Thanks, John, for all you have done to promote the natural side of the art/sport. By the way, have you heard anything new about the Cronus debacle?

Thanks for the comment. As for the Cronus, the last I heard, the winner of the show was not paid the money because he supposedly failed the drug test. I haven't heard anything recently about it. I'll have to ask my former co-host on our radio show if he heard anything lately.

My friend said the case in the courts now. Cleveland Thomas never got the money but he has a lawyer and he's suing. The Cronus company doesn't have a lawyer yet. I'll keep you posted.

Not my place to not believe this.

I have gotten where im at naturally, and at this rate I isn't far fetched to think he could be where he is at his age naturally too.

For amateur bodybuilders HERE IS A BIG TIP!!! To really give yourself a bodybuilder frame you need to incorperate forearms, traps, calvs, and lower back into your workouts. These are the least trained muscles by the population of weight lifters, so this will give you an edge and set you apart from others. Forearms are the best bet for setting yourself apart from others. If you are a serious builder, you know to work every single possible muscle in the body

That's a good question. I was always fascinated with muscular physiques, even when I was a little kid. I started reading the superhero comic books as a kid because I was fascinated by the superheroes and how muscular they were. Back when I was a kid, bodybuilding was a very misunderstood sport and the fitness boom did not happen yet so not many people worked out and there weren't that many gyms or health clubs around. I didn't know anything about bodybuilding. I was at an auto show one year and I saw a picture of Bruce Lee from the movie "Enter the Dragon". This was around the time Bruce died and there was a big poster of him next to the Black Beauty car, the car from the Green Hornet TV series. Bruce Lee was the first real person I saw who had superhero muscles. I read everything I could about him and I started to follow his fitness program, including taking karate classes, doing push-ups and sit-ups, running and also lifting weights. My parents got me a weight set for Christmas that year and I had to look around for magazines to learn what exercises to do. When I discovered what bodybuilding was, I immediately knew that was what I wanted to do. My teachers at school and some of my relatives told me to stay away from it. They said it would make me musclebound, that all that muscle turns to fat when I get older and that everyone in bodybuilding was gay. I wanted to be a bodybuilder but I was worried because of what everyone was saying. That summer, my family took a long 4 week vacation (driving by car) out west. When we were in California, I told my Dad I wanted to go see Gold's Gym in Venice but he told me we were on a schedule and we didn't have time. We were going to Universal Studios that day instead. To my surprise, they were filming The World's Strongest Man contest at Universal that day. Franco Columbu and Lou Ferrigno were both competing in the event and Arnold was there to watch them. So, by total coincidence, I got to meet Arnold, Franco and Lou all in one day. I took that as a sign or fate that I was destined to be a bodybuilder! I couldn't wait to get back home and start training really hard to be a bodybuilder and one day win the Mr. Universe title.

My lifts in the big 3 (bp 210, dl 330, squats 280) sucks!
Which advice in Training would you give me?
My goal is to gain as much muscle as possible, natural..

Yes, with two years of training experience behind you, I would stay with the basic exercises, keep the sets moderate and go as heavy as you can for 6-8 reps. You need to get stronger on the basic exercises and this will build more mass and the foundation of your physique. You don't need a lot of volume at this stage, just keep it basic and keep trying to get stronger which will make you bigger. Your diet is also very important because you need to eat enough calories and carbs to add size.

Hey, John. I hope you can give me some piece of advice here. I am a natural bodybuilder for 6 years and I would say I haven't really reached my potential yet. I'm planning to compete this septemeber on an open competition (with previous champs on it). WOuld that be a good move? I mean, if I have to challenge myself then this should be it. My questions are, as a natural, would increasing your carbohydrates intake help on gaining some muscles? I've read once in a magazine frank sepe(sp) said that for natural bodybuilders the carbohydrate intake should really be high compared to those who are drug assisted. And Also, How do you take your supplements? I'm pretty strong myself, arm is 16 inches cold on a body weight of 165 pounds, small boned, and 5'9". I hope you can share some of your secrets. I wanna be a known natty if not internationally maybe locally. Thanks a lot! God speed!

Yes, I think you should compete in the open class this year if you feel you are in top shape. The best thing about competing in bodybuilding competitions is that you can really analyze your physique based on the pictures and video and see what your strong and weak points are. I always made great progress in my physique when I competed because I was able to see what areas I needed to improve. If you haven't competed before, I would suggest starting with a novice division first before jumping up to the open division.

As for the carbs, if you have a fast metabolism and are trying to add more muscle size than you definitely need more carbs. In fact, I've always believed in bulking up when I was younger. If you are natural, the only way you can get bigger is to eat an excess of calories while training heavier. I always ate a high carb intake when I was bulking up in between shows and trying to get bigger. When I was training to win my second Natural Mr. Universe contest, I bulked up to 243 pounds in the off season and I was eating 4500-5000 calories a day with up to 700 grams of carbs a day. I competed at 208 pounds that year and I really added a lot of size in the off season because of my diet and I was training really heavy and really hard all year long.

This is a great thread full of info. Glad I found it! As someone new and interested in competing natural. How long do you think it would take to be able to walk on stage. I am 30 now so I am not sure if I am too old and behind the curve to achieve good results. Any thoughts?

30 is very young for bodybuilding! If you haven't seen a contest yet, I would recommend checking one out in your area and you'll get an idea of what you would need to look like to compete. The main thing with competition is to be ripped. If you've never dieted before, you'll have to get leaner than you've ever been in your life. I do online training if you are interested in me helping you prepare for your show. Just PM here and I can get you started. Competing is a GREAT way to motivate yourself and reach new heights that you never thought you could reach on your own.
