Often when you see someone working out in nice clothes, it's because they left their gym bag and home and still wanted to lift. Of course they could just be morons. either way just concentrate on your own workout. If the people around you stink, just fart a lot. that's what I do, cause my farts smell like roses.

There was a guy in my gym wearing cologne the other day... it wasnt the "i'm wearing the cologne i put on this morning" sort of smell, it was the "i just dumped on half a bottle of hilfiger because i want to pick up the hunnies" sort of thing... pathetic...

I've never seen anyone dressed up at the gym, but I'll be looking for it from here on out.
You should have said something really smart like "Just come froma funeral?" or "Going out to eat after this?" or something like that.
