Is the hook grip a necessity on cleans? I am trying to get used to it on snatches, but do I need to use it on cleans?

Absolutely for snatches. Once it gets heavy you will need all the help you can get.
I do it for cleans only once I get close to a competition, though for me it is not really a big deal. The clean is my strongest lift."However, the strength of the hamstring muscles is crucial to fully exploit the strength potential of the quads and ultimately the vertical force that the athlete is able to impart to the barbell." - Andrew Charniga, Jr.

hook grip builds good thumb strength too, which too many ppl seem to lack

hahah, this is funny but a few months ago I was talking massive **** to everybody telling them to burn their straps and whatnot, now I actually use them and feel they're a good training tool, I know a lot of o-lifters use straps to do reps on snatches as well as snatch and clean high pulls, I myself only use them on weighted dead hangs, high pulls for reps from the hang, and double overhand power shrugs, and typically only for the heaviest sets, I feel they are a crutch otherwise though.

Most lifters will naturally release the hook as they turn the bar over to catch it. It usually happens automatically for me, but every once in a while I find out I'm still hooked after standing up with a clean. I usually pop the bar up at the top of the clean recovery to re-set/widen my grip for the jerk because my jerk grip is actually pretty close to the width I use for snatches
