In the US the manufacturer is listed on the label and the FDA website provides information

A wholesaler. The wholesaler got it from a manufacturer. The manufacturer got it from various locations around the world based on batch numbers. The average chemist does not have access to all of that information on hand.
I've been seeing the past in one eye and the present in the other. So, I thought I could only see patches of reality, never the whole picture. I felt like I was watching a dream I could never wake up from. Before I knew it, the dream was over.
