I am a junior in HS and i have played basketball in grades 6-10 (not 9th grade cause i got cut) and this year im starting to think about wrestling instead. I never wrestled before but ive been workin out n runnin gettin ready for bball (or mayb wrestling) during this preseason... i also spent a lot of time playing ball in the offseason and working on my skill (i have improved tremendously) but something in me wants to wrestle
my main reasons for wrestling
- bball is fun but i always seem to have to 'force' myself to go to open gym and it has been somewhat fun but i dunno i just dont seem to enjoy playin basketball that much (although i find myself better and havin more fun now then i did in previos seasons)
- i wouldnt have to deal wtih my basketball teammates and worry about messin up drills/ f*ckin up at practice (one reason why im so unsure of this is b.c i got a lot better at bball and i feel that just from past seasons when i kinda sucked i remember this but im not sure)
- last year after bball i lost a lot of muscle. mainly because i rarley worked out (did not have time with hw n games, etc.) and becuase my deit was pretty weak
- wrestling i heard gets you in sick shape, and the team often lifts (certainly much more than basketball) as well as run a lot
- wrestling might require cuttin weight which im prepared to do n enjoy havin it as an obligation to cut
reasons i want to stick with bball
- i worked hard, especially on skills this offseason and with try outs about a week away i would hate to waste all this hardwork and join wrestling which i have no skill in (other than my athletic ability)
- i got a lot better, bball is fun
- i like my bball coach but i think its just basketball that i dont like so much
besides all this i think the main reason im uncertain is cause im not too sure why i do and why i dont want to play basketball this year... im not sure if i like it enough to be comitted to it... wrestlin on the otherhand looks like fun (im still learin about it) and i get to lift n workout (love doin that, used to have to do it mostly on my own but now wrestling does it)
this post is mainly to help me and ill prob come back and edit it as i think about it but i need to make a decision at least by this monday (hopefully by friday) this way i can talk to both my coaches
but any wrestlers or bballers or anyone wanna chime in n offer there opionion on my situation, i wil be very grateful
thanks
PS - if u got ne websites that r informative about HS wrestling plz let me know
thanks

The reason i would tell you to play bball as well is because i like it so much. Yea it is a lot of work but it is a lot of fun too. Pm me if you wanna talk about bball at all, i played varisty since my soph year.

Alright man i guess it really does sound like wrestling is your best bet. Whichever you enjoy more i think you will ultimately be better at. Good luck with it.

Wrestle
wrestle... basketball is for sissys. just go and go hard and you will not regret it.
wrestling its just you and someone else. you either get all the shame or all the glory. nobody else to blame or trust just you and your ability against another guy and his. its the best decision you will make.
but rememeber give it EVERYTHING YOU HAVE!

I wrestled for 2 years for a d-2 team here in Michigan. I would go to the open mats, see if you like it, if you do then give wrestling a shot. Fair warning though, wrestling is probably one of the toughest sports you can participate in in high school. But i believe it also has the greatest rewards. So go to the open mats, wrestle with some guys your weight, see if you like it, and go from there.

hey all, sorry its been a long time but i decided i'd post a follow up..
anyway i did wrestle this year and i had an awesome time doing it..
I really enjoyed the sport, practices were awesome, got a lot of good hard work outs in. I didn't have too much trouble learning the moves, my coach was very impressed and kept telling me he was shocked at how fast i was picking the sport up. i owe a lot to my coach and drilling partners, they were really good teachers and really enabled me to pick it up quick..
after about the 3 and a half week long pre -season we had our first tournament, now i was completely new to the sport n was pretty nervous b4 my first match but belive it or not i won my first mathc ever... the score as like 14-6 (i was wining) and then i pinned him in the 2nd period, it felt really good
however i did get my ass kicked the other two mathches i had that day but o well... later i found out that the first kid i wrestled, was his first year too
anyway i was in a bunch of tournaments and picked up a few varisty wins, i wrestled jv during the leauge season and my overall recored was 5-19 i think, and there were a handful of really close matches
anyway my team was league champs this year but next year i most likley will be varsity because all of our heavy weights graduated this year, i wrestle 160 this year and next year im prob gonna be up to 189 (as of this day i weigh 175)
anyway thanks for all of your help, and let me say bballers -wrestlers deserve a lot of respect, this **** isnt easy

wrestle!!
Rhe wrestling season doesnt start until next winter. If youre going to get into wrestling u should start hitting up some of the local freestyle tournaments in your state this summer, before next season. That will help a ton, also look up on the internet or ask friends of open gyms, usually coaches that will help out at those too, and many go through the offseason.

Glad to see that you enjoy the sport. I love it too. I'll be wrestling 189 next year too. I wrestled 152, 160, and 171 this year. It was my first year for high school, I did modified programs but for stupid reason I didn't wrestle my freshman and sophomore years. I think I'm going to J Robinsons Intensive Camp this summer and I'm definitely going to some tournaments, it's a good idea for you too.

dude wrestling is the hardest sport. you have to be in the greatest shape all of the time. i say go for wrestling, as it will give you more excitement, and teach you more things than basketball would. you also asked for links to wrestling sites. heres one: www.themat.com go to coaches corner for a bunch of moves. good luck! :P

You could not wrestle in baggy jeans and a hoodie... Just like any other sport it requires a uniform. Because you have to grapple with your opponent and grasp them it requires you to show more skin and wear tighter clothing. Doesnt make it "gay" just the requirements. The object is to beat the **** out of the other guy not grab his nuts.. Enough already.
