Push-Up Bars - Are they useful?

    Hey All,

I was wondering if push-up bars are more useful than just sticking my hands on the floor?

    Thanks,
    Joe

Push up Bars? you mean those handle type deals?

They are useful in that they help you get a deeper stretch by increasing the distance you can drop down on your pushups.

Honestly if you are thinking about getting some of these you could save money and just use a pair of dumbells. You could use 10lb.ers for a little stretch and 80lb.ers for a ginormous stretch.

Another way they can be useful is the aspect of keeping your hands in a fist and your wrists straight while pushing, instead of hands flat on the floor with wrists bent, or fists against a floor that may hurt.

You don't need pushup handles. Just use a couple of large dumbells, 60's work great for me.

three chairs strategically placed, will give you all the range of motion you could ever want from the pushup.

I've got pushup handles simply because I don't have any dumbbells except for a cheap plastic set from 2.5 to 10lbs...the 10lbs I have doesn't work well for me because it's not like a steel dumbbell at all...

But like they all said...just use 10lbs db's for a not so deep pushup and like maybe 90lb dumbbells for a deeper pushup...my pushup blocks aren't that high but I think they are higher than 60lbs...Try 80-90 lbs, that should work

    Cheers, JM

I find them useful. I just don't like putting my hands in that position where the palm is at 90deg against the wrist. It hurts. I'd rather grab a handle, which is a more natural position for my hands. Plus I like the extra height for the stretch. I do pushups with my hands oriented either vertically or horizontally and almost always with my feet up on a bench. I can't use db because I have round plates and they would roll around.

I recommend getting the Reebok handles from Target (or target.com). They have a nice rubbery grip which feels very comfortable, and the height is adjustable and they have rubber feet to prevent slippage:

Yeah like a few people have said, use a pair of dumbbells. Works well and you can get other uses out of it.

I use my 50 lb. hex DB's. The larger DB's I have are round and roll on the floor, so they don't work so well.

I have a pull up rack with push up stands at the bottom. I conclude that the can be an addition to one's workout routine, especially if push ups play a big role in it, because of the higher range of motion, the wrist aspect (injury risk) and the fact that push ups become more challenging (explained quite well here http://pullupspushups.com/push-up-bars/ you cannot go as fast as usual and the bars force you to keep good form. I also did them for a while using dumbells, but I don't like the risk that of rolling (rather big injury risk).*
