    inconsistent bench???

Towards the end of June, i benched 245lb x 2 reps. The week before that, i was doing about 215lb x 4. Now my bench has dropped again. Why am i so inconsistent? Could i have just been having a really good day when i maxed out? does anyone else have this problem?

Just depends on the day man. I've gone through it too, you don't want to max out often. Do it once a month or less.

prolly depends on ur energy level/amount of carbs u had b4 ur workout.........
and depends on when u do ur bench press......try doing it first thing so u can get the most out of it

i usually do it as my first workout. it's just really discouraging when one day i can bench a pretty good weight and following week, i drop like 30 lbs.

that's a pretty big drop in only a week. It most likely has to do with your diet and sleeping habits. Or your mental focus.

But my bench does vary a lot too (not as much as yours though), and it's definitely discouraging. Just stick with it man.

Make sure you are putting enough of work on your lats and front delts,I read a statement from some huge bodybuilder about why peoples bench isnt going up and he said to make sure to work lats and F.delts just as much as your tri's and chest for your bench press to make big increases.I had the same problem as you.

It happens to everyone man. Dont get hung up on numbers. Thats the purpose to warming up, you will find what will work for you for that workout. Some days are better than others. Sometimes having a good spotter or workout partner can make a difference. Your diet the 24 hours prior to that workout also has an impact.

Switch to dumbells. You'll see better gains and you won't become obsessive over a number.

to answer some questions... no im not cutting, that's the last thing i need to do right now! plus, i don't really get enough sleep; im a light sleeper. maybe it's all mental because both times i maxed out in june were when i went to the gym with my friend and he was spotting me. I had a very good workout both days. thanks for all the advice guys!

Consume more carbs beforehand and try to get some sort of energy drink (caffine) to fire up the cns. You could also be overtraining though, how many a week are you benching?

My guess would be improper nutrition and sleeping habits. Also, how many times per week do you work bench?

    day 1-chest/bi's
    day 2-back/tri's
    day 3-shoulders/traps
    day 4-legs/calves
i switch it up every week though; i don't have set days for any muscle group.
