    Shoes for squatting - confused

    Hi all

I've heard that Converse Chuck Taylor's are good shoes for squatting. As the moment i'm using spongey skate shoes which offer little support.

I'm confused as to which actual Chuck Taylor's to buy. On this page, there is a lot of Chuck Taylor shoes listed, and i'm totally lost . I know i should be looking for the 'hi tops', but i also hear that you should get the 'hi top canvas' shoes. It seems that there is no hi top canvas shoes on that page? Or are all hi tops canvas?

Please check the link out for me

    Thanks

screw that, squating shoes should be hardsoled. go get some work boots, like construction men wear. i have a nice pair of nike boots that work nice,
or find some olympic weight lifting shop and look for squating shoes, they have a little block of wood on the heel incase you raise on your toes a little this keeps more contact with the shoe so you can press with the heel and not the toes

don't buy OL shoes because of that reason. Flat soled shoes will activate more of your hams and glutes. Don't worry about ankle support. If you have the right technique you will be fine. If you have the wrong technique, ain't no shoe in the world that'll save your ass. You can call around, local shoe stores will carry chucks.

i'm pretty sure it's the "all star hi"
basically you need a shoe that is flat. the worst are running shoes, which will make it seem as if you are squatting on blocks.

    hey bracken,

get these http://www1.converse.net.au/view_ima...r&idname=prod. they are the best for squatting and also for deadlifting. even louie simmons recommends those. don't spend extra money on those squatting shoes. footlocker has them for 40.00.

So? Most Plers would dl BAREFOOT if allowed. The key is getting something with a thin, hard sole thus CT's and wrestling shoes are popular choices.

The question was about a squat, not about deadlift.

all star hi is what you want.

lateral ankle support isn't necessary in power lifting. it's not gonna help if you have bad or good form.

Why so defensive? I bet Chuck Vogephol had probably a roll of tape on each ankle under the shoe. Through the 60s and 70s nearly ALL basketball players wore Chuck Taylors. Trainers would spend hours before games taping ankle after ankle. I never claimed to know everything about lifting. All I said was that they don't provide very good ankle support. That I KNOW I am right about, but I may be wrong about it not being a good squat shoe. We are all here to learn, SO LAY THE **** OFF YOU PIECE OF ****. BTW, if you are making fun of the fact that I have a curl max in my signature... then what are your stats?

Chuck Taylors are popular because they have a flat sole and the canvas is pretty sturdy. A lot of people prefer wrestling shoes for their flat soles. I personally prefer Chucks, probably because I've used them since '91 and feel comfortable with them. I wear the all black hi-tops. http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/605466/c/3123.html

I've been looking for info like this for awhile. I have very high arches and if I don't wear the right sneakers my feet hurt quite a bit, I end up getting Nike crosstrainers most of the time and I've been wearing them to workout in (I just bought a new pair). Question is, am I ruining the supports in crosstrainers wearing em to squat and deadlift in? I think I am. I guess I could wear my combat boots...thanks in advance for advice.

I squat and deadlift barefoot. I think it provides better balance and contact with the floor. I just started doing it a few months ago, but the very first time I did it, I added 10lbs to each lift. They both felt a lot more comfortable too. I've never heard of this causing any ankle problems for people on heavier lifts, but I don't know for sure.

Same here... it's wierd. I like to deadlift barefoot, but squatting barefoot feels ass nasty to me. I DL and squat with wrestling shoes because they're flat and it's nothing really much under your foot if you like to DL without shoes.

That looks like a Reebok wrestling shoe. I've ordered several pairs of knee wraps and a belt from that site, they shipped quickly and with no problems. But I would be hesitant to order shoes online. I like my lifting shoes to be snug so i go to a regular store to buy them.

I prefer the chuck taylors. I have the black high tops. The thin sole is good for pulling, and they're very stable against the sides of your feet so you can spread the floor on squats without having your feet roll.

I lift in wrestling shoes? Does anyone else? what do you think of using wrestling shoes. They have no sole, (very flat) so it makes it perfect.
