I was scrolling through some pictures, and quickly realized that Dennis James' back is amazing. Why have I never noticed it before? Why isn't it more talked about when best back in the IFBB discussion comes up?

I dunno, if you really look at the close-ups of his back, it almost looks like his insertions aren't low at all, but that he does no training whatsoever for the lower lats. Either way, if he could keep his midsection in check, I'd have no problem with him winning some high-level shows, even an Olympia. For that matter, he's got a better midsection than Cutler, who my wife even said "eww, he looks pregnant."
Don't call me bro. I'm not your brother.
Rack your weights. Don't be a douchebag.
People who wear grip straps and gloves make me laugh.

Yeah that must be it.

Seriously DJ's lats are just too high. They look great like that in the gym and make an incredible illusion of width, but when compared to the likes of Coleman or Cutler you'll see DJ's lats aren't really THAT wide in comparison, and the fact that Coleman and Cutler actually HAVE lower lats just makes his back look marginal standing in line with the other big boys.
His high lats and his everlasting conditioning issues are what keep him from placing top 3 IMHO.

I'm not saying deadlifts aren't a great exercise, I just found hilarious your statement - you, an amateur like any other of us - assuming that you somehow had the answer to improve the back of an IFBB pro, top 10 in the world, who's been in this for over a decade, which is even funnier considering that:
1) He does deadlift, I've seen videos of him SLDLing in excess of 500lbs for reps;
2) You somehow suggest deadlifting will fix his high lats, as in they will magically create muscle origins where there are none, a process that only occours in the first few weeks of fetal development.

Lats too high, never dry/conditioned enough on stage, distended stomach (I know, I know... Ronnie had one but also had crazy arms, crazy legs, and of course a crazy back).
And althought many people in this thread seem to prefer high lats, I prefer lats with low insertions... It can make for a huge, massive appearance.
