I'm still having a hard time understanding the 40% Protein and Carbs, 20% Fat idea

Where is this from--I do not doubt this at all, but I still don't know where you guys are getting this info from.

And should I worry about calories as much as obtaining those percentages of nutrients?

I'm 5'9" 190 lbs, probably 20% BF, and trying to lose fat.

well start with your protein needs. most bodybuilders need at leat 1gram of protein/lb of bodyweight at all times. cutting or bulking increases this need. so you start with your protein needs. at 220 and bulking i take in about 300-350g/day. to keep cals from protein equal to cals from carbs, i eat the same amount of carbs as protein. then i'll have like 50-60g of fat as well.

this comes out to about 40/40/20 split. usually just under 40 and just over 20.

over all calories are just as important as the right ratio of calories. you can have the exact percentages you want, but if you're over eating or under eating for your goal you'll never get there.

    Wink

Basically, it goes like this. Shoot for a daily number of calories you're trying to get. As an easy figure, we'll choose 2,000 calories

40/40/20 means that 40% of your total CALORIES will come from protein, 40% will come from carbs and 20% will come from fats.

    40% of 2,000 = 800 calories
Each gram of protein is equivalent to 4 calories. Therefore, you'll be consuming 200g protein per day

    40% of 2,000 = 800 calories
Each gram of carbohydrates is equivalent to 4 calories. Therefore, you'll be consuming 200g carbs per day

    20% of 2,000 = 400 calories
Each gram of fat is equivalent to 9 calories. Therefore, you'll be consuming 44.444g (round up or down) of fats per day

That is a basic breadown of a 40/40/20 macronutrient breakdown, based on a 2,000 calorie diet
