get his 3rd title, which will not happen now.RIP BIG RICHARD

He is driving for Renault 2019/2020 season.
Announcement has been made.
The free agent market at end of 2020 will open a lot of doors for Dan.
Mercedes and Ferrari will have open seats again.
Hamilton will be 36 by 2021 and probably retire.
Vettel might stick around for 2021 being he will be only 34.
That being said I have feeling if Vettel wins title this year or next year he might do Rosberg and retire.

Yeah silly move in hindsight. And since t hen it's just been 3 years of "he gives invaluable feedback on the car" lol. Until last year when he finally had to open up about it.
If not for the circus that was McClaren 2007 he might have won a third.ωσяℓ∂ тяανєℓєя ȼяєω
