Hi all
I've heard that Converse Chuck Taylor's are good shoes for squatting. As the moment i'm using spongey skate shoes which offer little support.
I'm confused as to which actual Chuck Taylor's to buy. On this page, there is a lot of Chuck Taylor shoes listed, and i'm totally lost . I know i should be looking for the 'hi tops', but i also hear that you should get the 'hi top canvas' shoes. It seems that there is no hi top canvas shoes on that page? Or are all hi tops canvas?
Please check the link out for me

screw that, squating shoes should be hardsoled. go get some work boots, like construction men wear. i have a nice pair of nike boots that work nice,
or find some olympic weight lifting shop and look for squating shoes, they have a little block of wood on the heel incase you raise on your toes a little this keeps more contact with the shoe so you can press with the heel and not the toes

don't buy OL shoes because of that reason. Flat soled shoes will activate more of your hams and glutes. Don't worry about ankle support. If you have the right technique you will be fine. If you have the wrong technique, ain't no shoe in the world that'll save your ass. You can call around, local shoe stores will carry chucks.

i'm pretty sure it's the "all star hi"
basically you need a shoe that is flat. the worst are running shoes, which will make it seem as if you are squatting on blocks.Henry Rollins

hey bracken,
get these http://www1.converse.net.au/view_ima...r&idname=prod. they are the best for squatting and also for deadlifting. even louie simmons recommends those. don't spend extra money on those squatting shoes. footlocker has them for 40.00.

Chuck Taylors are popular because they have a flat sole and the canvas is pretty sturdy. A lot of people prefer wrestling shoes for their flat soles. I personally prefer Chucks, probably because I've used them since '91 and feel comfortable with them. I wear the all black hi-tops. http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/605466/c/3123.html

I've been looking for info like this for awhile. I have very high arches and if I don't wear the right sneakers my feet hurt quite a bit, I end up getting Nike crosstrainers most of the time and I've been wearing them to workout in (I just bought a new pair). Question is, am I ruining the supports in crosstrainers wearing em to squat and deadlift in? I think I am. I guess I could wear my combat boots...thanks in advance for advice.

I squat and deadlift barefoot. I think it provides better balance and contact with the floor. I just started doing it a few months ago, but the very first time I did it, I added 10lbs to each lift. They both felt a lot more comfortable too. I've never heard of this causing any ankle problems for people on heavier lifts, but I don't know for sure.
