over the years I've lost all my friends, some of them just drift away and we lose touch with each other, some of them tell me off and don't want to be my friend anymore, I'm 40 years old now and don't have any real friends, anybody else have this happen? where all your friends abandon you?

Life happens man. I have lost all my childhood friends, most of them were pieces of chit, others moved away. I got a ton of “work friends” and like 2 I can call for anything. Such is life I guess.

The most recent friend who did this did it out of nowhere, we were video chatting on ******** when suddenly out of seeming nowhere he explodes and tells me off and hangs up on me, he then messages me several times saying how he had always been there for me when I needed someone and whatever, he made it sound like I was the one cutting him off, I spoke to him a few more times after that and eventually discovered I couldn't contact him anymore, he left me a voicemail on my phone saying he blocked me on ******** and his phone, etc, it seems like a schizophrenic episode to me because it came out of nowhere.

another friend cut me off a couple years ago, I went to message him on ******** and discovered he wasn't on my ******** anymore.

For the record, a real friend is someone who would bail your ass out of jail. A real friend is someone who if you were out of the country and got robbed, they would get you back to the US. A real friend is someone who isn't afraid to call you on your bull****. A real friend is someone who would stick by your side in a physical altercation even if you were outnumbered. A real friend does all this because he knows if roles were reversed, you would be there in his corner. It goes back to the fundamental principal that to have a friend, you have to be a friend.

The only friendships I've lost are the ones I stopped putting effort into maintaining, or the ones who stopped putting any effort in with me. Very rarely is it due to something else, and if it is it's usually a relationship/kids, which is understandable, albeit unfortunate.

I used to run a lot. I've run the Gasparilla Distance Classic which is 9.3 miles. I also ran track back in the day. Don't run any more because it's tough on the knees and I value my knees. Humans were made to run on the balls of their feet which are like shock absorbers. Running in running shoes is taxing. I do bike more than 50 miles at a time. How about you?

Well technically the friends I have left moved to the other side of the country so they're still friends but I only see them like twice a year so not the same thing. My day to day life I have no friends.

37 years old. I tried to join an adult sports league the last month and the guys on my team are so weird and awkward. Not trying to be a dick cause I know I just admitted to having no friends but it's very depressing that's the group of people that are left for me to socially interact with. Either that or be alone. Haven't been this depressed in years.

This is only half the story though. I spent years making effort to keep friends that had moved on to different phases of their life and rarely put in the effort back to me. THey got into relationships and had kids and/or moved away. I would still make the effort to hang out with them, even if it meant events where their gf/wife was also included. I would make the effort to visit if they moved away but they never came to visit me.

After awhile though you give up when it's always one sided and you just let them go. So this idea that it's on us is bullsh*t if that's the story you're trying to sell. I could have endlessly put in the one sided effort I was doing I suppose but that was equally unfulfilling and depressing.

For what it's worth, I don't have a single friend from my early/mid 20s that isn't married or in a serious relationship at this point. And the reality is I'm not in one. Just get in a relationship you could say and sure I would love to but you know how hard it is to get in a relationship when all of your friends are already in them, never hang out, and don't know anyone to even set you up with.

I'm basically left with no social life with the option to start going out alone and cold approaching alone as the weird guy with no friends. I'm not autistic or visually deformed or anything but if I couldn't get a girlfriend back when I had friends and a social life when I was younger what chance do I really stand in this circumstance.
