If and when he loses, he will call his followers to violence, and that will be game over. And I fully expect him to do so. If he wins, he will basically be above the law, and it will completely diminish the court. We will live in a "managed" democracy, Putin style. There was a specific period shortly after his presidency and Jan 6, where there was a good opening to handle the situation, but our government failed to protect democracy. Now, we are in for some hard times.

John Marshall saw this coming 220 years ago when he faced an openly defiant president vs the courts. He made a slick decision to avoid that conflict. We were fortunate to never have this kind of brazen hostility to the courts again. There were some periods where it briefly happened, like with Jackson, but ultimately, he followed the court. When you have a President or former President vs the courts, it's basically the end of America because a substantial chunk of the country are now advocating for lawlessness and challenging the government to suppress its own people, thereby ending the experiment.

That's the exact opposite of what this case is about. What is alleged is that he falsified business records by reimbursing his lawyer but called it a fee. Even if that was illegal (it's not because he didn't attempt to defraud anyone) the statute of limitations has expired on that. They're trying to keep that charge alive by tying it to an alleged campaign finance violation where the statute has not expired. That is also bogus because the FERC has already investigated and found no violation and there is the John Edwards precedent.
